The weather is fine. Our outpost detail comes in at 8 a.m. and reports everything quiet on the line. Our company is getting themselves in good shape for evening regimental dress parade and grand review at 4 p.m. This is to take place at Malate about four miles from our quarters. We have fresh meat and in the evening we get some more mail. Some of us are receiving packages sent from home. In the evening a good many of us went to the YMCA tent where a Methodist missionary is holding services and a revival meeting. I sent a letter home and some papers. The same men remain on the sick list.

With G. Peterson and R.J. Moore, full belts and heavy marching order, we were mounted at 7 a.m. and marched out to Blockhouse No. 11 where we relieved the Idahos. House 30 x 30 banked to 1st loop holes, ladder to 2nd story — double walls filled with sand. A ladder leads to the lookout. The insurgent lines were only 100 yds. and we could hear them relieve guard. Aguinaldo’s hd’q’rs and flag were ¼ mi. away across the creek. Our reinforcements were ¾ mi. to rear. Could see insurgents drilling during the day anf signal smoke rose at different places. Went up and talked awhile to the inside pickets and traded cartridges. A large convent is close within our lines and the veils worn by the ladies are as fine as spider webs. And they dressed in fine silks. All night long we watched their signal lights and altogether it was a very exposed position. The guard came across creek once but guns in American hands were too much for them. We drove them back. The first real duty I have had, and I was honored in being chosen the first of the regiment. This was a hotly contested place during the fighting about Manila and I picked up a number of bullets. Was relieved at 6:30 a.m.

A feeling of gloom rested upon me today. Down on the Escolta met 2, 13th Minnesota soldiers, Glazier confessed himself backslidder. Advised him to return to Christ. He informed me that Fallon of same reg’t is also on the backtrack. Is in the hospital is convalescing from typhoid fever. Hazier & another Salvationist heard about the action of Keppels & wife going over to the volunteer & that rumor says Lieut-Col. Punter French is likely to do likewise. This news confirming my fears re the Keppel made me sad. The preparation going on in military circles lead me also to think are on the verge of a war with Aguinaldo’s insurgents. Some scout the idea, but the movements among the troops is ominous. I saw post of the Nebraska regiment passing down Calle del Rosario with their baggage en route to the trenches. News comes tonight that part of the 3d heavy artillery are packing tents & baggage for the trenches.



While passing along the drygoods bazaar on Calle del Rosario I saw a Chinese & Spanish sailor fighting. Separated them.



Received a letter from Dr. T.R. Keefer granting me permission to hold services in the 2d Reserve Hospital, Malate. Praise God.



Walked over to the Palace in Old Manila. Gave Mr. McCullough a job to print some Soldier’s Passes. He will change $5 U.S. coin for 200. I am having these printed as a temporary measure until such blanks or forms are sent here either by the U.S. or Australia. I want to secure for the Army such converts & recruits as are ready for swearing in.



After supper Bro. Frank Amie got a carimata [carromata] for me. Together we drove to the quarters of the 1st Bat. 1st Montana Vol. Inf. Bros. Hives, Berry & Lloyd prepared the dining room for our accommodation, arranged the seats & lamps. Had an audience of about 100 men who came in to hear my gramophone. Admission price 25 cents U.S. coin. Many were credited. Audience clapped repeatedly. Seemed pleased with the exhibition, & opened it with prayer. _ Visitors at No. 2. 5 about.



The steamship “Newport” has arrived – her second voyage – at Manila from California – I met Capt. Saunders on the Escolta today. He invited me to come aboard.

The weather is beautiful. The nights are nice and cold. A good breeze is going most of the time. We are issuing each company their ten days’ ration at headquarters. The Minnesota Regiment received a cablegram from their governor that said the regiment would be relieved inside of 60 days and also other volunteer regiments. This brings more joy among the boys but we still don’t take much stock in it. We have been fooled before too often. We have no fresh meat this day. The same men are on the sick book and as many on light duty.

Co. B left for outpost blockhouse No. 12; would go to my Co. if I knew where they were, but do not care to go blundering around. This is real service. Ate with A. Co which foes on the line Mon. A big chimpanzee stole all my dinner (See 4.). Went strolling in p.m., to bed at taps, 9 o’clock.

Cool, cloudy weather. Want rain bad, because my water jars are getting empty. Remained at home during the forenoon reading newspapers & arranging Spanish manuscripts from the prison & the arsenal at Cavite for my library.

A Spanish artilleryman – private – commenced taking lessons from Rev. Owens in English for which he teaches Spanish. A Chinese boy also takes lessons in English. My parlor or reading room is used for this purpose. The back room & kitchen are now used by Mr. D. Brown. The supposition being that the Owens are renting them to him & are responsible to me for half the rent of this house $17.50 mex.

Cooked my own breakfast, took dinner with Rev. & Mrs. Owens & supper with Bros. Hines & Lloyd at a Chinese restaurant in Binondo square or Plaza.

Visitors 8.

Afternoon called at the post office. Rec’d a letter from Bro. Wm Eletson & one from Lieut-Com’dr G. Blacklinger of the U.S. S. “Charleston”. Latter granting request to hold services thereon.

Went to the Palace in Old Manila & read & corrected the proof of the Soldier’s Passes being printed for me.

Gave Bros. Chester Blaney 30 San Francisco War Crys for force distribution in the 2d Battalion of the 10th Pennsylvania Vol. Inf. viz., 15, No. 569 ed. Oct. 22d; 15 No. 570 ed Oct. 29th . Also prepared bundles of Crys for our trip to the fleet & Cavite tomorrow.

On duty again with Co. The first in a long time. Out to drill at 6:55 a.m. No drill in p.m. Went to non-com school firing. Sent long letter to Topsy. Dewey landed several gatling guns today. Take bath every night. Have my blanket roll all ready to jump into in a moment’s notice in case of call to arms. We expect it every night. Went serenading in eve –4th Cavalry treated us royally. A Lieut. of Minn. asked us up to the walled city tomorrow night. We won’t do a thing. Got two nice letters from Tops. Went up to go to Minn. but was served with special duty order and sent to C Co. for a map, then took carramato [carromata] to walled city.

The weather is as fine and hot as ever. Our captain is busy working this day. Eight men are on guard, twelve men are on the hospital detail and the rest of them are building a new guardhouse. This is the fourth one we have built in this place. Captain Bierer is Officer of the Day. I worked all forenoon cutting meat but I am not feeling a bit well. I am shivering with a cold all day and am keeping myself in quarters. The same men are on the sick list and twelve are on light duty.

Time is slipping by remarkably fast. Well I would like to do more for God & souls but strength is limited. Desire to do more hospital work. Feel fogged out.

Stayed at home best part of day; the extreme heat & moist air made me not care to stir outside. Read papers, cooked breakfast, washed dishes, prayed & read more this bible – last first on the program.

Wrote 2 letters & copied them. (1) 5th weekly letter to Lt. Col. Alice Lewis, New York (2) short letter to Comd’t H. H. Booth, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, informing him that Rev. George Turner of the “Come Outers” in Ecclasia mission told me the other day that the proposed establishing a Sailor’s Home in Manila. As I broached a scheme of this character to the Comd’t I thought it best to let him know. Also told Turner so that he would not think we trespassed on this domain in case we started a home of similar character.

Went to the front office; also called at the Palace & read the revised proof of my Soldier’s Passes.

After cooking supper (did without dinner) remained at home. No soldiers came. Visitors were extremely rare today. In the reading room Mr. David Brown came in & I had a quiet conversation & prayer with him. Outcome: God blessed the effort & he professed to get his backslidings healed. Told me he preached the gospel 6 years. Fell from grace thro’ a woman was arrested & the church (Methodist) was scandalized. Left Minnesota, rushed headlong into sin and finally came to the Philippines to start life anew. During the past three or four days he has been starving, but kept quiet about it. Today the minister & his wife gave him food. Was very much disheartened I felt he would rather die than live. Brown occupies the back room & kitchen at the end of the corridor in my house – No. 2. After praying God together he claimed victory & says he will go forward courageously to live for God.

Do not remember any visitors coming in today.

Tonight the air is much cooler.

To my God I give the glory for Brown’s reclamation.

Drove to walled city to find boys, but on way home heard ’em singing –so paid my man & sung. Very tired. Recv’d a nice letter from Miss Son.

Cloudy and cool. Quite agreeable. Cooked breakfast and supper. Bro. Devine (Landon) sent me 2 good steaks as by D. Brown. I cooked one for my supper & gave the other to Rev. & Mrs. Owens. We borrow from each other frequently & occasionally divide food. They are finished for money.

Remained at home during the forenoon & wrote 2 short articles, continuation of “Incidents of Campaigning Days” for the “American Soldier.” Names or subheads. Went out 5 & came back 6, “Contrasts.” Sent them to Mr. Isaac Russell of Utah battery, the proprietor.

Ex-sergeant – Major Ackarett of Ogden Utah of Utah Artillery, has been remaining away from my meetings & attending Owens services in the Christian Commission. He called on the Owens with gifts of family supplies. I took him to task for neglecting his own work to also taking fencing lessons. Prayed for him.

After dinner went down on the Escolta. Purchased some groceries. Rec’d such a large War Cry mail that I hired a caromata. 24 cents Mex. to haul it. I have:

S.F War Crys rec’d. Assorted editions printed years ago copies 469; No. 571 edition Nov. 5th, 120 copies. Total 589.

Sent out for distribution 200 old miscellaneous War Crys (S.F.) to be distributed in G.H.K. & L batteries of the 3d artillery. Private Frank Amie took them. Also sent to the monitor “Monadnock” by Sailor H.M. Hanam, 30 copies miscellaneous Crys (S.F.) & 5 of No. 571.

Lt. Col. Wm Evans sent me in a letter dated the 3d remittance of $18 on my salary. Collected the postal note & set aside $2 for the Lord’s tenth. So this regularly.

The Astor battery is about to return home.

Rumors keep coming in of impending trouble with the insurgents.

Gave a Filipino work to make me a gate for the top landing of the front stains. P’d him $1 Mex & p’d 10 cts. Mex for 2 bamboo poles.

Rec’d several letters for various parties.

Surveyed country between b.h. 11 & 10 –ran across a large rope walk– where the making of Manila rope is all done by hand. Platted map in p.m. Went to Tenn. camp in eve, stopped at 6th Art. on the way and then along the Luneta to the walled city. The Luneta is the ruins of the most famous drive and promenade in the world. Hundreds of carriages were lined up along the walks and there was talking, singing and laughing everywhere. Many Spanish ladies, wearing the finest silks –and hair in great puffs and rolls– Spanish prisoners –natives, and everywhere the U.S.V’s and regulars, in white. Several bands were playing and we gave them a few songs. Thro’ the walls, passed the palace to 233rd U.S. Inf., thro’ the walls again along the park to the 2nd Batt 1st Cal. where we sang anf were entertained like princes. Barracks close to the Ponta [Puente] Espanol. Then to the 1st & 3rd Cal. Batt’s and in the “Quartel del Forum,” then home via “Calle Real Concepcion” and “Calle de M[arques de] Comillas” to our own “Calle de Canonico.” When we reached to 4th Cav. we heard 3 shots and thinking our companies might be called out, ran. When halted by the sentry at the gate, we learned Co. D had been out ½ hour, for we were late on our pass. Took haversack and belt & canteen & rifle out caught up with Co. D at bridge on “Calle d Nazalledo” where they were halted awaiting orders. Threw out line of pickets and searched everybody who passed. Were recalled about 1.30 a.m., but kept pickets posted. Co. slept with clothes on and on arms the rest of the night. The Penn. pickets had been fired on –which was the cause of the call to arms. When the call sounded at 9.30 p.m., one man was so excited that he put his belt on over his shirt, and fell in without pantaloons.

Yesterday was exciting because of expected fight with the Filipinos; less excitement to day but not less critical. Private Amie says the Filipinos are throwing up entrenchments & fortifying themselves. Probably they mean to fight the Americans. Our picket lines are being strengthened.

Remained at home this forenoon & wrote an anecdote for the “American Soldier” & “Incidents of Campaigning Days” entitled “Struck Bottom”. Sent it to Private Isaac Russell the Editor.

Manila’s streets are not so populous of late as a few days ago. There are many more troops in the city but they are kept in their quarters ready for battle.

Captain and Mrs. Spicer called to see Rev. & Mrs. Owens this forenoon. The Captain related to me that 35 native Salvationists well dressed & speaking good English came on board his ship the “Glooscap” in November 1897 from the island of Pengalape one of the Caroline group. They bought all the bibles they could get. There are three small islands together containing a population of 800 souls.

I went to post office; no mail for me. Purchased groceries.

The Lord encouraged me with more visitors than I expected to see, considering these days of trouble & threatened bloodshed.

Cooked breakfast & supper & fasted dinner time.

Following supper led the holiness meeting in Calle No. 2. Present 15 soldiers. The Holy Ghost was present. Testimonies free. At the close Frank Freeman of the Montana’s who sought Jesus at our tent meeting in San Miguel came forward again. He is evidently sincere. God bless him. Hines told a beautiful incident re him: After meeting his comrades re him, offered drinks etc. Bore it: finally said “Boys let us pray about it”. Got on his knees. Stampede of persecution.

A backslidder Salvationist also came forward & professed to get victory in Christ Jesus – Private F. Rathmoumer of L. Battery 3d Art’y. Glory to God for the victories. The Lord won.

After meeting closed the following comrades signed the articles of war & were sworn in as soldiers up the Salvation Army: Private Clayton J. Scott D. Co. 1st North Dakota. This comrade had been a Salvationist, but left the S.A. & did the work for an evangelist.

Private Frank Amie, H. Battery 3d Reg’t Heavy Artillery was a backslider. Saved over in our meeting in Honolulu. Archer E. Temple, Hospital Corps 2d Reserve Hospital was the third. More are to follow.

Sunday. Had a very fine dinner. Christmas boxes add greatly to our bill of fare. In afternoon Jim, Carr & I called on Launacia’s folks. They live about 2 miles from Adeiano in a pretty lougi (long or tough?) district . Besclis [besides] mother father there is Herbina about Launacia are very bright and pretty. They are like all Phillipines (sic) [Filipinos] but cleaner & are brighter. Carmen does fancy work for soldiers. Mother makes chocolate. They are very hospitable. Girls are odd. Do not hesitate to brush hair, powder face before company. It was a funny call we could not speak Togae [Tagalog] or Spanish & they no English. Some of our rude remarks were startling. They served chocolate snails. Old man was sick. Palpitation of heart. Insisted on our staying. Are [am] going next week to take picture.

Serg’t Burtt and I went to 14th U.S.A. in Matate [Malate] to see Fix. Had a great feed and then went along Calle Real to Fort Matate [San Antonio Abad]. We got thro’ the lines of guards by my compass. Here is where very heavy fighting took place on Aug. 13, and above the shattered, battered ruins floats the same flag, whipped and torn by the winds, which was raised during the fight. The boy who raised it was shot thro’ the neck and killed. The old hospital behind is riddled with shot and several large shells. These trenches were filled with Sp. dead & wounded, and the bl. house 13 was burned with many wounded within. A 6 or 8 inch shell bored thro’ the wall into the magazine doing the fearful execution. I picked up several heavy gun primers and Mausers. Up to cock pit in Calle Neuva [Nueva], then we visited the 14th “house” in the grove, then back for supper. Took in the Luneta and home at 8 p.m. Several boys recv’d Xmas boxes today.

Weather cool, but my underwear was wet with perspiration because of constant rush from noon till night.

Brother Joshua Colvin of the hospital corps (an old S. F. acquaintance) dropped in upon me before breakfast. Colvin, myself & Scott, following breakfast, hired a quilez & drove four miles to the encampment of the First Nebraska Vol. Infantry at Camp Santa Mesa. Heard singing & entered a tent – just erected. Found Chaplain Maile & 17 U.S. soldiers in there including my 2 companions. The Chaplain kept them practicing hymns to the end but asked me to pray which I did. He thereupon dismissed the service & invited me to call again some other day. Distributed 20 War Crys among the boys.

Got into quilez and drove down to the stone bridge which crosses the Estero San Juan. This stream is the dividing line between the American & Filipino forces. The American telephone was just put out to the water works which supplies Manila with water, runs out the road over this bridge. On the Manila side of the bridge an American sentry stands guard, on the other side a Filipino sentry is on duty. The American sentry stopped us. We coaxed him to let us go thro’. He relented & said “All right, if the man on the other side will let you pass”.

We passed both sentries & drove by four or five houses in which are quartered Filipino troops. In a fine residence Filipino officers & ladies were dancing to music furnished by one of their bands. We stopped a few minutes then went on to the old stone church of San Juan. The Filipino soldiers would not allow us to enter. Port holes for small arms have been made thro’ the massive doors. Make a detour we finally came back to our starting point.

The ground is bad to fight over. (1st) the estuary (2) ground is rocky with stone walls here & there (3) thickets of bamboos and other tropical growths (3) thick walled concrete & stone buildings occupied by the native soldiers.

The prospects of the Filipinos laying down their arms are not promising (a) they are constructing a new barrack (b) likewise trenches (c) they posted a sentry this morning within 50 feet of our line at the bridge aforementioned, which is virtually shuts us of from our water supply.

Returned to the No. 2 by 1.30p.m. I cooked dinner for us 3. Leaving the dishes unwashed on the table after brief prayer we boarded the horse car on Calle Jolo, then changed to the Malate line. Arrived at the terminus on Calle Real about 3.45p.m. then walked out to Lucina Cable Station residence facing Fort Polverin de San Antonio Abad (the first building I entered in Manila Aug. 13th) Saw Col. Of the 1st North Dakota Vol. Inf. & requested permission to hold a service in the building, in which Co. B. is quartered. Referred me to a Lieutenant, but the latter was absent. When the Colonel drove away First Sergeant John Rousetter said he would take the responsibility on himself of saying yes. We held the service in the front entrance hall, first floor. Audience 23 soldiers & 10 Filipinos. The latter gazing thro’ the big door. Our meeting was cut short by the supper call.

The Filipino lines have closed in out here to easy striking distance of our trenches. Looks like war.

Walked back to 14th U.S. Infantry quarters. Inside called on Sam Fisher of Co. K. for Mrs. B. Wheeler of West Berkeley Cal. re Red Cross matters, also had a talk re Alonzo Johnson. Spoke to several soldiers re salvation.

Was after 6.p.m. where we reached Binondo Plaza. Entered a Chinese restaurant & took supper. I paid for the 3 of us 90 cts. Mexicans. Reaching home about 7.p.m. Found room full of U.S. soldiers waiting for us & lamps lighted. Audience 14.

Led the meeting, God present & good spirit manifest. At close I swore in Private David E. Freeman of Co. E., 1st Montana Vol. Inf. This is the man who came forward at the Montana service in the tent last Tuesday.

Distributed 10 miscellaneous War Crys this p.m. at Co. B. out in Malate.

After service I swore in Private Jeptha Landon of Battery K. 3d U.S. Heavy Artillery, Regulars. This to save remark re his assumed name of Devine – which is explained elsewhere in this diary.

Go to bed now feeling tired but with the comforting assurance that time was not allowed to run to waste. All the praise & glory be to my God. Amen.

A very peculiar sight which shows the anomalous position of affairs at present prevailing was an Insurgent brass band. When I returned with my comrades thro’ the Insurgent line, the bandsmen were passing our sentry at the time. They climbed the hill to the Nebraska camp and played for Los Americanos. This looks like good will and friendship between the two armies, but nevertheless ominous preparations are evident on both sides that do not speak of peace. I do hope war will be averted, for it would be the ruin of the Filipinos’ hopes & aspirations. War is a terrible calamity. Even if defeated the natives will harbor animosity vs. the Americans.

Don Francisco Carriedo and Manila’s First Water System

When Don Francisco Carriedo y Peredo, who made his fortune in the galleon trade died in 1743, he willed 10,000 pesos to be invested in the galleon trade till it is enough to build a water system for Manila. The will specified that the money was to be used solely for the building of Manila’s water system. The fund was kept in a an iron chest labelled Fondo de Carriedo with keys to be held by the mayor, one by the senior deputy of the chamber of commerce, and the third by the senior aldermen of the city. Carriedo’s will stipulated further that his water system should give free water to the poor, the Poor Clares, and the Franciscan nuns in perpetuity, All the other would avail of water from the Carriedo waterwoks had to pay for the construction of their water connection.

The Carriedo fund was already worth 250,000 pesos when Manila fell to the British in 1762. The British appropriated the whole amount to make up the amount they demanded as ransom. In addition, the Galleon Santissima Trinidad carrying investment for the Carriedo Fund was also taken over by the British at San Bernardino Straits. But the Galleon Filipino returning from Acapulco evaded capture by British warships by hiding at Palapag Harbor and landing there it treasure worth 1 million in coins and bullions, with 10,000 for the Carriedo Fund. A small escort then brought the treasure up the east coast of Luzon, then inland to Simon de Anda’s headquarters in Pampanga. It was from this sum of 10,000 pesos that the Carriedo Fund started anew.

The Galleon trade ended in 1812, and the Carriedo Fund seemingly was all but forgotten. But Fr. Felix Huertas sifting through 300 documents in the archives rediscovered the docunebt of Carriedo’s will in 1865. He was determined that the will be carried to successful conclusion. At that time the Carriedo fund was worth 177,834.44. The amount was insufficient. To provide more funds, a royal order was issued ordering the city of Manila to donate 100,000 pesos from the municipal funds, but the various districts refused with the stupid reason that they do not want to diminish the glory due to Carriedo. Finally, a tax levied on meat consumed in the city raised the additional money needed. The Carriedo Water system was finally completed in 1882 at a cost of 745,590 pesos.

The Carriedo water system pumped water from the Mariquina River in Santolan to El Deposito, the water reservoir lined and covered with brick in San Juan del Monte. From El Deposito, the water flow by gravity through iron pipes into 153 hydrants of Manila’s water mains. This was the water system the American found when they annexed the Philippines. The pumps had a capacity of two million gallons a day and the reservoir held 14 million gallons.


(You see the area where the Marikina river bends and loops to the east? (^^^) In 1898 the Katipunan controlled the entire flatland inside that loop. The sluice gates were in their hands. M. Turn the valves and the Americans lose the water supply to the city. In military circles, that is called an Uh oh...  M.)  

Don Francisco Carriedo’s benevolence is commemorated with a street and fountain bearing his name. The Carriedo fountain originally stood at the Nagtahan rotonda till it was removed to the Balara compound for the construction of the South Superhighway. Today, through the efforts of Mayor Fred Lim, the Carriedo Fountain stands in Plaza Sta. Cruz where it is a beautiful addition.

Can the reader recall a gift as grand in concept and as altruistic in purpose as Don Francisco Carriedo’s will for a water system for Manila?

– The Carriedo fountain was erected in 1882. Governor General Primo de Rivera inaugarated the fountain in 1882 to honor Francisco Carriedo’s contribution. The Spaniard made his fortune in the galleon. He was the captain of the galleon “Santa Familia”. The fountain was first erected in Sampaloc as an attraction in its rotunda. In 1976 it was moved to MWSS’ Balara compound. It is now in Sta. Cruz’s plaza, hopefully, its last stop. A fitting place as it is in this same locality that Padre Huerta’s Monte de Piedad started.

I came off guard at 8.10 am. only to have an immediate call to arms. The regiment formed up where we changed clothes, got ammunition, filled our canteens and marched to Paco, a distance of about three miles which we covered in about 35 minutes. The trouble was with Insurgents over possession of a bridge. It was settled by their giving way. We returned to quarters at 11.15 am.

Another day of rush, thank God. Have had to work at high pressure since coming to the Philippines but God has sustained my physical & spiritual strength.

Weather hot, my clothes are wet with perspiration. Have just returned from San Miguel. Led a service there in the tent attached to quarters of the 2d & 3d Battalions of the First Montana Vol. Inf. Audience 50. The Holy Ghost present. The Lord sealed the meeting with one soul. Corporal Alfred Eugene Scott (brother of Clayton Scott) of Co. D. 1st North Dakota volunteer Inf. Private Georgeson of Co. L. 1st Bat. 1st South Dakota Vol. Inf. dropped in to No. 2, Calle Santa Elena to spread the evening. Found me preparing to go over to the Montana troops. Came along, as we were about to board the Calle Jolo horse car Corporal Alf. Scott with a cigar in hand met us. Invited him to accompany us. Agreed. Paid our car fare. The Holy Ghost convicted him at the close. Came to the reading table & knelt down. The Lord Jesus healed his backslidings. He confessed to me that he was about to make way with himself. Soldiers followed him 2 days to watch his movements lest he commit suicide, but he gave them the slip this day & the Lord led him right into our arms with the result started already – salvation in Christ. Praise God. Clayton Scott was present. Rejoiced. Said “my prayer are answered at last”, when he saw his brother at the table.

Rev. & Mrs. Owens closed their revival at the Christian Commission tent last Sunday. They had 8 professions in 2 weeks, baptized four persons in Pasig.

Monday they rested & this afternoon went out to stay overnight with Capt. & Mrs. Geo Spicer on the “Glooscup.” Our house was left open & alone when I went to the Montanas.

Cooked breakfast & supper & took a cold dinner.

Wrote 2 letters & copied them this forenoon (1) to Lt-Col. Alice Lewis, New York, 7th weekly report (2) letter of sympathy to Mrs. Anna E. Goffin of Oakland – Husband killed by R.R Train.

About 2.45 p.m. Private Hines & I took a quilez from the Escolta to the 2d Reserve Hospital in Malate for convalescents. Arrived there about 3p.m. late. Hospital employees arrange the dining room for us & I led a meeting with an audience of 19, mostly patients. Commander Hines & A.E. Temple (latter Salvationist employed in the Hospital) assisted me. I left encouraged by this my first service although no one came forward.

Time pressed, Hines had to reach his quarters by 4p.m. or thereabouts for regimented dress parade. We secured a quilez on Calle Real, Malate & traveled against time. Arrived just us the officers were going to the barracks. The quilez then took me to No. 2, after stopping at the post office Hines paid for the quilez going out & I paid coming back – 30 cents Mexican money. – Visitor 1.

Dressed in white pant, blue coat & camp hats, the regiment formed on the Luneta for inspection by General at 8.30 –at 11 inspection of qts. Rained last night & is cool today. Inspection of qtrs postponed to 2.30. In eve serenaded Wyoming boys and were received as we always have been with great good will.
