Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Thursday, Dec. 22d, 18981. The cockroach did not wash dishes, because he thought he would miss his free deadhead ride on the "Manila" which was making its supply run. Remember the Katipunan are between the American naval base and the Manila city garrison. 2. COL Van Valzah is in charge of the ammo dump. WHY is the cockroach bothering him or even alive inside the ammo dump? That is the one spot that should be "unauthorized tresspassers will be shot" territory. Something is wrong there. 3. The cockroach is a sucker for seashells sold by the seashore. I wonder who "she sells" is? 4. The cockroach bummed another meal. CPL Harry Langcor, homesick and drunk, went maudlin on the cockroach in his moment of stupor. I suppose a man, the cockroach, who cannot read his fellow man at all, would not recognize the transient signs of drunkeness here. 5. The cockroach bothered other tavern patrons. Apparently nobody punched him in the face or threw him out of the saloon. Very tolerant patrons. 6. That would be the steam ferry Manila 7. L. B. Armstrong gets no credit here. He was a middleman (Englishman huckster) who passed this work forward as his own. You know who that "expletive deleted" agent was? L.B. Armstrong. 8. While the other letters are interesting, the main revealing thing I infer from them about HIM, is that the cockroach knew a lot of saloon keepers and their wives... 9. Headcount 7, NSA 7, 0% success. 10. Still has not done the dishes... 11. OP-SEC inside the American lines is outrageously sloppy. See 2. for the other example of lax security. =============================================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Thursday 12-22-9812. The 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves are in a 2 on 2 off rotation cycle in their sector. =============================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Thursday, December 22nd, 1898 13. The officers opened and read the mail before the soldiers received it. THAT was why LT Robert Wood knew who the whistle-blower on the delayed discharges was? It was Asendorf (^^^). Tampering with the mails was a violation of military regulations as well as US Civil and Criminal Law. You can guess that the war criminal, GEN Otis and his officers, thought it did not apply in the Philippine Islands?

Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Friday, Dec. 23d, 18981. Have I mentioned that... a. news, which the cockroach ought not to have about troop movements, keeps showing up in these diary passages and b. Milsaps is illiterate? 2. Not relevant. The war criminal, GEN Otis, and the firebug, GEN Hughes, have been doing everything short of waving a red shirt in front of the Filipino national liberationists to provoke an incident. Of course there is trouble brewing, but it is not necessarilly the fault of Aguinaldo. The historically spotty record, we have seen thus far, would suggest that the provocations are not on the Filipino side of things... this time. 3. Samuel Krell... Apparently he was a professional photographer and fully capable of taking and devloping his own photographs. So why is the cockroach involved? Simple; the cockroach is using PVT Krell to do his own work for him. 4. Dewey took Iloilo illegally, but now he needs troops to hang on to his illegal conquest. Go navy? 5. Referring the Red Cross box sent by Mrs. Belle Wheeler of West Berkeley to the cockroach... guess who actually has it? 6. To date, nobody has asked Milsaps to lecture on the Philippine Islands. As long as there are soldiers like Welch who are out there doing the grunt work, who needs the cockroach? 7. Guess who will pay for that ferry ride to Corrigidor? It will not be the cockroach. 8. No free dollar escapes Milsapos, if he can grasp it. 9. PVT Hanson conned the cockroach out of a free meal? Chaplain Mailie may have invited the cockroach to share a service with the 1st Nebraska, but that is not the same as authorizing the cockroach to HOLD a service. Army chaplain means army mandated service for "troop morale". Mailie could come from two regions, Chester in England, or Burgundy in France. My guess is that the chaplain is from the New York branch of the Mailies (Who came over with the expedition that turned New Amsterdam into New York) and that he is an Episcopalian descendant of the American cadet branch, which means he has about much use for the cockroach as any of his fellow army chaplains has. 10. PVT Hines recruited two contributors? Someone knew how to work the salvation army con, and it was not Milsaps. 11. Headcount 25, NSA 24, 4% success. ===================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Friday 12-23-9812. You know that missing Red Cross box? (^^^) 13. 1897... "A Christmas Carol"... Charles Ives. The 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves would have been making the rounds with this one along with the old American standby; "Away in a Manger" written in his version by William J. Kirkpatrick in 1895. ==================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Friday, December 23rd, 189814. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits are still doing the jailhouse and outposts split duties thing. Generals Roman and Luna are pushing their lines closer to the old Spanish lines north of the Tondo. 15. Re-up bonuses are nothing new to the American army. Pay the privates a little extra at the end of the year / tour, let them get liquored up on whatever passes for spirits in the local economy and then get them to sign on the roster for another tour.CYNICAL Miletus

Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Saturday, Dec. 24th, 18981. The cultural disconnect is obvious. The cockroach here was not seen to understand that people are people universally and that Christmas in Manila to Christians, would be the same as Christmas to New Yorkers. They celebrate and they go about their business and they have their family and society and their friends around them. 2. He may refer to Krell. 3. PVT. Hines seems to be a soldier barber. The cockroach may have gotten a free shave, but he probably also got nicked in the doing. 4. It is Christmas Eve. How did the cockroach expect to get anything out of the US postal service on Christmas Eve when those people are on holiday? He is not important. The 8th Corps is important. Guess what mail service will receive the priority? 5. The movements of the 20th Kansas *(They have not stolen anything yet.) Volunteer Infantry was probaly well known to the Katipunan spies wandering around in the American rear: nevertheless the gossipy cockroach is eager to write it down in his diary. 6. Eletson, Dansare and Kline got the mail, that the cockroach could not. See 4., for why THAT happened. 7. Kline is a backslider? (SCOFF) Only now has the cockroach sort of sniffed out that Kline is using him? Kline as much as told Milsaps to go pound coconuts. 8. THAT is how Kline told Milsaps to go pound coconuts; Book Bell and Candle on the Salvation Army. That must have been a rude moment for the cockroach when he got "the word".9. Milsaps assembled his flunkies (including Hines) and went to the service Mailie laid on. 50 soldiers were present out of an authorized TOE of 900+. What did that mean? As the cockroach noted in his diary, the Nebraskans were a bit busy with more immediate concerns to THEM than contributing to his "10th Legion" con job... 10. As for the meeting; Headcount 50, NSA 50, 0% success. Not even Kline? Does an Acme safe have to fall on Milsaps? 11. 12. The 1st Montana received mail. See 4. and 6. . 13. Other headcount 7, NSA 7, 0% success. 14. Gossip. Would the Katipunan attack on Christmas eve? Not likely. Refer to the Nebraskans. They anticipated a surprise and none came. 15. There is no corroborating evidence that this LIE is true. There is evidence that the USN shredded command level correspondence as a security measure. It was not restricted to Dewey alone. =============================================================================== Diary of James J. Loughrey December 24, 189816. That was how the 1st California Flour Mill Thieves brought English language based education to the Filipinos... and had water buffalo stew for Christmas dinner. =============================================================================== Diary of Chriss A. Bell Dec. 19 to 24, 189817. Boy, was he about to be disappointed! =============================================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Saturday 12-24-9818. Notice how Welch gets it? Refer to 1. . 19. I believe that reference is to "plot" as in mapping out the battlespace. The 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves have their hands full, yet their officers are doing all the proper West Point things you would expect them to do to get ready for the worst. Except that most of them are not West Pointers. 20 And they still had time to... =============================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Saturday, December 24th, 189821. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Robbers celebrated Christmas eve the Filipino way.

Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Sunday, Dec. 25th, 18981. Hines paid the fares. Scott told the cockroach to "get bent". 2. I do not actually have proof that the cockroach did not lie to CAPT Geary. I have no proof that he told the truth either. Either way, the arsenal commander should not have authorized or approved an "open air meeting" inside the expletive deleted ammo dump! 3. CAPT Chase Spurgeon (3rd time if you are keeping score on this guy. M.) told the cockroach to "get bent". 4. Rumor mongering is a sin that one expects from the cockroach by now. 5. Open air meeting San Roque gate. Headcount 22, NSA 22, 0% success. The Filipinos were celebrating Christmas Day. Milsaps is a TEXAN and comes through CALIFORNIA. Has he never seen Spanish influenced cultures before? I mean MEXICANS do this. 6. Milsaps had his open air meeting. That was the 18th US Infantry who ridiculed Milsaps, not the Filipinos. Headcount 30, NSA 30, 0% success. 7. That restaurant apparently was a SALOON. True to form, Milsaps tried to bum a meal, but this time had to pay his share of the bill. 8. CPL Long "disappeared". I wonder why? 9. Another attempt at an "open air meeting" was distinctly foiled by a call for the 18th US to assemble. Iloilo was apparently more important than the cockroach. 10. The soldiers actually bummed a meal off the cockroach. Good on them. Notice the cockroach did not wash dishes again? Slovenly was he, and lazy. 11. Third meeting: headcount 17, NSA 16, 9% success. 12. Christmas eve, the Filipinos celebrated. The cockroach complained about the ferstivities? a. He should not be there at all, for he is a colonial imperialist, like the "missionari he is a colonial imperialist, like the "missionaries" of his ilk were b. If you are an uninvited guest and detested by your fellow Americans, should you have not at least tried to learn to adapt to local conditions as the American army was? 13. It was another unproductive day for the cockroach as to "recruiting"; headcount 89, NSA 88, 2% success. 14. The 2 "Spanish soldiers" (See 4.) were SPIES. 15. Why is the cockroach complaining about Filipino celebrations? =============================================================================== Diary of James J. Loughrey December 25, 189816. The 1st California Flour Mill Thieves stuffed themselves on water buffalo and other local Filipino delicacies. See 12. =============================================================================== Diary of Chriss A. Bell Dec. 25, 189817. The 2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry is homesick. ================================================================================ Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Sunday, Christmas, Dec. 25, 9818. Was Alfred Welch not simply amazing? Even by our modern standards he gets it. 19. San Sebastion... (^^^) That is what the Filipinos built in 1891. Not the Germans, not the Spaniards, the Filipinos. They imported the organ and the chimes from Germany, but everything else is Filipino. 20. What were the 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves singing on Christmas Day? a. b. c. I cannot say I think much of the 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves' taste in music. ====================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Sunday, December 25th, 189821. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits seemed to have plonked themselves down for a good old fashioned American Christmas.

Diary of Alberto Masoliver December 26, 18981. First Philippine Republic Flag or a close approximation. The Americans ignored it. It was not that they did not notice it. ==================================================== The cockroach visits Corrigidor and skunks the place up. 2. Because the cockroach is a leech he leaned on Mister Owens for breakfast and lunch. At least the Reverend Owens demanded payment for goods tendered. The cockroach still bummed a free dinner off Mister Owens, so as usual... no sympathy. 3. This is what the cockroach saw on Corrigidor. The tadpole shaped island was heavily forested, except for the two defunct Spanish coastal defense batteries, the light house and a small fishing village upon it this date. There were two trail roads, only two to the summit to the lighthouse and you see that the cockroach still got himself lost? He picked the wrong side of the hill as usual. 3. Headcount 13 or 14, NSA 14, 0% success. DDSR. (Different day, same result. M.). What is the definition of insanity? Refusal to face reality? ======================================================= Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Monday 12-26-984. I think Welch was post-drunk when he wrote this one. What can we extract? a. Hangover and post drunk depression: check. b. Funeral attendance for a US 4th Cav trooper dead of (sickness?) c. Visited the 1st Minnesto and attended their band concert. e. In the Luneta Welch noticed the celebrations and festivities that the Filipinos laid on for EPIPHANY. In Spanish and other Mediterranean society influenced cultures and in many north European cultures as well, Epiphany is when Jesus is introduced to the non-Jewish world as their savior as well as the Jewish Messiah. Depending on what persuasion of Christian you are, this is actually more important that the Magi showed up and made the discovery and declaration than the actual "birthday". We Three Kings Disoriented are and all that. f. Cock-fighting is like American football in this context. People are people and sports is celebratory and part of the social experience for us in this holiday period. I do not approve on practical grounds of cockfighting as it is a grisly nasty business with definite negative social fallout. But then the human savagery of American football and the side betting on IT is condemned by non-Americans for similar reasons, so each culture has its "sports". Mathew 7.1. comes into play and so grit your teeth. ====================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Monday, December 26th, 18985. Back to the usual routine of outpost duty and jailhouse guards for the 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits.

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Tuesday, December 27th, 18981. The big news is that the Filipino National Liberationists have shifted their military center of mass from north to south. For now. This is a deception operation and it is a clever one. =============================================================================== Diary of John E.T. MilsapsTuesday, Dec. 27th, 18982. The cockroach claims he works hard. Can the cockroach not find five minutes to do dishes? 3. True. But the cockroach is not smart about he works or how to allocate his time or his physical effort. He is "inefficient". 4. Note the way he mishandles his mail. Refer to 3. . 5. Petrel Actual might have made a mistake. 6. Notice after all this time, that the cockroach still does not know how to properly cook and store his meals? 7. The cockroach held another recruitment "camp meeting" at the 2nd Reserve Hospital. His success rate was 0%. Big surprise. 8. The cockroach paid money for some more sea shells that he could go down to the beach and pick up for FREE. Talk about economic incompetence? 9. Back at the old homestead, the cockroach attempts another camp meeting. Headcount 45, NSA 45, 0% success. 10. 11. Did you get the feeling that the cockroach had to personally try to cionvince his flunkies to stick with the con he was running? 12. Krell. 13. Rumor mongering here is meaningless. Again too much gossiping: the 1st South Dakota Lousy Baseball Players may have been restricted to base to act as a "fire brigade" for example. 14. HC 8, NSA 8, 0% success. Perhaps the Cockroach may suffer a crisis of confidence soon?

link Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Wednesday 12-28-981. Unpack this one: a. The master plot of the battlespace is complete. And I am astonished. For you see I had been taught that a master plot pre-battle had been a French WWI invention. Here we see that CAPT Welch has been doing one for two weeks for Manila 1899. b. Epiphany is still ongoing. c. Paco Boneyard. Possibly from the 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves Archives. d. The 1st Tennessee Chicken Thieves. e. He means Krags, not Krafs, and nitrocellulose propellant packed cartridges, not black powder. f. Iloilo has an underwater cable running to Manila. It appears the USN used it and hollered for help. The war criminal, GEN Otis, was not happy about that one. g. GEN Hughes, the firebug, is rotating units out for rest, refit, reassignment, and retraining, the R4s. =============================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Wednesday, December 28th, 1898 2. Unpack this: a. Asendorf has acclimated thoroughly. b. the 10th Pennsylavania Train Robbers are 1 in 4 on the line. Most of the regiment is quarters restricted. c. The arson has started just northeast of the Tondo. =============================================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Wednesday, Dec. 28th, 18983. Notice that the cockroach has NOT acclimated to the Philippine Climate? 3. Summary of his visit to the 1st South Dakota Lousy Baseball Players can be summarized thusly. He made a pest of himself and achieved nothing... as usual. 4. SGT Chic is a curious case. Of course the cockroach bummed a meal off of him. Then; the fool gave an unauthorized "yahoo", a complete tour of what should have been a restricted to unauthorized persons area. 5. Mister Tarsney has to be explained and that so that the cockroach's meeting with him can be properly understood. When Mister Tarsney told the cockroach that he had "talked" to Mister Najeeb Hashin on the cockroach's behalf and that Hashin the Syrian had forgiven 20 days debt the cockroach owed him, this was more like the "Godfather" than a friend of a friend doing a favor. I have commented before that I was suprised by some of the 'cockroach's acquaintances. Scum eddies together, so why not the local gangster, cashiered out of the 1st Colorado and the cockroach? 6. More seashells. 7. Sent a pay me letter to his Salvation Army sponsor and paymaster. 8. HC 55, NSA 55, *(Counting the 50 Lousy Baseball Players who rejected his spiel at the 1st South Dakota campmeeting. M.), 0% success. 9. NSA all day long. 10 More gossip about pending troubles in the Manila Times.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Thursday 12-29-981. See Map. North is left of image. 2. Welch waltzed around the terrain east of the Intramuros with a Katipunan tour guide escort as a courtesy, who watched him sketch in future American artillery positions as if he was a mere landscape artist. Expletive deleted unbelievable! They had no idea that this man is doing a terrain study? 3. Futbol or soccer if you are an American. 4. Welch sized up his future opposition. All of them armed with Mausers. Not too good as the Americans now understand. Hence why the Americans re-equiped with Krags and smokless powder cartridges to replace their blacck powder Trapdoor Allins as soon as they could. =============================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Thursday, December 29th, 18985. The 1st South Dakota Lousy Baseball Players are improving. This time the 10th Pennsylvania Train Robbers were only able to beat them by 5 runs instead of the previous usual 11 or 12. The South Dakotans needed the following; a good shortstop, a 3rd baseman who knew his position, decent pitching, and a set of umpires who would not take bribes. When they called strikes away from you and outside the plate and at your ears high, there is a bit of "cheating" happening somewhere... =============================================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Thursday, Dec. 29th, 18986. The Cloudkuckoolander cockroach thinks that his year has been a success? Well, he was looking at it from his point of demented view. See 8. . 7. Well I am glad that the two Methodists connected inspite of the cockroach as their go-between. With a friend like the cockroach, they needed each other to watch each other's backs. 8. Joseph Gomez is the first Filipino that the cockroach has hired to develop film for him. I suppose the prices in Hong Kong were so steep that even a racist like the cockroach would turn Progressive: "Business is buusiness..." 9. More she sells sea shells by the sea shore. Whoever she was, the Filipina who latched onto the cockroach as a sucker, er, customer; good for her! 10. I interpret this revisionism to actually mean that the saloon keeper told the cockroach to pay up his bar tab or he, Silvers, would "bounce him". 11. Milsaps pestered soldiers on leave and they blew him off. 12. The 18th US Infantry had embarked yesterday. 13. Mister Owens wanted to divest himself of a cockroach and did not want to pay rent anymore to the same pest. Could you blame him after all the meals and other things that Milsaps bummed off the man? 14. Mister David Brown at least is convivalizing with US soldiers. A drunken preacher hiccuping the gospel at them made more of a positive impression on the line infantry than the cockroach ever did. 15. Headcount 5, NSA 5, well you know the success rate, 0%. 16. Send me money letters written? 4 out of 4 according to SA archives. 17. There is the shortstop who needed replacement. 18. Reread that section as Milsaps actually finally found out who GOT his red cross package from Belle 2 days ago. He was NOT involved in the distribution. The US postal service was. How do I know this? Some of those units are so far apart, it should have taken the cockroach 2 days to cover the line and distribute contents. If the contents are completely distributed NOW and the cockroach only reported he knows about it NOW, then QED, the contents were distributed over the previous 2 days by SOMEBODY else, and it was not the cockroach. 19. This is the same Barker who wrote to the cockroach to get bent in a letter a week ago? Hilarious. 20. All of these donors are from the San Francisco Salvation Army branch, not the US armed forces. They sent the cockroach a care package. None of it reached the American soldiery. Wonder why?

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Friday 12-30-981. You know what the black flag means? a. Explanation 1. It could mean the Filipino people espouse Anarchism. Not very likely. b. An American might mistake it for the Unreconstructed Confederate symbol for "Take no Prisoners", an American variation on the traditional European "bloody shirt" flag used during siege warfare to let both sides know; "all bets are off"; so prepare to meet your maker. c. Welch's explanation; that of mourning, is the historically accepted one. Jose Rizal was martyred in the eyes of the Filipino people. This will become an OBJECT LESSON for the Americans when they finally catch Emilio Aguinaldo. Make no martyrs. 2. The 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves serenaded the 1st North Dakota Volunteer Infantry and the 14th US Infantry. ======================================================================= Diary of John Henry Asendorf Friday, December 30th, 18983. Considering that C Co. of the 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits is down to 80 men on the roster and that 15 of them are "sick" and 2 more in hospital; it means that the company is short of 17 "rifles" if they have to go into the line. 63 men. 4. That would be the 18th US Infantry which headed for Iloilo. 5. The Train Bandits have been noted as this time as being part of GEN "firebug" Hughes "urban renewal program north of the train station as some of the slums were evacuated and the huts burned to "clear lanes of fire". Remember, the Filipinos did not start the arsons which will escalate out of control. The Americans did. ====================================================================== How is the cockroach closing out the year? Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Friday, Dec. 30th, 18986. Well; thr cockroach plans to harass the 1st South Dakota Lousy Baseball Players, and make a nuisance of himself at the convalescent hospital established on Corrigidor. 7. Headcount 16, NSA 16, success 0%. 8. Someone told the cockroach what all the black flags meant. 9. Notice that the cockroach wrote 4 more latters pleading for money. 10. He also got the date wrong on the anniversary of Jose Rizal's death. The Filipino national hero was executed on 30 December 1896, not 1897. It is the 2nd Anniversary.

Diary of James J. Loughrey December 31, 18981. Though they do not know it, the 1st California Flour Mill Thieves hit exactly the right "horrible" note for what is coming. =============================================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Saturday 12-31-982. PUENTE DE ESPAÑA or The Jones Bridge Location: Jones bridge, Manila Philippines Wayback 1880's and then 1930s Notice the engineering and construction? Beautiful. I mean really beautiful. 3. The Club Filipino still exists. In American terms it is akin to the Skull and Bones. The Filipino society is less bloodthirsty and presumably more moralistic than the Yale Devils. ============================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Saturday, December 31st, 18984. That is GEN "Firebug" Hughes' theme song for what HE is planning for Manila... =============================================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Saturday, Dec. 31st, 18985. By any reasonable metric, the cockroach is delusional. He has been a burden and an annoyance to those he has bothered, and as for spreading the "message", look at how many he has driven away? 6. Case in point... The 1st South Dakota Lousy Baseball Player camp meeting: headcount 85, NSA 85, 0% success. 7. Better times for the Spanish before the Americans occupied it. It still exists. 8. Note that the cockroach got that old African American song lyric wrong? He also took credit for what the American soldiers organized for themselves without his unnecessary and useless help? What did PVT Georgeson need him for? Nothing. 9. Do you believe this LIE?10. Owens was sent to the Mail House because by now the cockroach has figured out that the postal employees and clerks hate his stinking guts. Judging from the comments on the mail and what I found elsewhere, London is asking about his "mission", the Barcelona agent was told that Milsaps was the point of contact for spreading Tagalog gospels, which is kind of funny since those were translated from the CATHOLIC Spanish bible and duplicated earlier Spanish and Filipino work. Symons has demanded payment for the film he processed for the cockroach in Hong Kong. Note that all of these yahoos, except the shafted photographer Symons, are Salvation Army people. The cockroach got $18,00 from the San Francisco branch who sponsored his mission. 11. Headcount 6, NSA 6, 0% success. 12. William Eletson USN has a BIG mouth. 13. More on the mails: --- by now the cockroach's primary function in Manila, to be a newspaper delivery boy for the War Cry, has long been apparent to me. At a nickel a throw he should generate about $5.95. Hardly seems worth having him in Manila, does it? The Salvation Army could have the military mails deliver it, except that would violate the "Establishment Clause". The strange thing (^^^) is that the Katipunan and the Ilustrados especially went to war with Spain with that freedom from state mandated religion as one of their main motives and here come the Americans to rob them of their nation and right of self rule, but then the same colonialist imperialist Americans will GUARANTEE freedom of assembly, redress by petition of greivances, freedom from /of religion and the right to a representative (albeit colonialist) Filipino government. That is more than most of the other planet is getting at this time. 14. Why does the cockroach need a "bodyguard" to go to Corrigidor? What did he do? 15. So the saloons were full of noisy American soldiers. At least they were not being conned and robbed by "Snidely Whiplash". Saloon keeper Silvers was giving them food and drink and a good time for their pay, not some song and spiel about how guilty and sinful the soldiers were for enjoying their lives. 16. Remember THIS: 17. What kind of man disrespects the dead as a JOKE or violates human remains? CYNICAL Miletus

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Jan. 1st — 1899, Manila, Cuartel de Tabacolaris [Tabacalera]. Welchen1. The "4" is the 4th US Cavalry. Shock troops. 2. 1ST-US-ARTILLERY-PRACTICE-LUNETA-MANILA-PHILIPPINES-SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR...1898. Item #1313: NORTH END OF THE LUNETA, MANILA, LUZON. Taken in 1898. Completely remodeled in 1901 from A Pronouncing Gazetteer and Geographical Dictionary of the Philippine Islands, Unit states of America, with Maps, Charts, and Illustrations. It is my opinion from the photos above that the park was used as a training range by the war criminal, GEN Otis, to train his corps gunners in the use of the new guns they took over from the Aster Battery which had departed from Manila at the beginning of December. That puts these photos in the time period of after November 30 1898. 3. They sure loved their bands, both the Filipinos and the Americans. (^^^) That one is a Filipino band circa 1890s, exact year unknown. 4. Why is a staff wiener pulling QM duties? =============================================================================== Diary of James J. Loughrey January 1, 18995. The 1st California Flour Mill Thieves, like the 1st Washington Tobacco Factory Thieves are told to "saddle up". Ostensibly this means to furniture the horse so you can ride him, but in American military parlance, it can also mean get ready to "move out for combat deployment". =============================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Sunday, January 1st, 18996. From 8th Corps records and rosters, we know there were about 18,200 American soldiers assigned / present inside the Philippine Islands. Roughly 2,000 of them were headed for Iloilo on this date. On the sick lists in the 3 sick camps in Manila and Manila Bay, there were a combined 2,600 sick men. Remember that there was a smallpox epidemic raging at this time and most of these men had never been exposed to tropical fungii and malaria, either. This left the war criminal, GEN Otis with 13,600 effectives on hand to face about 3X Filipino national liberationists or 40,000 Katipunan. 7. Even if only half of the Katipunan had firearms, as a American, I would not have liked those odds. And as we shall see, the war criminal, GEN Otis, is not the brightest sword in the American sheath. 8. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits seem to be oblivious to the "boots and saddles" going on. 9. Frank Brain has smallpox. He might not make it. =============================================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Sunday, Jan. 1st, 189910. The cockroach stiffed Scott for the ferry fares again. I have not ascertained how a US army private had so much money that he could pay for meals, mail service, and combined ferry and carriage fares for everybody in the cockroach's coterie. You can draw your own conclusions, but in that gang of yahoos, connivers and fixers and thieves (Hines stole from the US commissariat, to give Milsaps groceries, as you remember? M.), I think Scott found a way to earn "side income". I just do not know what he did, yet. He certainly did not earn it the "book way". 11. The Corrigidor trip was a bust. The 1st Colorado Volunteer Infantry (I think they stole a furniture factory, but until I nail it down, I cannot call them Furniture Finaglers, yet. M.) marching band out-Sousaed the Cockroach. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits chaplain (Hunter) kicked the cockroach out of his mass. 12. Stockton told the cockroach "he was saved" to get rid of Milsaps. Schneiderman, less politic, told the cockroach to go meet the devil. 13. The cockroach has a thing for cemeteries, does he not? Yeetch. 14. What you see above is the bombed out remains of the American movie theater, barracks, hospital, post headquarters and parade ground. You can see the memorial foreground. You can even see the expletive deleted remnants of the golf course if you look hard enough. 15. The graveyard was located between Camp Point and Ordnance Point. The Spanish mausoleum was broken into and robbed. It was disgraceful even back then, and that the cockjroach thinks nothing ill of it, spoke volumes about him and also the soldiers who desecrated the tomb. 16. I liked Major Owens. He was trying to handle a medical catastrophe that had put hundreds of men onto Corrigidor with illnesses he probably never had seen before, and here comes this piece of human offal to pester his patients and him with his, Milsaps', cockamamie drivel about "Repent you guilty sinner and meet the Maker", when the army doctor knows that the best cure for his patients with the medical science of the day, was bed rest, optimistic pep talks from friends and visitors / acquaintances, and upbeat religion to lift the spirits of his patients, not the manure for money contributions superstitious drivel that Milsaps peddled.
"Aggressive infidel." The cockroach naturally did not like the man who called him what he was, a useless pest. 17. The cockroach handed out War Crys to his coterie to hawk out to their parent army units. I noticed that the cockroach no longer distributed these rags, himself, in person. I think he wore out his welcome at those units. 18. Headcount 9, all of his previous flunkies, so 0% success of new recruits.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Monday 1-2-991. You get the feeling that Washington has no clue of local conditions? Welch, who up to now, has been the most realistic of our diarists, has introduced a sour note, has he not? ================================================================================ Diary of John Henry Asendorf Monday, January 2nd, 18992. That is another 1,000 men headed for Iloilo, not "Hoila". 3. (^^^) "Arrogance and stupidity". =============================================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Monday, Jan. 2d, 18994. How many times has the cockroach left dirty dishes behind to attract flies, mosquitos and his insect namesakes? Filthy man with filthy habits is what I still read. 5. One of the rare times the cockroach had to pay his own ferry fare, this was. 6. Thomas J. Tarnsey (The cockroach misspelled his name, go figure. M.), Based on the Wikipedia entry about the man, he seems to have been a decent ADJ GEN and servant of the Republic. Why he would associate with the cockroach in any capacity is beyond me. Nevertheless, it is Tansley who arranged for the cockroach to make the trip to Marivales into "bandit country". 7. The trip to Marivales makes no sense to me for the cockroach; unless he had some business with Schneiderman that involved things he did not wish to write into his diary. More on that in a moment. 8. He bought more seashells. 9. He wrote 9 and 1/2 pages longhand. That takes me about forty minutes if I want to be neat and legible on 8 x 11.5 lined legal pad. I assume he was as efficient as I am. 10. Based on 9., the "Manila 2" was making 6 knots. 11. This was Tansley's expedition to drum up shipping trade, since he rented the former Spanish steamer from its current Filipino owners. The American flag was used; so that Dewey's gun happy sailors did not open fire on a smuggling boat. The cockroach was deadhead, even though he allegedly paid fare. IOW Milsaps was bumming a freighter ride to go sightseeing and conducting a little side business in "bandit country" with Schneiderman who was a "black marketeer". 12. The Katipunan had fortified the church. Of course they would object to the cockroach taking pictures of a fortified point. 13. The "blockhouse" was the police station. 14. The cockroach availed himself of the opportunity to pilfer Marivales public records which now reside with his letters collection which he gifted to the University of Texas, Austin. 15. Spanish captain and crew, yet... Even by the reprehensible bigotted standards of 1898, the cockroach was a racist piece of filth. M.16. T. J. Tarnsey offered the cockroach deadhead status for Salvation Army business. Was he nuts? 17. What the cockroach means about his discussions is that he bothered the crew with his "spiel" and it was NSA as usual. 18. See 15. M.19. The cockroach traveled 62 miles, and wasted 3 hours ashore as a mouth breather gallivanting. That was 13 hours total. For that fool, it was another long unproductive meaningless day, wherein he was a useless pest who annoyed people and made new enemies. Or was it? See next. 20. Who was in the reading room with it lighted up? The other half of the Sneiderman "deal" for which the cockroach was the go-between? Could be. 21. The steamer towing a sloop, was one of the misappropiated *(stolen) Spanish gunboats, now in US service, towing in a "smuggler". Want to guess why the cockroach noticed it? (See 20. M.). It could be that the cockroach was like the Irishman standing before the judge trying him for the crime of trading whiskey to the Native Americans, who swears; "T'is entirely innocent I am, your honor. I do not know how that keg of whiskey got on me wagon without me seeing it put there by persons unknown to me." He may not have direct knowledge of the happenings, but he does not pass the "smell test". 22. Translating that gobbledegook into English, it means that the local nationalists on Panay had broken ranks and faith with the Aguinaldo coterie and had declared their own "republic"; thus "legitimizing" the war criminal, Gen Otis', own illegal and immoral; actions to stamp out a "rebellion". Even Aguinaldo might tuirn a blind eye to such an outrageous action; if the insurgents on Panay were rebels to HIM as well as the Americans. 23. Another regiment to throw into the line and replace the troops sent to Iloilo. Note however that this reinforcement does little to change the 3 to 1 odds the Americans face since all Generals Roman and Luna have to do, is call in those Katipunan troops they have training on the Lingayen plains. About 4,000 of them. 24. And headcount 10, flunkies 10, NSA 10, 0% success. 25. War Crys same as the previous day. The Flunkies do the work, and the cockroach takes the credit and the money.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Tuesday 1-3-991. Modern church at that spot. MAP location.I say modern Church because American artillery kind of wrecked the old one in 1899, and then the Americans did it again in 1944. The first time was a war crime, the second time was "liberation", but it amounts to the same thing, desecration. 2. The 1st California Flour Mill Thieves are headed for Panay. Things are getting out of hand on the island. The yanquis are in trouble. ===================================================== Diary of James J. Loughrey January 3, 18993. Just for grins and giggles I* include a thread about transports and warships swanning around the Philippine Islands in 1899. A lot of them are wooden sail and steamships taken up from trade (STUFT) ships that plied the Pacific trade routes. 4. As far as I can tell, the Cazadero could have been a local Spanish steam and sail schooner pressed into service (Ships stolen by the American army), to ferry troops around the Philippine Islands. The only other possible candidate was a paddle wheel train ferry from Sausalito, California that could not have possibly made the trans-Pacific voyage. Whatever it was, the ship hung up on the sand bar at the mouth of the Pasing River, because her incompetent captain misread the USN provided tide tables. The ship had to be floated off at the afternoon tide the following day and because the hired nitwits aboard could not sound her out by lead line to find the right channel for her draft, the USN had local Filipinos (Spaniards could not be trusted. M.) pilot the two USN tugs that towed her out. 5. I believe the Filipino boy was rescued by some of the missionaries after the Flour Mill Thieves boarded their transport. The cockroach was not one of those missionaries. I would like to think it was Mister Owens. =================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Tuesday, Jan. 3d, 18996. Happy Birthday cockroach; 47 years on the planet, 30 as an adult and from the diary entries, it is apparent to me that he was still an incomplete idiot. It would take some more wretched wasted years as a mouth breather to produce the diarist I intensely dislike as a subject of commentary, today. 7. As a self analytical entity, the cockroach, when he comments about himself, is a source of hilarity as long as you can ignore the actual evil he does. I read his diary entries and I cannot understand how he can blissfully waltz through life unaware of just how so many people actually regard him with disdain and disgust. 8. L. B. Armstrong sent the Tagalog gospels, and Spanish language come to meeting books common to the Salvation Army of 1898. The French had as little love for the protestant missionaries / mercenaries as the Spanish did. The post had to be disguised in some manner. 9. Armstrong, as I commented earlier, gets no credit. The translations were all the work of Filipino scholars previously cited. The cockroach, either does not know Armstrong's chicanery, or assumes the man's lies are true and repeats them. 10. Major C. L. Tilden is a salvation army man out of SanFran. Have you noticed how these yahoos all give themselves exalted ranks in the 1898 Salvation Army? I note that the cockroach claimed he came into Manila with the Flour Mill Thieves, the same day they marched in. This is a lie. Apparently Tilden accepted the lie as the truth and based his charity on that misapprehension that the cockroach was marching in with the 1st California, as a preacher of the gospel. 11. The notice was a USMG notice for civil administration purposes. 12. There was trouble at Iloilo, but not what the cockroach thought. GEN Miller had screwed up badly, or rather the war criminal GEN Otis, had not informed him what he, Otis, had illegally done. That was what set off the fuse train that will lead to shooting very soon. The only other fiasco like this none that comes to my mind is the Marco Polo Bridge Incident where mutinous Japanese officers ignited the Second Sino Japanese War. 13. The trip to the hospital at Malate was a bust. Too late for the camp meeting that his flunkies put together without him, the cockroach went to bother PVT Stegemon to tell him to repent and prepare for death. Swell. Do you think Stegemon made it? 14. And what happens next? The cockroach makes himself a pest at the 14 US Infantry as they try to move out and then he compounds his fruitless stupidity by gadflying the deploying 1st California Flour Mill Thieves. Do you think that some of the sergeants who were up to their ears in "Hurry up and find the men for muster!" were not tempted to draw their Colts and blow the cockroach's brains out? Did it occur to the cockroach, that where these soldiers were headed, that saloons and liquor will be a rare and sometime future thing? Carpe Diem now. 15. The Owens are hard up for cash because the cockroach keeps bumming off of them, depleting their cash reserves. Letting their rent slide is literally "the least he can do for the Owens." A bum is quick to call others bums. 16. Notice that the cockroach is in rent arrears himself. Note that he suddenly has money to fix those arrears. He did not get it from San Francisco or from his religious activities in Manila. So from where did it come? Sneiderman? 17. Milsaps showed up to bother the 1st Montana Sugar Thieves (They stole a warehouse of the stuff.). The meeting had 17 present, half of them Milsaps' flunkies. 17 NSA and 0% success, despite the cockroach's claims about boilerplate "testimonials". Milsaps' "premonition" was a bugler and a sergeant. 18. No conversions, but lots of pestering of busy Americans recorded. (^^^) 19. HC 5, NSA 5, 0% success. 20. David Brown the drunk Methodist ex minister, got more tangible help from Mister Owens than from the cockroach. Wonder why? 21. Here is a hint about 20. ; Brown made it, no thanks to the cockroach. Who gets the credit for that win besides Brown, himself? Owens. Empathy, not judgment is a powerful human aid in salvaging such persons as Mister Brown.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Wednesday 1-4-991. Welch is now part of CoA/3rdBn/1st Washington Tobacco Thieves. 2. This is the same church from the previous day. I could not identify Padre Chico. I did find a photo pre-bombardment in the USG archives. =============================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Wednesday, January 4th, 18993. This was the war criminal, GEN Otis', illegally edited version of the USG proclamation from President McKinley.4. The text of that document as GEN Otis had it published. 5. By the standards of the day and the more relaxed standards of modern American governmental English, the grammar is atrocious, the misspellings frequent, punctuation "unique" and wording is "duplicitous". I am convinced the war criminal dictated this nonsense to a poorly educated clerk typist and had it published first draft, without an adjutant general's proof to correct for those mistakes. 6. Never mind the ARROGANCE in the document, whereby GEN Otis abrogates to himself the right to "interpret policy", as he reads it. =============================================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Wednesday, Jan. 4th, 1899
7. Upset tummy? The cockroach should have taken that old fashioned Filipino remedy called bicarbonate of soda. (INTENSE SARCASM.). 8. He went to the commissariate. There were no suckers and no handouts to be had. He even had to pay his own fare. Notice that the 2 American garrisons are still separated by Katipunan held territory and that the Americans have to use their own ships and boats and HIRE Filipino barges to shuttle troops and supplies. 9. The Post Office (Mail House) clerks told him to "get bent". 10. That is the 1st California Flour Mill Thieves, and 1st Colorado Grave Robbers setting out for Vasayan (Panay) to reinforce that idiot, GEN Miller who, bungled the landings. There are 4 sail and steam schooners identified as: the SS Corazadoes, SS Espana, SS Salvadora and the USS Union. Three of them are STUFT ships and only one is "American". Guess which one was not stolen? 11. The saloon keeper no longer allows the cockroach to keep a "bar tab". 12. More "free" sea shells for the cockroach's collection at $0.10 a shell. 13. Georgeson's visit must have been a mistake. 13. I have not been able to identify the Tennessee tuba player. I am also confused about the next diary entry, which is the address of an existent FILIPINO photography studio of the time. Did the tuba player use the Filipino propietor's chemicals, photo papers, and dark room equipment? In that case this would be the 1st Tennessee Photo Studio Pilferers? 14. The 3rd US Artillery is shooting at floating targets in the bay, at the improvised artillery firing range at the Luneta. Maybe the cockroach needs glasses? 15. The cockroach, being the charitable Christian that he is, had Mister Brown thrown into the street. 16. The cockroach ran into an Ilustrado and did not recognize his "enemy" face to face. That just showed how incredibly stupid about the environment that he was in, that Milsaps was. Many of the "professional class" were as disdainful of "American missionaries" as they were of the Spanish Roman Catholic Church hierarchy, seeing both groups of "alleged clergy" as the same way that most Americans on scene viewed them; as con men.
