I'm falling behind; have to catch up! =============================================================================== Pearl Harbor Day... Diary of John Henry Asendorf Wednesday, December 7th, 18981. All of a sudden these men are back in "basic training". They are being marched into the ground running patrols. =============================================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Wednesday 12-7-98 2. Clerking time for Welch is over. The "best and brightest" are needed at the "front". Yes, there is a "front" at last. =============================================================================== The cockroach. Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Wednesday, Dec. 7th, 18983. 1st paragraph in order. a. The trip to Cavite is "interesting" for how hurried our late riser was in getting his manure assembled. b. So the Owens "paid the freight" instead of Scott. Where is Scott? c. The CAPT and the SgtMAJ put the cockroach to rights about his "Spanishb delusions". 8th Corps was finding some atrocious stuff, but by and large Milsaps' image of a depraved "Inquisition" is pure poppycockadoodledoo. d. Other people who told the cockroach to pound air were; ---Chase Spurgeon (see previous above) who told the cockroach to go to the hot place. ---Ed Franzen is in the guard house for fighting. He lied about "returning to Jesus as drunks usually do. ---The other two backsliders told the cockroach to mind his own oar and let them tend theirs. 4. the 2md paragraph. a. That "English Shipyard" is USN property now. b. San Roque was picketed and formed the southern boundary of the "front line". Luna's troops were under orders to not give the war criminal, Otis, an excuse. This very much reminds me of the Marco Polo bridge with the cockroach, blissfully unaware, being an opportunity for the local American commander (the firebug, GEN Hughes and whoever commanded the 1st California ) to exploit an "incident" like Toro Morita did. c. The cockroach does not know the difference between a US "volunteer" and a Marine? d. The causeway was route the Americans used to bumrush the Katipunan out of San Roquette about 2 months from now. 5. The cockroach had no-one to bum a meal off. The Owens are learning. 6. I took an "unwanted" trip south to the Atlantic coast courtesy of the USG. Want to see my FREE sea shell collection? I have a large one. Some real beauties including one once worn by a hurricane killed nautilus were just there for me to pick up as I examined the wreckage. The cockroach is a rube. 7. Milsaps had to pay for his own ferry ride. Where is PVT. Scott again? 8. Hah! Olympia Actual Baltimored the cockroach! As for the fallback, USS Charleston is "iffy", now. 9. Headcount 8. NSA 8, Told to pound air twice, 0% success. 10. I suspect that is the Holy Ghost the cockroach refers to.

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Thursday, December 8th, 18981. The Tondo and Manila train station areas are quiet. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits are having a quiet day. See Map. ===================================================== How is Welch doing? Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Thursday 12-8-982. See position 20? Just outside Santa Domingo gate and the words; "NOT TOO GOOD" are the answer to the question. The 1st Idaho got themselves shot up and had to be relieved on the line. 3. This incident delayed the onset of hostilities as the war criminal, GEN Oris, reviewed American readiness, as in "Not ready." ========================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Thursday, Dec. 8th, 18984. Two more "go pound airs" from 2 backsliders. 5. Either that refers to a lot of Milsaps "friends" turning Methodists, or abandoning the London faction to go "American missionary". Hint: it is both. 6. 1st Nebraske is headed for Caloocan City. 7. I find the idea of the cockroach breaking up a fight "not credible". 8. Keefer is ouit of his mind. 9. I question why Milsaps is having receipts for contributions printed: ---- after the tickets fiasco, why is McCullough doing business with the cockroach? ---- a soldier can be given a foolscrap receipt. ---- what contributions? ---- when the cockroach refers to "Army", he means the Salvation Army, NOT THE REAL ONE. 10. See photo. So PVT Aimee was bilked for that. (^^^) 11. Hive, Berry and Lloyd (Sounds like a contemporary music hall act. M.) setg up the first grammophone play for pay and Milsaps actually earns dinero "honestly". (Many were credited... i.e. promised they would pay on payday. The army will hold them to that contract, so yes Milsaps earned $25.00. M.) 12. Headcount 5, NSA 5, religious con... 0% success. Stick to the grammophone for now, cockroach. CYNICAL Miletus

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Friday, December 9th, 18981. It is hard to figure out today what C Company, 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits is about this date. Asendorf is still acting supply clerk receiving the week's rations. Whore patrols are still ongoing, and there is the guard detail for the Bilibid. Rather small one, I might add. =============================================================================== The cockroach. Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Friday, Dec. 9th, 1898 2. Well let us interpret this drivel shall we? 3. Did the cockroach pick up a touch of malaria? He should have acclimated by now. Plus he is from TEXAS, a state known for its hot weather. 4. He followed his usual routine of preparing his hot breakfast and dinner and cold lunch. 5. He spent a lot of his day working on Spanish manuscripts he "picked up" from Cavite? Let me read that again... Meaning he STOLE official government property and records belonging to the government of the United States as the proper custodian of such ENEMY records left in a captured enemy facility. In point of fact, such records after a peace treaty was concluded, should have been returned to the government of record, either the Filipino Republic, which should have been the heir of such records, or to Spain which government generated the records. 6. Helped some beggars? How? Preached at them? Pointed them at a means to earn their keep? Threw them coins? Some details would fill in the nagging suspicion that I have that he just told them to come to Jesus, without any practical application as to how. 7. Headcount 14, NSA 14, 0% success. 8. Now to what really concerns the cockroach... MONEY. 9. The cockroach is not a very good business person. 10. As previous, I commented that McCullough probably had had it with the cockroach. So expect further trouble about the "receipts". 11. About the only thing the cockroach seems able to do well, is to pick up his mail and the propaganda sent him and distribute the same ineffectually hither and yon. Ever run into that form of humanity called a mouthbreather? 12. Second time for PVT English. If he lied once, he lied twice and hence he is STILL NSA. 13. See 9. about the War Cries. ============================================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Friday 12-9-98 14. You get the feeling that Welch is not seeing the same thing Milsaps and Asendorf are? Like maybe he is actually plugged into what "official channels" believes.

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Saturday, December 10th, 18981. Asendorf finished yesterday's receipt of supplies and issues same out today. He is acclimated. 2. The 13th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry got a bum steer. They are too good to send home. The war criminal, GEN Otis will extend their "paid vacation trip" a few months. (INTENSE SARCASM) =============================================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Saturday 12-10-983. See Map. The Spanish "blockhouses" formed the nucleus of the American southern perimeter around Manila City. Not Understood or or even taught outside the Marine Corps is that the Katipunan had split the American line between the Manila US army garrison proper and the USMC garrison at the Cavite naval base. General Luna was quite the clever man as he infiltrated the American patrols. All US communication between the two positions is now only securely possible by navy launch or Filipino bascoes. It is not ideal for the Americans at all; it is in fact quite dangerous if and when the shooting starts. Also, Luna is putting pressure on the American southeastern perimeter in a similar fashion. The American command situation here is in complete chaos and has administratively broken dowm. Makes you wonder what Luna would have done, if Aguinaldo had supported him and ordered an attack about this time? 4. The Americans are going to get zoolologically educated in a hurry. Monkeys have tails. It was a macaque that stole Welch's dinner. Very clever are macaques. See video. ============================================================================================ Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Saturday, Dec. 10th, 18985. The cockroach is still arranging the Spanish documents he stole. I am amazed that with the rains the rest of the American line was getting that the Tondo seems to have a dry spell. 6. How interesting that Milsaps to date has a success rate of less than 1% preaching after a month of work and here, Owens after two weeks has 1 Chinese and 1 Spanish person learning English and Methodism. Also one of Milsaps' mortal theological enemies, Mr. D. Brown, who is a pentecostal, has sublet off the Owens', This is triply hilarious as it is that man's rents which makes up the Owens' half of the rents paid to that cockroach, Milsaps, to catch up in his own arrears to his Filipino landlady! 7. True to form, the cockroach bummed another meal off the Owens. 8. Bummed a dinner off of Hines and Lloyd. Notice that Scott is still missing? 9. Headcount 8, NSA 8, 0% success. 10. True to form, Charleston Actual is the one USN CAPT who goofs it up and gives the cockroach an opening. Is it any wonder this nitwit will lose the ship? 11. McCullough did not get the proofs he needed for the "receipts". Naturally Milsaps blames McCullough for this error on Milsaps' part. 12. I must remind the reader that the cockroach is SELLING these essentially "free" War Cries at a nickel a throw to his "contributors". With him it is about the money, always... not the message. Sic the IRS on this guy. You are seeing and hearing and READING the classic con-man. Notice the methods in play. That is akin to Milsaps and the actual harm he did in Manila in 1898. About Paul... and the message: CYNICAL Miletus.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Sunday 12-11-981. US army custom. Units when they visited each other, had mens' choirs and "chamber orchestras" and put on "shows". This still happens as each American army garrison has its own impromptu band and "actors troupe" that performs shows for the "isolated" garrison as part of its (morale, welfare and recreation) MWR base operation. 2. A Filipino Katipunan scout was shot. This is an American army that has been at war since June. By now the sergeants have taught the line infantry the basics and though the West Pointers are few in 8th Corps, they also have been schooling their national guard counterparts on the ways of the Native American Wars. They still have to teach the "volunteer infantry" a lot of the basics of patrol and advance to contact, but by now the pickets do know how to picket very well, even if the command setup is still chaotic. =============================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Sunday, December 11th, 18983. On the Katipunan side of the line, we see not so much a picket line and a "front" as much as a presence and "checkpoint security". That is more characteristic of an occupation army than a national liberation army, and it shows me that the Katipunan had not learned the correct lessons from their brief campaign against the Spanish. 4. On the other hand, in a manner which I approve, the women took up arms with the men and that is the part of the "revolutionary movement", its functional egalitarianism, that the Katipunan got right. 5. Funny how the "German cigar maker" knew how to breeze right through the Katipunan check points, is it not? 6. Do not think Asendorf is THAT NAIVE. He knows what he does... (wink, wink.) =============================================================================== Now for those "diarists" who are clueless... I mean the cockroach... Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Sunday, Dec. 11th, 1898Right from the beginning, I want to write that General Order 100 was breached from the go and that wanton destruction of public property, churches and civil infrastructure not related to necessary military operations by 8th Corps under GEN Otis' administration is a historic war crime in fact. He, GEN Otis, was responsible as officer in command to maintain order and discipline to prevent this material atrocity from occuring. Thjs event happened before the genocide in North Luzon and the "rifle hunts". So you understand why I write "war criminal", when I refer to Otis as early as this date long before GEN Hughes' arson and the Battle of Tondo? 7. Camp rumors, scuttlebutt and bilge are not what reasonable women or men regard as factual information. The best we can ascertain from the cockroach's diary entry is that he is uneasy. That is factual. What we see reported in the diary entries of Welch, Asendorf and the Cockroach, are some troop movements north of the Tondo and it is that 2nd Brigade of 8th Corps is massing south of Caloocan for some reason. 8. Now that the elephant is at the door we see the cockroach show a little yellow stripe down the back. 9. Scott showed up! The cockroach promptly " touched him for" for ferry fares. 10. USS Monadnock was not doing anything abnormal, as long as you remember that the American army had this bad habit of hugging the navy like a safety blanket. This tendency goes way back to a place called Pittsburgh Landing. 11. IOW naval gunfire support from the USS Monadnock is worth 1,000 line infantry. 12. USS Charleston held a dog and pony show for Milsaps. I do not know where Milsaps got the idea that the fleet did not hold services or invite outside denominational activity. It is USN tradition Religion, however, as through approved channels is mandated the USN way. It is only rubes, like the cockroach, of which the USN disapproves, who do not understand why the fleet does not allow "politics", religious or otherwise, to corrupt crew discipline. 13. Service held aboard the USS Charleston. No sale American. Milsaps scored not a cent. 14. MIlsaps bummed a meal off the navy and then they hustled him over the side so fast he did not even have time to glad-hand the officers. 15. All in all, Charleston Actual did rather well. He actually Baltimored the cockroach. 16. The hospital visit was another washout. How do I ascertain this? Milsaps records no money "earned" from this visit. 17. Same thing happened with US 18th Infantry. CAPT Spurgeon told the cockroach "to get bent". PVT Franzen had to be more "diplomatic" but again NSA. 18. Milsaps went sightseeing. More on this in a moment. 19. Money issues. Notice that from Manila to Cavite is by ferry. I pointed out yesterday that the Filipino national liberation army had functionally split the American southern front in two and that the two main American positions had to communicate by boat trips. 20. War Cries are sold at a nickel an issue. Is that money rolling in? No. 21. Scott finally touched the cockroach up for a meal... yeah! 22. Headcount 16, NSA 16, 0% success. Milsaps just has not got it. 23. Donations for this date... $5.00. A sucker off the USS Olympia and 1 from the USS Charleston. Explanation. This is past monies promised and not new "contributions". 24. And now for the warcrimes... 25. That is Holy Family School and monastary in Cavite, Luzon that was vandalized. Apparently the USG repaired it (^^^) in 1899, as it SHOULD HAVE.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Monday 12-12-981. Welch worked hard, but wrote little about what work he did. C-Co, 1st Wisconsin Tobacco Thieves has been taking target practice. Close order drill was a US army thing in 1898. Gatling guns were unshipped from Dewey's ships. This meant that field carriages had to be built, limbers constructed, and tack for the horses which will have to haul these heavy naval machine CANNON. 2. Time at the NCO school of the soldier? This is what we now call the platoon leadership course. 3. The visit at 1st Minnesota cattle rustlers seems like a cross unit serenade. 4. The walled city tour is a familiarization of the future battlefield tour. 1-3 is "preparation" for this battlefield... for Welch and for the 8th Corps. =============================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Monday, December 12th, 18985. The new guardhouse is not described. From the way the American army operated in 1898, "guardhouse" could be a large sentry box or a military police station. =============================================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Monday, Dec. 12th, 1898 6. The unit recruitment having failed, the cockroach thinks he will have better pickings among the sick in the army hospitals. 7. Malaria? Possible. 8. Milsaps ratted out Come Outer Turner's scheme to compete with the cockroach's "mission" in Manila. Milsaps spins this as he intends to steal the idea as his own. 9. Brown, the methodist, supposedly reformed. To quote a 1940s American meme...

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Tuesday 12-13-98`1. Intelligence mission. 2. Welch is a mapper and and a surveyor? 3. Another serenade tour to the 13th South Dakota Baseball losers. 4. I have no idea what the 2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry stole... yet. =============================================================================== Diary of Chriss A. Bell Dec. 9-13, 1898 5. I have it! The 2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry are the "bugouts". And of course they are stealing anything not nailed down as "souvenirs". =============================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Tuesday, December 13th, 18986. Smallpox! He survived it. =============================================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Tuesday, Dec. 13th, 18987. Apparently they had Amazon back in 1898 and the "porch pirates" of the 20th Kansas Volunteer Infantry got Milsaps Christmas box from home, before he did. Supply sergeants are the same globally. You do not want to torque one off. SGT Mitchell may become "bureaucratic". 8. The cockroach and PVT Hines tried a rwecruitment at 2nd Brigade Hospital. CAPT Keefer, who had told the cockroach it would be okay previously, is now conveniently "absent" again and his 2nd in command nixes Milsaps' efforts to put "the touch" on the convalescents. With two epidemics ongoing and the wards full of some sick soldiers, I cannot blame the guy. The last thing sick soldiers need is a demotivator like Milsaps. 9. The 1st Tennessee Volunteer Infantry are mainly Evangelical Protestants mostly of the Presbyterean persuasion. Milsaps is No Sale American with these Unreconstructed Confederates. 10. Noticed that McCullough DOUBLED his price of the soldier passes? 11. Wonder if PVT Hines will pull a Scott? 12. The Owens, having wised up, made the cockroach supply food for the meal they shared together. Milsaps has lost ground fast. He cuts no ice with the Methodists anymore.
13. One definition of insanity, is asking a navy CAPT who told you to go walk off the nearest pier and entertain some sharks, AGAIN, if you can come aboard and bother his sailors. Petrel Actual will have to be "politic" about this request. 14. PVT Russell was owed some articles, and came by to "lean on" Milsaps to make sure the cockroach wrote them. 15. Backslider Brown got a suit from the cockroach? What is the catch? 16. PVT Herron is Milsaps' "agent" in the 1st Nebraska Volunteer Infantry. Wonder what his "Take" is off the War Cries he sells? 17. So despite the waveoff, Milsaps preached at a patient ward. 10 present, 10 NSA, 0 % success. 18. 2nd Montana Volunteer Infantry, Headcount 50, NSA 49, 2% success out of the effort. 20. Another wasted day.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Wednesday 12-14-981. Tis the season to go Christmas caroling among the Intramuros. Welch has the Christmas spirit. Cannot find the 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves, but he has that Christmas spirit! ================================================================================ 2. Backslider Brown paid off the white linen suit with 2 steaks, he bummed the steaks off Brother Devine. The cockroach kept 1 and shared the other with the Owens. See yesterday's comments for what is really going on here. 3. PVT Russell's "lean on" was very successful. Again, see yesterday's comments. 4. Ex-SGM Ackeratt told the cockroach to "get bent". He put his own "Christian charity" where his eyes told him, it was nee4ed. The Owens needed the handup. Notice how the cockroach took it? Maybe you can understand why I have more charity for a "black marketeer" who extends help to the financially floundering Methodist couple, than I do to the cockroach? 5. Notice that Ackeratt took fencing lessons. Manila is dangerous as the American patrols are unable to keep the streets safe. Plus where Ackeratt ACTUALLY goes to do business, it might be good for him to know how to handle Chinese and some Filipino "entrepeneurs" in the language they understand? 6. By this time, the cockroach is reduced to a newspaper hawker and free lance journalist, both which in 1898, are next down to actors as the bottom rung "scum of the earth". Notice, further, that he could not get his flunkies, this time, to help him get the War Cries from the mail house and that he had to hire a Carramata to haul the papers and his groceries? (Scott is not pilfering government stores from the army commissary for him at present. Someone is paying attention to the quartermaster accounts! M.) 7. War Cries went out to 3rd US Artillery and USS Monadnock. PVT Aime and SM2 Hanam are the middlemen distributors. As usual, I am unsure how much of that nickel is their "cut" per issue. Whatever it was, Milsaps had to agree. Otherwise the rags would never reach the units since he was PNG. 8. The Astor battery was withdrawn. Too many hoity toities were getting sick and they wanted to go home. The M1892 3 inch/25s were too much gun for these "rich boys" anyway, so the 3rd Arty was happy to trade up for top of the line field guns when the New York horsey set sailed home. 9. That gate the cockroach had hired the Filipino craftsman to build for him was a consequence of the rising Manila crime rate. This may have been the introduction of the second story man as a professional to Manila.10. Headcount 10, NSA 10, 0% ssuccess. Things are back to normal.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Thursday 12-15-981. You read this account and it is like a totally different situation around Blockhouse 12 (See Map) with the Tobacco Thieves and the Americans located up north around the Manila train station and the Tondo with the train bandits and the cockroach seeing little or no activity with the Filipino national liberation troops at all. 2. It is significant that the picket line out in front of Blockhouse 12 was overwhelmed. Luna is clearly more on the ball than his American counterpart. That American general is ARTHUR MACARTHUR. And that should shock you. Clearly GEN MacArthur is not having a good December. He is supposed to be the best of the Americans. As we see from what we have read of the last week of diary entrees, 1st Brigade is in a state of confusion. The fact that Welch has to run a recon to figure out what is front of the Americans THIS LATE is an alarm bell. 3. From the Filipino national liberation side, the fact that Welch can run this recon at all and return with a good tactical overlay, shows us that Luna's troops have poor area control and operational security behind their own front. This means the Americans can find the gaps which exist, patrol into those gaps and that means when the Americans move out beyond their own front, they will know which axes are to be exploited. The Americans are the professionals and while Luna is talented and his troops are patriotic... professionalism matters tactically and operationally. ====================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Thursday, Dec. 15th, 18984. T he target fixation of the Americans on the Filipino national liberationists to their front, when they have a crisis brewing outside San Domingo Gate may appear kind of ridiculous, but there is a logic. The situation, as the cockroach describes (unknowingly) in his diary entry shows that the war criminal, GEN Otis, prepares to attack what he perceives to be "the main Indian encampment" which is the traditional American army solution when dealing with "Indians". Break up the co9ncentrations, scatter the tribes and then hunt the scattered bands down one by one and put them on reservations. Rinse and repeat. This is how a very tiny American army defeated a massively numerically superior Native American warrior base. The racism and the lack of respect the war criminal, Otis, shows toward the Filipino people is a result of his career fighting Native Americans. He cannot conceive that the Filipino Katipunan generals, Luna and Roman, actually have a rather good plan to defeat the Americans, that should have worked. Over the nest 3 months we will see how it came apart, basically because these 1898 Americans were prepared to learn and adapt quickly and adopt a ruthlessness that would make a Spaniard blanche. It is no accident that the war criminal, GEN Otis, tells his artillery units, that he expects them to be his main instrument of decision. 5. The 1st Nebraska Volunteer gunpowder thieves executed a successful raid. It is hard to use artillery without black powder. The Katipunan had captured about 40 Spanish field guns of assorted types and they had projectiles. What they did not have... was propellant. 6. The Astor Battery Hoity Toities are headed out. 7. Salvation Army mail from Hong Kong: I do not know why CAPT Symons praises SA work in Hong Kong. There is a full blown opium epidemic loose, the Chinese population is being savagely oppressed; smuggling, open slavery, human trafficking are rampant, the Tongs are out of control and British "administration" and law outside the European enclaves and the naval base is an utter joke. The Salvation Army mission there is even more laughable than the Milsaps fiasco in Manila. 8. The price of RACISM in dollars and cents.Further information here. You have to either be a racist of completely STUPID to ship off film to Hong Kong to be developed when you have professional Filipinos who record history and the AMERICAN NAVY with complete photographic studios right there in Manila to PROCESS that film. That is the ARS Castilla (^^^) after the Battle of Manila Bay. The photo is from the Cavite Sangley point side and is American, possibly taken from the USS Petrel. In the background is the USS Boston and the USS Baltimore at photo left, the two ships that pounded her to ruin. The third vessel in the background photo right is the USS Raleigh. 9. Why pay some British studio $ 28.00 when the cockroach could pay a Filipino photographer $7.00 US to process the Kodaks in his darkroom or the USN $10.00 for use of the Spanish one they stole when they took over the Cavite naval yard? Why be stupid? I have a singular answer: the cockroach is that stupid, that culturally ignorant, that blatant a bigot and a Know Nothing long after those fools were supposed to have gone extinct in America. 10. More War Cries distributed. Did it ever occur to the American branch of the Salvation Army to MAIL the War Cries directly to American units, without going through Milsaps? No. US Newspapers certainly figured it out, that the US Mail delivered directly to the units, but not the Salvation Army? AMAZING. 10. Headcount 8, NSA 8, 0% success.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Friday 12-16-981. Alfred Burton Welch worked hard on his report. From what I can find, his recon missions were rather critical to the restoration of the deteriorization of the American position along the southeast Manila lines. The mapping of the Katipunan lines and positions in front of Blockhouses 11-14. The Luneta is kind of important to that effort. 2. The area of interest described is Bodela Conception. That is how far Luna's people have pierced into the American perimeter. ===================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Friday, Dec. 16th, 18983. The cockroach is... 2. Entrenchments make sense. The Filipinos can see US dispositions because they have binoculars and the high ground to the east. Only to the north are the Americans able to use the ground and urban terrain to mask their own dispositions. 3. Headcount 17, NSA 17, 0% success; I will explain this in a moment, despite Milsaps' claims of success. 4. The city of Manila is hunkering down for what is coming. Citizens generally head for the cellars when they expect a siege. 5. Funny about the visit to the Owens. The cockroach is not drawing his peers, the Owens are the magnet. 6. Pacific islanders are being converted into Salvation Army devotees? I do not know about that one. Like Native American "converts" that may be a colonialist imperialist situation where the situation is convert or else. 7. About those successes... --- Frank Freeman was a judas goat and so used to encourage the newbies to "testify" and become "contributors. It is an old shill carnie trick to stampede the rubes into the desired action. --- Aime and Scott were Milsaps' stooges and cannot be counted as successes. Temple was another established agent. Actually new faces were 0% recruited. Hence 0%. --- Hines ditto.

Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Saturday, Dec. 17th, 18981. Funny thing is that Milsaps finally feels the weather break four days after we get the reports from other diarists in this same locale? 2. The Filipino sold back issues of the "The Independencia"? What is the problem with that report? The Independeencia was "free" for the pickup at this time. 3. What does Milsaps mean by "his file is complete"? 4. Notice that Milsaps has stolen documents from the Manila city jail? So, not only has Milsaps stolen documents from the NAVY, but now he pilfers the archives in American ARMY custody? 5. Salvation preaching to army troops results in the usual outcome. No success reported. 6. Milsaps reports the heightened alert has been relaxed. 7. Headcount 9, NSA 8, 12% success. 8. PVT Bertrand was "recruited" to sell War Crys. Another stooge in the field. =============================================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Saturday 12-17-989. More map-making. Notice the descrtiption of the walled village just downrange of Blockhouse 10. See Map. 10. Notice how deep into the modern city and how it is positioned into the American lines of 1898? MacArthur must have been really worried.

Diary of Chriss A. Bell Dec. 18, 18981. This may be confusing. But I read it as Chris Bell wrote about a visit to his "girlfriend's" family. Some details show what Bell's girlfriend, her mother, and her sisters do for American soldiers gives us a glimpse of what "collaboration" looked like in 1898. The language barrier seems to have not been a problem for either side and may have been a social lubricant that allowed the rougher edges on both sides to be knocked off. Bell seemed to have a sympoathetic take on the family and its old father. =============================================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Sunday 12-18-98 2. See photo. It told the story... 3. That place was pounded. ===================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Sunday, Dec. 18th, 18984. The weather was not the problem for the cockroach. He complained constantly about the weather... but I wonder if it is also a character issue with him. 5. PVT Joshua Calvin, the inside man Milsaps has at the 2nd Brigade Hospital, the stooge Scott, who Milsaps taps for fares and food and the cockroach, himself, pay a visit to the 1st Nebraska gunpowder thieves. Milsaps bursts uninvited into a religious service being held by the US army approved and supplied unit chaplain, Reverend Maile, a METHODIST minister whose family traces its ancestry back to Essex England about 1270. Instead of throwing the bums out, Reverend Maile invites the cockroach to join the hymning. Notice that Calvin and Scott were already singing with the soldiers before Milsaps, who was hunting for them, found them in that tent. 6. How did the Katipunan get BETWEEN the waterworks and the American garrison? 7. It is such little details like that one which makes the cockroach so fascinating to read. 8. It is not that the cockroach knows what he writes when he describes the scene he sees, it is that he remembered what the officers of the 1st Nebraska Volunteer gunpowder thieves told him about the ground they are going to have to take because MacArthur did not push the pickets east across the San Juan. 9. After a sloppy dinner, where the cockroach left a pile of dirty dishes... (Show me a man who does not wash up after he eats and I will show you a slovenly human being who does not know how to organize his life. Dirty dishes are a tell of a pig. M.), Milsaps and company head down to the same fort (San Antonio Abad) where Welch is putting in hard work trying to ascertain the dispositions of the Filipino national liberationists along the southern front. How did the cockroach waste everyone's time? He threw together a "service" to recruit "contributors" among the 1st North Dakota. How did it turn out? As usual, a complete bust. The soldiers were more interested in chow call, and the Filipinos were curious about the cockroach and wondered what he was about. 10. The little foray to the 14th US Infantry was to pass along messages. Tried a little preaching, Milsaps did. They told him to get lost. 11. The Binondo foray was more successful. Milsaps recruited a "contributor / sucker" out of the 1st Montana that he conned Tuesday the week before. 12. Our friend, "Devine", actually PVT Landon of K Battery, 3rd US artillery from the previous day, was blackmailed into "contributing". My guess is that Milsaps had something on the wretch. 13. The brass band episode is recorded elsewhere in American records. It was seen at the time as a noise /diversion or cover for an infiltration effort and to distract American attention from Katipunan activity to the immediate north. ===================================================== You know there is hope for almost anybody, who has the slightest smidgeon of conscience and empathy; even the cockroach; but do not hold your breath waiting for him to get something like it anytime soon. It is what it is... Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Monday, Dec. 19th, 18981. That letter at that moment could have been; "Please do not fire me!" 2. Headcount 10, NSA 10, success 0%. 3. Keefer answered his prayer. I think that would count as blasphemy in some quarters. 4. The meeting back at the Tondo residency was a complete bust. Refer to 1. 5. Considering that Dewey's fleet was very short on ammunition, his ships were in need of maintenance and so forth; "Dewey's Terrors" might not have meant what Milsaps' implied. =============================================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Monday 12-19-986. Welch continues to map the battlespace in. 7. Getting the uniform fitted for inspection is the sure sign of a staff weenie. 8. Welch found his social life in a hurry, did he not? Even had an invitation to a senorita. ===============================================================================

Diary of James J. Loughrey December 20, 18981. See Map. The American front would be split if that bridge (Isle de Convalencia) was to pass into Filipino national liberationists' hands. So from the imperialists colonialists' point of view, this (over)reaction was justified. The 1st California train bandits are the furthest north they have been to this point. =============================================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Tuesday, Dec. 20th, 18982. I have no idea of what reality the cockroach thought he lived in. 3. Scott's brother was recruited. The cockroach touched them for cab fare. 4. That weird choice of word "convicted" was not a mistake. Part of the Milsaps' world view was that there are predestined human beings. Some are saved and some are discarded. I have no personal input about this "theology" except that it conflicts with free will and chaos theory. I have observed that predeterminists are not very nice people, but I have also observed this universe as to how it actually works and I understand how this subset of people become predeterminmists, because the universe is headed for heat death and it is sort of "predetermined" that way. That does not mean that lack of empathy, charity and the willingness to help others or to actually not take mercenary advantage of one's fellow woman or man, a thing the cockroach has as qualities or did repeatedly ($$$), is something I could "accept". 5. Having fallen in withb lot of reprobates, maybe Scott's brother should have turned to a chaplain instead of these hucksters. 6. 1st Montana had 50 show up. Scott's brother was the 1 recruited. Sounds "vegetable" in the theological meaning of the non-scientific sense. (He was a plant to lure the others in. M.). The claim of "suicide" I dismiss as "homesickness". (I can lack as much charity or empathy for a "loser" as the cockroach would and did. The difference is that I still do something about it. M.) Mutare homo, not Ecce homo. This predeterminist universe does allow that to happen. Hence "free will" for as long as we last. 7. The team of Owens and Owens had 8 recruits in only 2 weeks. The cockroach had 2. (^^^) I think by the cockroach's own metrics, that the case is made? 8. The cockroach complained about the house being left unlocked and unguarded. My spouse left the lights on constantly. Instead of complainimg about it, first I installed motion detector automatic switches and second I went and got a new spouse. 9. 2nd Reserve Hospital meeting. After annoying the sick with his "august negative waves", the cockroach left with no success. One wonders why. (INTENSE SARCASM). 10. I bet paying the cab fare to make sure Hines was not AWOL (absent without leave) must have throttled the cockroach. He kept an account of how much Hines owed him. For Milsaps is about the dollars and cents and not the accounting of souls... always. ============================================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Tuesday 12-20-9811. More singing tours. Inspection was a pro-forma

Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Wednesday, Dec. 21st, 18981. Heady at the rumors, the cockroach faithfully keeps the track of who goes where through the Tondo District. Now it is the 1st California church desecrators and Flour Mill Thieves who head north. The cockroach loves to gossip and I would classify him as a high security risk. See 4. A good spy is alwayas the local barber and or the local bartendar. We know that the cockroach goes to a "barber". 2. Headcount 10, NSA 10, 0% success. 3. I think the cockroach means "Kalesa" and the "saved" corporal, Alfred Scott, is lucky. He could have been shot for desertion in time of war. Eight months with a hammer and a boulder for company and a dishonorable is strictly peacetime punishment. 4. Plagiarizes is the cockroach as usual and he still will not shave himself. They have mirrors in 1898. 5. Hans Verweibe was conned out of a fiver. 6. After 2 months work, only 6 "contributors"? And 3 of them were "contributors: (Amie, Scott and Hines) BEFORE the cockroach came to Manila? Fire him for nonperformance, San Francisco Salvation Army mission! ============================================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Wednesday 12-21-987. See Map. North is left of map. 8. The skirmishing and outpost fighting is along the line from San Miguel to Sampolag. There is also trouble in the vicinity of San Domingo and Santa Ana. =============================================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Wednesday, December 21st, 18989. Notice the weird weather? The Tobacco Factory Thieves (1st Washington) are bone dry, but the (10th Pennsylvania) Train Bandits get soaked? There is less than three miles separation between them. 10. Asendorf has smallpox. Last time I checked it, he was under quarantine in his quarters. If he has light duty, now, then everybody who can walk and hold a rifle is needed. That is ... NOT TOO GOOD.
