This is from a promotional material of George Romero's Day of the Dead (1985) which included a backstory of how the government fell.
THE SOUTHERN GLOBE
THE DEAD WALK! Friday, July 9, 1984 Whereabouts of President UnknownPresident Reagan has not been seen in public since the beginning of the current crisis. Theories range from him having been traveled to the Cheyenne Mountain complex to being escorted to a US carrier at dock in San Diego, which then promptly set to sea with a larger than normal fleet of six battleships, two destroyers, three carriers, numerous tenders, and rumors of a half dozen submarines.
Another theory has the President being traveled by spy plane to a remote Antarctic outpost where a base of operations is being established for what remains of the Executive Branch.
Other branches of the government have equally been affected by this crisis. An attempt was made to evacuate the Supreme Court which led to tragedy. During the movement, the caravan of vehicles was swarmed by the dead. The last reported sighting of the new Justice, Sandra Day O'Connor, was of her being torn to shreds.
Little has been heard from the Senate after hoards of the risen broke through the police barricades, the recently fallen joining after, in the attack of the Senate.
Shortly after, the House of Representatives was also breached, though rumors are that a large number of the members did escape and were heading to a secret facility in Virginia where they would continue business during this time of crisis.
Fears escalated that the House may be trying to impeach the President and replace him with the Vice President. If this were to come to pass, political analysts posited that Bush would be very likely to use low-yield nuclear weapons on American soil.
This reporter can only hope that whatever methods are used, the President makes his position public very soon.
Discontent continues to grow as people are forced at gunpoint into Rescue Stations that bear little difference from WW2 concentration camps which only results in making the living a feast for the walking dead when they fall.
God bless us all.

Well since the USN had, or were reactivating the 4 Iowa class BBs I don't know where they got 6 from but in the total chaos I wouldn't be surprised if there were a hell of a lot of rumour and misinformation floating about.

The article was mistaken. Perhaps the USN revived the USS Texas (BB-35) which obsolete as hell but could still shell zombies in the land from the sea. Or maybe it's the reporter's error because of so much zombies and looting occurring. I have feeling this fleet sailed to Hawaii if ever. I'll be making an ORBAT of this soon. I'd like to think Reagan was evacuated to the USS Enterprise escorted by the USS Nimitz, USS Midway, and the USS Saratoga. Since the Enterprise and Nimitz were the most advanced at that time, I'd like to think the Pacific Command would disperse them at sea to prevent them from falling to the zombies.

Could be a Universe where all of the Iowa-class battleships where build, if zombies can exist, then why not 6 Iowa-class battleships.

However, if we take a 1984 POD, only the USS New Jersey, USS Iowa, USS Missouri, and the USS Wisconsin would be available. I'm not sure how long it will take to revive the USS Texas since that was a museum ship after World War II. Perhaps it was a misinformation as when society breaks down, so will communications. That's a common trope in zombie apocalypse stories.

More to come tomorrow. Also, a zombie apocalypse in 1984 would be interesting. I wonder how the Soviets and the Warsaw Pact would have reacted.

More to come tomorrow. Also, a zombie apocalypse in 1984 would be interesting. I wonder how the Soviets and the Warsaw Pact would have reacted. Shoot first, ask questions later. I guess the Soviets and their Warsaw Pact allies would have censored what's going on in the US. They would cover it up as riots caused by a failing capitalist system. Then if the zombies start showing up, any mention of it would have one being captured by the KGB and imprisoned for spreading "false rumors". Then probably the Soviet Army along with the MVD, OMON, and the Militsiya would be deployed to the streets of Soviet cities and other cities in the Iron Curtain to reinforce their allies under the guise of a military exercise or "putting down rebellion." Of course, how long they could cover this up is debatable. I'd see the People's Republic of China do the same thing. NATO would have mobilized while U.S. bases in Europe and Asia would be on high alert or ready to assist allies quell outbreaks. Africa would spiral into a mess as aid from both sides of the Cold War would end support immediately. The mess created from the Angolan Civil War and other conflicts would probably create more zombies as in the Romero universe, anyone who dies becomes a zombie unless the brain is destroyed

Greenbrier was the designated evacuation site for the U.S. Congress in an event of a nuclear war. The Bunker At The GreenbrierAlso, it was stated some members of Congress were evacuated to Mount Weather during 9/11.

On the subject of battleships, an ill-informed journalist, or one who just wants to write something more dramatic, will write 'battleship' for any warship like they will write 'tank' for any tracked vehicle.
BTW, on subject, good find for the article!

BTW, on subject, good find for the article! It's the same thing that happened here in Cebu during the COVID-19 lockdown last April. Two armored vehicles, a V-150 and GKN Simba, were seen guarding one district that had been assumed to hold ~10,000 infected individuals. Locals news outlets called it a "tank" but netizens corrected them to name it an "armored personnel carrier." As of 2021, the Philippine Army does not operate tanks. The only tracked vehicles it operates is the M113 and the Scorpion IFV. 〈insert pop-up content here〉James G sure thing! I'm always interested with the alternate history component of Romero's zombie movies considering the first three films takes place in the 1960s (Night), 1970s (Dawn), and 1980s (Day), however Romero himself stated all films are connected. Even then, TV Tropes has gave it the Comic Book Time trope since there are obvious things not existing in 1968 (if one assumes the films to take place in 1968) such as 1970s tech and Stephen King's Salem's Lot which Bub the Zombie read from. Bub (Day of the Dead - 1985)
