I think I caught the tail end of the film and saw the bit were about 8-10 people are manually lugging a 16" shell to a gun which showed me enough as, if using the WWII rounds their only 2,700lbs in weight so that was some impressive weight lifting. Then that manages to destroy the alien ground base and suddenly that seemed to be it. However obviously other things happened world-wide but since the damage at Hong Kong was from a ship crashing was that caused by an accident of some form and what landed at Hawaii was simply a secondary survival pod of some form? Well you can always read this, it comes from the Wikipedia article of the movie. In 2005, the Gliese planetary system is discovered to have a potentially habitable planet with conditions similar to Earth and a communications array is built by NASA in Hawaii a year later designed to send transmissions to the planet to establish contact with any intelligent life. Meanwhile, Alex Hopper is arrested while attempting to impress Sam Shane, the daughter of Admiral Terrance Shane. His brother, Commander Stone Hopper, forces Alex to join the U.S. Navy in order to improve his life.
In 2012, Alex and Sam are in a relationship; Alex serves as a Tactical Actions Officer as a lieutenant aboard USS John Paul Jones while Stone is the commanding officer of USS Sampson, but Alex is in danger of receiving a disciplinary discharge. During the 2012 RIMPAC exercise, five alien spacecraft arrive. Their communications ship collides with a satellite and crashes in Hong Kong while the other four land in the waters off Hawaii. Sampson, John Paul Jones, and Japanese destroyer JDS Myōkō are ordered by Admiral Shane to investigate, and they discover a floating structure. When it is touched by Alex it generates a force field that encloses the Hawaiian Islands, isolating them and the three ships from the rest of the world and the RIMPAC fleet, while jamming all radar and communication equipment in it. Three alien warships surface and in the ensuing engagement (first horns are sounded where the aliens respond with a sonic horn, then a warning shot which the aliens perceive as an attack), the Sampson and Myōkō are both destroyed, resulting in Stone's death, and the command crew of John Paul Jones are killed, with Alex assuming command of the ship as the second-in-command. The fight ends when John Paul Jones disengages the enemy to recover the survivors from Myōkō including its commanding officer, Captain Yugi Nagata. However, the Sampson is lost with all hands. After the fight, the aliens launch drones to attack Hawaii which cause heavy damage.
On Oahu, Sam is accompanying retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and double amputee Mick Canales on a mountain hike. After becoming aware of the aliens' presence, they encounter scientist Cal Zapata who informs them the aliens have taken over the communications array, and Mick determines they are planning to use it to re-establish military communications with their home planet. Aboard John Paul Jones, naval personnel capture a semi-conscious alien. The alien forms a telepathic link with Alex, showing him their history of destroying worlds. Other aliens arrive and retrieve their comrade, but Alex leads a team to prevent them from sabotaging the ship. Examination of the captured alien's helmet reveals the aliens are sensitive to sunlight. Ashore, Sam, Nick and Zapata recover his spectrum analyzer from the aliens and they use it to radio John Paul Jones to inform them the aliens intend military telecommunication with their home planet in four hours.
As night falls Captain Nagata suggests a strategy of using the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration tsunami warning buoys around Hawaii to track the alien warships without radar. This allows John Paul Jones to destroy two of them with her missiles. However, the third ship is making evasive movements that make it impossible to predict its course, but Alex has them lure the remaining warship eastwards at dawn, as Alex and Nagata shoot out its bridge windows, blinding its crew and allowing John Paul Jones to destroy it. However, the mothership deploys drones which destroy the John Paul Jones.
The survivors return to Pearl Harbor and commandeer the previously decommissioned World War II battleship USS Missouri with the aid of the retired veterans preserving her, restoring her to battle readiness and confronting the floating structure, revealed to be a giant mothership. Missouri is able to severely damage the mothership and disable the force field, and Admiral Shane immediately summons a flight of Boeing F/A-18 fighter jets from aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. Meanwhile, Sam, Mick and Cal attempt to stall the aliens at the communications array. Alex chooses to use their last shell to destroy the communications array, rendering the Missouri defenseless from drones launched by the foundering mothership. Just before impact, the drones are intercepted and destroyed by the previously dispatched Boeing F/A-18 fighter jets which then finish off the mothership, saving Missouri and eliminating the alien threat.
A ceremony is held to honor the military personnel, where Alex is promoted to lieutenant commander and presented with a Silver Star and his brother's posthumous Navy Cross. Admiral Shane promises Alex will soon have a ship of his own while he is also offered a chance to become a Navy SEAL. After the ceremony, Alex asks Sam's father Admiral Shane for her hand in marriage. The admiral refuses, but shortly thereafter invites Alex to lunch to discuss the matter, referencing how Alex first attempted to impress Sam.
In a post-credits scene, three teenagers and a handyman in Scotland discover a crashed alien pod. When they open it, an alien hand reaches out, and they run off in terror.
Thanks that gives some background. Do they try and make some links between the 2006 transmissions from Earth and the alien attack? Obviously wouldn't be as not time for that to reach a system more than 6 light years away but then we're talking about Hollywood here.

Maybe the kids call the police, police calls in the Army, and the area is cordoned off by the British Army. Hopefully they would do so now. Should have done it as soon as they discovered the bloody thing rather than them and the mechanic guy playing silly buggers and spending hours trying to get it open.
Also i assume the Royal Air Force tracked the object falling with this station, otherwise why is it for. RAF Fylingdales

Since this modern day in August 2012, they should at least have the know or heard of the events happening in Hawaii (even if it was trapped in a force field) and Hong Kong. At this point, news would travel faster in social media compared to TV. The U.S. would have informed their allies across the Atlantic in case such alien craft would fall from the sky.

Even kids would know that thing looks to E.T. The first I'd do is report to authorities.

Not to mention with the destruction in Hong Kong, even if not yet recognised as a alien space ship the world would be on full alert and wondering what the hell was going on. In reality there would probably be police and then the military there before the school lads got to it as from the clip they didn't see it land.

Think in the movie the president was seen in a news coverage clip about the events in Hawaii, also other news clips shown the crash of the four ships near Hawaii and the aftermath of the Hong Kong crash wich you can see in this blury image i found indicating a very devastated city. Also the news coverage shown outbreak of riots across the globe with many governments declaring martial law.

BMEWS and PAVE PAWS coverage across the Arctic and the North Atlantic. Those alien craft would have been no doubt tracked.

It is mentioned that smaller debries landed in Iowa, Germany as well, but the biggest part of that comunacation ship crashed landed in China. I would assume the Chinese want that Regent survivor who crash landed in Scotland and if he is captured alive to stand trial in China for what happen in Hong Kong.

I can see them trying to claim him and possibly even using that as an excuse but I can't see, presuming he's in condition to survive that the west would let them have him. Likely to be thought too valuable to risk him going into another great power's hands. The most is some international agreement to allow access to him, or to what information is supplied by him.

True, i think he is going to be held in the United Kingdom for study and interagation. Also i assume we are going to investigate a lot of money to monitor the Regents home world designated the Goldilocks Planet in the movie.

I suspect he/she/it will end up a guest of uncle Sam as they will have the most pull on London, assuming as I say he's actually surviving. [Which I suspect he would as if their planning any sequel it would be likely to include him. In fact that might be the purpose of the event in Scotland anyway.
Of course the other extreme has him end up doing a one alien version of War of the Worlds and causing a lot of havoc before being taken down.
There will definitely be interest in keeping an eye on their home world and especially any other visitors on the way.

Yes but knowing your nearest neighbours are rabidly hostile isn't reassuring.

Well they send the signal in 2006 and the Regents arrived in 2012, thus if we say a signal takes 3 years to get to the Regents home world and then maybe 1 year for them to study it and prepare a scout fleet and 2 years travel to Earth then it will take until 2015 before the Regents to wonder why the scout fleet did not send a signal back and then some time to decide what they want to do, it could be 2020 when we see a larger Regent fleet arrive, give ore take a year.
