I used to think the CIA headquarters were secure just like the FBI HQ or the Pentagon. But not against a massive horde of zombies. It's possible the Washington horde could have made it to McLean? Or they simply waded across the Potomac as we saw on Land of the Dead, zombies could cross underwater because they can't drown. |

CIA At a Loss for ExplanationsThe CIA has been promptly denying any wrong doing on this outbreak of the dead rising to attack the living.
Several reporters have been forwarding their theories regarding the use of some chemicals once tested as defoliants in Vietnam as being responsible for the dead rising. The CIA has declared any theories as "utterly preposterous and without merit."
The CIA continues to back its original theory that some form of radiation from the recently returned Venus Probe may be causing the dead to rise. The last of any skepticism of the dead rising was waylaid when one of the active cadaver was brought in for display to the wary reporters. Its teeth had been removed and while a gag covered its mouth, it continued trying to reach for the living from the table. Across the room, Dr. Walsh of the CDC demonstrated how the creature's arms and legs could be removed with little apparent discomfort to it.
Shock turned to retching when the Doctor removed much of the creature's internal organs, including the intestines, lungs, and heart. The silent creature continued to writhe on the table until the Doctor demonstrated with a quick push of a scalpel that the risen can be stopped by destruction of the brain stem, the motor complex which drives the corpse.
A sharp blow to the head is recommend as the method of destruction, which can effectively be delivered by something at available as a baseball bat or a tire iron. People are encouraged to immediately destroy the brain stem of any family members, neighbors, or strangers that should die from any kind of wound while in their presence. The period before the corpse becomes reanimated can vary from between just a few minutes to an hour, possibly affected by how long the once living had been afflicted by the bite wounds from the walking dead.
The CIA spokesman recommended against any use of fire while attempting to destroy the walking dead, as there have been reports of city-wide fires that have occurred when one of the dead became immolated, but continued to walk for some time afterwards. Fire does not have the necessary destructive power to destroy the corpse before it can spread the fire to any nearby flammable materials. It invariably leads to the destruction of any potential safe houses as fire departments and other emergency services are no longer reporting in over a large area of the country.
Until order is restored, people will be on their own and cannot depend on local services and only on themselves.

Since it's a zombie apocalypse, expect reactions or policies to change especially as comms breaks down. Misinformation and ignorance would aid the zombies to overwhelm humans. |

National Guard Overwhelmed
Late last night, what had remained of the National Guard on all major highways and many of the thoroughfares were overwhelmed and killed.
In a furious battle that had lasted for more than an hour, thousands of the dead were seen moving into downtown Fort Lauderdale, a last ditch defense being mounted by the National Guard.
The local news helicopters observed at a safe distance the dead rolling over the National Guard like they were hardly there. Tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition was fired into the throngs of the walking dead. Even with skilled sharpshooters however, the guns continued to fall silent one by one as the brave men and women of the National Guard were overcome.
Their sacrifice will not be forgotten, as it gave valuable time for Florida citizens to make their way to the nearby piers and seek refuge aboard numerous cruiser liners that were able to set sail for nearby Cuba, which has not reported any outbreak as of last night.

Governor Urges Residents to Remain Calm, at Home
The Governor spoke today from a secure location that broadcast on all remaining stations will continue as long as the Emergency Broadcast System will still be on the air.
He advised residents to remain calm and to stay at home if possible. This came as we were receiving reports that the National Guard was forcing people into some of the Rescue Stations which suggests a critical and possible widespread breakdown of the communication between state agencies.
He advised that the current situation is under control and that with time and patience the situation will be resolved will be resolved with minimal loss of life. When questioned regarding the thousands of the dead staggering through the streets and attacking the living, the Governor insisted that the reports were false, that there were only small pockets of outbreaks that were being handled quickly and efficiently by the National Guard.
With the EMS having fewer and fewer updates on the status of the rescue stations, we can only assume that they continue to fall to the dead. We continue to hold hope for our field reporters who were covering the story at four of the six local rescue stations, but we fear for the worst and recommend individuals capable of defending their families follow the Governor's advice that the rescue stations will not hold much longer.

I found this Day of the Dead fanfiction which explores abit of the outbreak. It is alternate history since one of the diary entries state December 1985 and putting that into account, the bunker group they were there for three years and half. So that would put the outbreak beginning somewhere in 1981. The Cold War in 1984 looked like this. Having a zombie apocalypse in this era would be interesting. I wonder if the Soviets and NATO get into an alliance against the walking dead.  |

I'm assuming that the crosses relate to areas where there is widespread either civil unrest or terrorism? With the green in Ulster and Israel being related to not directly politically orientated while red and blue are areas where communist and anti-communist factors are prominent.
Suspect a lot would depend on the circumstances. If it was in a core region of either side - say the US or western Europe for the west or Russia for the communist bloc - then the other side would probably be quietly smug at 1st unless and until the pandemic got really serious. Some of the more extreme elements might seek ways to 'help' make things worse for their opponents.
