Diary of Alberto Masoliver July 24, 18991. To be honest, I have no idea what happened to Surigao. I know the American garrison was looting, but other than that bit, zilch. The fighting will start in earnest in a couple of weeks. ================================================================================= Diary of Alfred Burton Welch July 24 – Monday 1899 2. See MAP. 3. Alright, a trip across Laguna de Bay by canoe, what could possibly go wrong for the 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves? ====================================================== Diary of William Herman Wilhelm Monday, July 24th, 18994. Drowned rat syndrome for the US 21st Infantry, with Wilhelm getting ahold of tainted food. "Eat 'manure' and die"; is an old American expression. 5. Typhoon Number 2 of 1899 seems to have followed the standard pattern for Monsoon weather in the Luzon region. See MAP. 6. Situation Normal All Flooded Up.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch July 26th Wednesday 1899See IMAGE. USS Napidan tied at pier-side. The battle described is an amphibious assault near Binan. What you must understand is that the Filipino National Liberationists, had established a solid defense belt from Bacoor across the land neck between Manila Bay to Laguna de Bay. The Americans were hung up, so GEN Lawton, remembering his American Civil War experience, outflanked the Filipino defense line and landed in the vicinity sourth of Binan and the shoreline north of Calamba. The Americans waded ashore under fire, with the gunboats firing over their heads and into the beach defenders. The Filipino national liberationists were unsupported by any artillery of their own. They were forced to withdraw to high ground west and south of the landing beaches. It was a high risk flank maneuver that was only possible because of gunboat naval support. The American way of war was there for anyone to see it. I must admit that the only Filipino generals who seemed to comprehend it, were GEN Luna, now dead, and GEN Ricarti, who Aguinaldo ignored.

I have nothing to report on the 27th, except the Americans fanned out to steal and secure the sugar cane harvests, for some reason. Diary of Alberto Masoliver July 28, 18991. See MAP. 2. The two things to take away from this diary entry are: a. the US Navy was not patrolling enough to prevent interisland communications by the Katipunan patriots. b. Aguiinaldo and his advisors were not paying attention to what unfolded in front of them. The Americans on Luzon had a general now with a plan of campaign that he intended to use to split south Luzon off from North Luzon or 2/3 of the Katipunan support. Once that split was accomplished and the southern half of Luzon was "pacified"; then the Americans would move north. ================================================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch July 28th Friday 18993. See MAP. 4. As usual, the American sightseers "liberated" whatever was not nailed down. The US 21st Infantry was better disciplined, but the US 4th Cavalry and the 1st Washington Tobacco Factory Thieves were brigands.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch July 29th Saturday 18991. See IMAGE. 2. Do not laugh, it is the ONLY gun that matches the description. It is an M1841 US field gun or something very like it. Galvanized iron giant shotgun shells or grenades *(What Americans called "canister". M.), were discharged with Remington shotgun shells (blanks) as ignition primers stuck in the vent-hole. You had to be a brave Filipino or a CRAZY American to set that cannon off with a hammer lock lanyard to discharge it! It had a nasty tendency to somersault or blow up. ====================================================== Diary of William Herman Wilhelm Saturday, July 29, 18993. It takes about 1 week of a gruel diet, to cure dysentery. During that period to repair the "good" bacteria in the gut damaged by the salmonella, BEER, (Lots of it, M.), was encouraged. If you saw a ward of American soldiers who were roaring drunk, and dropping body weight like they had spent a week of forced marches in Death Valley; you had a good idea of what disease they suffered. Hey, I did not write that American army medicine was any good, but sometimes it worked in spite of the stupid stuff the inept doctors did during this war.

More fighting around Calamba... Diary of Alfred Burton Welch July 30 -Sunday, 18991. I read that and I did not believe it. See MAP. 2. The US navy laid 30 miles, not 25 miles, across Laguna de Bay from Calamba to Taguig. 2. See MAPs. 3 If I read those maps correctly, then the Americans crossed multiple rivers to reach the Cubayao River, west of Calamba to turn the Filipino left flank and then drove the national liberationists north toward Cubayao township. 4. See IMAGE. That is the San Cristobol, which is the last river I believe the 1st Washington Tobacco Factory Thieves crossed to drive the Katipunan patriots north. ================================================================================= What were the US 22nd Infantry doing?
Diary of William R. Johnson July 30th 18995. See MAP. 6. See IMAGEs. 5. The only places in America that will come close. THAT (^^^) is New Jersey. We have more genuine swamps, (Okefenokee is the example I give below), but they are absolutely flat and FILTHY. Yes; that is an alligator.
