Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Monday, June 12th 1899

Manila, Luzon Island – Entry made in parlor of No. 2 Calle Santa Elena, Tondo

Sky is overcast with clouds almost every day. At night clears up some & sheet lightning plays around the horizon. Wealth hat. No rain. Up about 6.30 a.m. Read one chapter in Deuteronomy. Prayed. In the afternoon feeling a desire to commune with my God prayed again.

Cooked breakfast of oatmeal mush, coffee & fried ham, dinner made of soda crackers & lemonade, supper cocoa, fried ham & oatmeal mush.

Went down town this forenoon with Rev. C. Owens & mailed my War Cry copy to Lt.-Col. Wm Evans but rec’d no mail out of the office. Owens & I parted company down on th eh Escolta & I returned back to end of the street car live (Calle Jolo) then walked out to Tondo church vicinity. The street car conductor had no change so charged me no fare. A peculiar state of affairs.

Called at the house of B. Caramanzana, photographer, & paid him $4.64 for development of 2 films & printing of 24 pictures. Good work. Fell encouraged. Left him 2 more films to develop. A Montana man who looked thro’ my pictures left a note that he would like to exchange with me. Left ward for him to call & see me. Rev. Owens ordered 6 or 8 at 20 cts. each Mex.

Returned home & passed remainder of day at home. Wrote place, date etc. on back of pictures old & new; had to hunt thro’ diaries for necessary information – tedious work.

Also catalogued some books lately added to my collection. The war on the Philippines like war elsewhere, break up homes & scatter libraries, curios & collections of various sorts. Books & collections of shells are offered for sale through the public prints. This is the collector’s harvest time.

One battalion of the 2d Oregon embarked today; that is, they (the men) went aboard the steamer ________, The Oregon after all are the first of the volunteers to start homeward.

An orderly just in from Morong accosted me on the Escolta. Knew me in California. Belongs to the 1st Washington vol. Inf. Had to run the gauntlet of bullets fired by Filipino amigos when making his 25 miles horseback ride. Said Bro. Jensen of Co. L. 1st Washington Inf. is a true Christian. A party of soldiers was singing lewd songs; tried to shame Jensen. He sang & Salvation Army sang for them and they listened to him with respect. I urged the orderly to give his heart to the Lord Jesus and serve Him the same way – faithfully and fearlessly, & then whether amigos hurried him into eternity or he be permitted to live long he would be ready to meet his Lord. I am thankful to hear of Jensen’s courage for Jesus.

2. "Wealth hat" = weather hot. Milsap's penmanship; like the rest of him, was sloppy and piggish.

Do Not Forget the Lord

8 Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the Lord promised on oath to your ancestors. 2 Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. 3 He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. 4 Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years. 5 Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the Lord your God disciplines you.
6 Observe the commands of the Lord your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him. 7 For the Lord your God is bringing you into a good land—a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills; 8 a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey; 9 a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.
10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15 He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. Back in the bad old days before phones and text search, I used to keep the 3 x 5 cards file with the assigned photo number and a page and line entry for official reports as to where I would put the photo into that report. File on the fly. I was taught that system by my mentor, Lou Michaud. He pounded it into me to be systematic and organized in all things. "Sloppy work is the product of a sloppy mind." , he said. So, I see the cockroach, and you know what I think of him, reader?

The war on the Philippines like war elsewhere, break up homes & scatter libraries, curios & collections of various sorts. Books & collections of shells are offered for sale through the public prints. This is the collector’s harvest time.

What the cockroach actually meant was that this was a glorious time for him to loot, pillage, rob, pilfer and STEAL Filipino property, history, heritage and culture. It is called "cultural expropriation". It is evil enough when a nation does it, but when a private citizen participates in the "war crime" it is doubly despicable.
9. The 2nd Oregon Furniture Thieves, having been reduced to zero effectiveness, were shipped home.
10. That last paragraph is a LIE. There were no 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves at Morong this date.

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Monday, June 12th, 1899

The day has been lovely. Reports are out that hard battles are being fought on the south line. Insurgents are losing heavily. Twenty-four Americans were killed and sixty wounded. The gunboats in the bay are busy bombarding the towns and trenches along the bay.

11. See above MAP. GEN Lawton had trouble turning GEN Ricarti's defense line. For some strange reason the Filipino national liberationists under his, Ricarti's, command had not the "fadeaway disease" that seemed to have seized the Katipunan up north.

Bro’t four prisoners in, and the town of La Pas [La Paz?] is full of women who have returned. Still fighting over at Pacanaque [Parañaque] and PasPinas [Las Piñas].

2. Do you realize how limited US control after a full year of combat was in the Philippine Islands? Yet, historically I count the American "victory" in this misadventure to have happened on 5 June 1899. That is how important the assassination of GEN Luna appears to me.

Our Batt’n left in Las Pinas as reserve — heavy battle all day 2 miles south of us on the Zapote River where insurgents have magnificent line of entrenchments. Lt Avery & 13 of our men wounded — 7 killed. 21st. 9th. & 12th. also lost severely but insurgents position taken with heavy loss for them.

3. And on the southern front, the Battle of the Zapote River continues to go badly.

Cavite, Luzon Island – Entry made in parlor of No. 2 Calle Santa Elena, Manila

Hot sun shining thro’ the clouds at intervals. No rain. Breeze at times. Up early. Read a chapter in Deuteronomy then prayed & prepared for a trip to Cavite. Took 3 Salvation Army publications along. Walked leisurely down to the ferry boat without waiting for breakfast. On the bay saw the Oregonians being towed in cascoes to their steamers. They are embarking for home.

When nearing Cavite saw white smoke floating away from the U.S. war vessels. They were bombarding the Filipinos on [Bakor]bay, between Paranaque and Cavite Viejo. When I landed in Cavite straightway made for a Filipino barber shop on Calle Real & got shaved 20 cts. Mex. Then dropped in to Mr. W.B. Silver’s grocery – saloon – restaurant & called for breakfast. The Lord gave me opportunity to talk to salvation to a 10th PVT Bergyvin Pennsylvania soldier & to urge Private Joe [Bergvin] of A Battery 1st California Heavy Artillery (Vol.) to return to Christ. Bergvin is a backslider Salvationist. Smoked & drank in my presence. Silver would take no pay for the breakfast – 2 eggs fried, coffee, butter & biscuits.

Breakfast over struck down the street – Calle Real. Hearing the boom of cannon & seeing soldiers hurrying down to the water’s edge facing the [_____] bay I followed them & until 11.30 watched the American war vessels bombard until the Filipinos along the shore. The monitor Monterey (flagship for the attacking boats) cruisers Helena and gunboats “Princeton” and “Calao” did the heavy firing. One or two launches hugged the shore & peppered the coast. The bombardment was still in progress when I sped homeward on the U.S. Gov’t ferry “Leyte” at 2.30 p.m.

The "row" was started by the Filipinos firing across the bay at the U.S. arsenal which it is claimed they hit; also afterwards the gunboat “Calao”. Their cannon was silenced. While I was watching the bombardment a U.S. officer & a man dressed in white came up & requested permission to stand under the shade of my umbrella. Permission was granted.

The man in white told the officer that 40% of the American soldiers wilted last Saturday under the heat, when making the attack on the Filipinos on the South line.

Leaving the vicinity of the ice house quay & neat went to the extreme edge of the arsenal or navy yard landing. Took several Kodak snap shots of bombardment.

Dropped in at the Naval Hospital. Talked to some patients about salvation. Steward Cox received me kindly. I gave him 3 papers (S.A.) for the sick men. Time about 11.45. Cox invited me to take dinner with him. Accepted invitation. He put my cap, umbrella & camera in the office. A Chinese waiter. Cox, myself, a sailor & the sick steward I spoke to on my last visit about Jesus, present at the table. I said grace before eating. After dinner visited more patients up stairs when said good-bye. Cox invited me to come again.

Called at Regimental Headquarters of 10thPenn. & was granted free pass on Gov’t ferry boat to Manila. Called next at the General Hospital to visit Bro. Hans Verwiebe. Kneeling down in the corridor of the basement he & I prayed together. Has been sick. Bro. Andrew Smith, nurse came in. Greeting & salvation talk. Advised the comrades to try win souls to Jesus in the hospital.

Arrived in Manila about 3.15 Saw more of the bombardment as I crossed the bay. About 4.30 Rev. Owens & myself took Jolo street car to post office where the clerk handed me several S.A. publications & a letter from Ensign Ringle at Red Bluff Cal. making inquiring for a missing man.

In the Naval Hospital, Cavite, Steward Cox, imparted the news to me, that the Cubans have declared war against the United States. News came by cable. I wondered if this event would have any bearing upon my future. Another scene came back to memory. In the Library & Post office (which are one) in the little out of-the-way Arizona mining camp, near the line of old Mexico, I heard almost incredulously that the Spaniards had blown up the the “Maine” in Hawaii harbor. The crime eventually in its far-reaching influences sent me to the Philippines, where I am now.

The smell of carbolic acid was strong at No. 2 & U.S. soldiers were cleaning the ditch across the street. One case of cholera is reported in the city.

Read some papers. Cooked supper.

4. Deuteronomy 9.

iNot Because of Israel’s Righteousness

9 Hear, Israel: You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky. 2 The people are strong and tall—Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: “Who can stand up against the Anakites?” 3 But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire. He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly, as the Lord has promised you.
4 After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself, “The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is going to drive them out before you. 5 It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 6 Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.

The Golden Calf

7 Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the Lord. 8 At Horeb you aroused the Lord’s wrath so that he was angry enough to destroy you. 9 When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the Lord had made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water. 10 The Lord gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God. On them were all the commandments the Lord proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.
11 At the end of the forty days and forty nights, the Lord gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant. 12 Then the Lord told me, “Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have turned away quickly from what I commanded them and have made an idol for themselves.”
13 And the Lord said to me, “I have seen this people, and they are a stiff-necked people indeed! 14 Let me alone, so that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven. And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.”
15 So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands. 16 When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17 So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.
18 Then once again I fell prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin you had committed, doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger. 19 I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the Lord listened to me. 20 And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. 21 Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.
22 You also made the Lord angry at Taberah, at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah.
23 And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea, he said, “Go up and take possession of the land I have given you.” But you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God. You did not trust him or obey him. 24 You have been rebellious against the Lord ever since I have known you.

5. The cockroach missed the point.
6. That shambling down to the bay by the cockroach paints the strange picture of this day in the war. The 2nd Oregon Furniture Thieves are headed out. The Navy blasts away at Las Pinas, for obvious reasons.
7. A Filipino barber failed to do the right thing. So the cockroach gets shaved every other day. This day is a necessary close shave, because while body order might be explained away, a sloppy face indicates by sight what kind of pig you are. Our double agent, Miaster Silver is still in business.
8. PVT Bergyvin reminded me yet again, just how stupidly superficial the cockroach was about morality.
9. That is a lie. Silver was stiffed for the meal.
10. USS Monterey led a four ship line that cruised along the 5 fathom line. They leveled Las Pinas.
11. I have the image of a weakling, holding an umbrella, standing as a tourist watching an atrocity in the making. A naval shore bombardment is the classic imperialist war crime.
12. 40% heat casualties? Somebody should have been court martialed.
13. I had to emend the diary entry because not only is the cockroach illiterate and careless, but he was nonsensical. Also his egotism got in the way of the truth. He was a nonentity pest, but he tried to make himself the hero of every situation. Take a look at Deuteronomy 9 and see the lesson that the cockroach missed?
14. PVTs Verweibe and Smith seemed to have lacked common sense.
15. Ensign Ringle is a Salvation Army fake-rank stooge. Not NAVY.
16. The news of Cuba's declaration of war, should not have come as a surprise. The Americans had overstayed their welcome. I found it interesting as to "WHERE" the cockroach was when the USS Maine blew up. See MAP.

17. You see Tubac? There was our cockroach. You can expect him to show up in "Thunder and Lightning". he was a thief and poltroon there, too.
18. HAVANA. You can tell that the cockroach had a disordered mind in that he could not keep facts or reality straight.
19. Carbolic acid meant Cholera epidemic had already started; another gift brought to the Filipino people by the incompetent administration of the war criminal, GEN E. Otis.

Cloudy but dry during the forenoon. Afternoon a wind storm suddenly came up. Has been & is now raining from that time on.

Tired feeling this morning. Lay abed until near 7. Got up read a chapter in Deuteronomy & prayed.

Cooked breakfast of fried ham, coffee and oatmeal mush. Lunched on soda crackers & lemonade. Supper: ham, oatmeal mush and cocoa.

Went to the post office this forenoon. Rec’d 2 letters (1) Lt.-Col. Wm Evans. Commenting on my surroundings down here thinks I am the right man for the place. Whatever he may think as an afterthought, I think he sent me to the Philippines to get rid of me; didn’t want me in his division. So I have concluded from the treatment rec’d from him & his before my departure & at the time of departure. (2) Adjutant C. Wilfred Bourne. Ft. Herrick [____] Colong, Willoughly, Ohio. Bourne sent a letter to give to Private G. Spankie of the Idaho; but Spankie returned to the U.S. some time since B. writes me that Commander Booth-Tucker visited Cleveland, Ohio & exhibited much interest in me & my work. Bourne was formerly by book-keeper & cashier; What it, when I was not only editor of the War Cry, but had change of the printing department & Trade Dept. under New York, independent of the Pacific Coast Division & drawing $15 a week salary, with board & lodging free. Much extra money of mine in those days was expended to initiate the new Outsider movement in Humboldt, Mendocino, Sonoma, Lake & Del Norte countries. I pioneered every one of those countries including Trinity & part of Napa county. My salary was cut down to $9 a week. After that I had less money to spend for the general work. I have not near the heart to do such work now as I once had, because I have lost faith in the Booth tribe, who rule the Salvation Army. Until confidence lost is restored I fear my hands will be weakened.

Bourne also stated that the San Franciso War Cry has been granted a new lease of life & that Adjutant Chas O’ Donnell has returned to the Printing office. This news caused me to rejoice & to God I give thanks. B. also suggested that when I am relieved from Manila that I request a furlough & rest on his farm at Willoughby.

At dark a Filipino brought me a General Weekly Letter sent out by Com. Booth-Tucker to all leading officers.

Thru S. F. Crys also came with part of my Philippine narrative therein. The S.F. Cry gives me considerable space.

Rev. & Mrs. Owens went out on the bay to the S.S. “Indiana”.

Brought back ward that they will embark next Saturday.

This afternoon Mr. Chas E. Buchanan, Co. Battalion, 1st Montana Vol. Infantry called as per promise with a lot of photographic prints – Kodak. He traded me 17 pictures for 9 taken by me. I am anxious to secure a large assortment of war scenes. May need them in the future for literary & stereopticon efforts.

Rumors are floating around that our troops did not cover themselves with glory yesterday. One or 2 6th Art’y guns lost; number of Americans killed & wounded, some captured – 12, & several companies flying from the enemy. Such are the things whispered around. Such a strict military censorship is kept on the process that we can learn nothing adverse thro’ the newspapers. Of the Oregons & Nebraskans but few men are remaining in the Philippines. They prefer the United States.

Wrote & copied letters to (1) Private Geo. Berry, Co. H. 1st Montana vol. at Corregidor; (2) 30th Weekly letter to Lt-Col. Alice Lewis New York; (3) Adj. C. Wilfred Bourne, Willoughly, Ohio. Also minded 1 Toronto War Cry to Geo. Berry & 1 to Albert Lloyd, San Fernando E. Co. 1st Montana Lloyd.

3. Deuteronomy 10 and Hong Kong Tea are a bad combination.

Tablets Like the First Ones

10 At that time the Lord said to me, “Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones and come up to me on the mountain. Also make a wooden ark. 2 I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. Then you are to put them in the ark.”
3 So I made the ark out of acacia wood and chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I went up on the mountain with the two tablets in my hands. 4 The Lord wrote on these tablets what he had written before, the Ten Commandments he had proclaimed to you on the mountain, out of the fire, on the day of the assembly. [The] weather is fine. [Companies] A and B didn’t leave. Fifteen men are on guard and 10 are guarding at the prison hospital at San Roque. We drill one hour in the morning and have dress parade every other night. It has been lightning and thundering all day and in the evening we have one of the heaviest showers we have ever witnessed here. And, we all took a good bath on the back porch. We received some mail and I received on letter from home, the first one in about a month.

Manila, Luzon Island – Entry made in parlor of No. 2 Calle Santa Elena, Tondo

This forenoon the sun managed to peep thro’ the clouds occasionally, also in the afternoon until about 4.30 p.m.; then a thunder storm swept over the city, and a light shower cooled the atmosphere.

I have been somewhat loose in the bowels during the past 3 or 4 days, consequently feel slightly indisposed.

Up early this morning. Read a chapter in Deuteronomy. Then prayed to my gracious God from whose dear hands all the blessings of my life come.

Rev. Chas Owens & I walked over to No. 72 Plaza Leon XIII, Tondo where we had quite a chat with the Filipino photographer, B. Caramanzana. Is an intelligent progressive gentleman. Says Spanish photography is too far behind the times. Has subscribed for a New York photographer’s journal. My 2 films were finished. Paid him $2, Mex. & gave him another sharing the Tondo uprising. This he finished by 4.30 p.m. & printed 28 pictures. 20 for Owens form my negatives. His work is so good that I am well satisfied; praise the Lord.

Called at the post office. No mail. My daily “American” does not reach me daily. Has been delivered on my table lately at No. 2 with stamp cancelled in the post office & yet I inquire for mail every day almost.

Dropped in the Spanish store corner of the Escolta & Bridge of Spain & bought same cheese $35 cts. Mex. Is 80 cts. a lb. Mex. Had a talk with the Spaniard Henny Fiol. He is not a Salvationist but attended their meetings frequently in Australia-Melbourne. Invited him to call & see me next Sunday at 3.30 p.m. Promised to do so. Want to get him into closer touch with Christ & the Salvation Army if it is the Lord’s will.

By invitation took dinner with Rev. & Mrs. Owens. They expect to leave Saturday of the week. I wrote out a number of paper slips to accompany some curios & relics collected for W. E. Duncan Jr. Oroville, Butte C. Cal. Expect to send them with Owens to Lt-Col. Evans for D. Wrote & copied a letter re the same to Lt.-Col. Evans, explaining the articles, where they come from etc.

The landlady’s son [dunned] me for rent today. Replied mañana. Owens paid me $17.50 for his month’s rent. Owens brought news that the captain of the “Indiana” said Henry Fiol is employed in the “Extremena” store, Perez & Co. No. 4 Escolta, Manila.

There are 3 cholera cases in Manila. The newspapers are silent about it. Should the citizens get panicky they cannot go far as war is at their door.

While I was watching the bombardment last Tuesday quite a hand fight was in progress on shore. A number of our men here killed rounded ,12 taken prisoner, besides the Filipinos suffered severely. The Americans engaged were all regulars.

The 2d Oregon Vol. got away about noon on the 14th.

I wrote a letter to Private V. Heran, Co. F. Ist Nebraska regt, giving him spiritual advice, as I may not see him again. The Nebraskans are preparing to leave.

Did some reading in the “Officer”, S.A. magazine.

Cooked supper of cocoa, oatmeal mush, & fried ham.

There is a prospect of my big house becoming empty and lonesome pretty soon

Long-winded way to write that Canaan is not Egypt; but the lesson is that the Philippine Islands is not the United States; and what was he doing there in the first place, that evil imperialist missionary? The Filipino people were not the reason Milsaps was "preaching", which reason was money. The Filipino people most certainly were not the objectives of the cockroach's supposed "charity". He was there to pilfer, steal and loot.
9. Hypocrisy is not prayer.
10. B. Caramanzana, the cynic in me, has determined the trends and is adjusting to the new business opportunities and realities. So he peddles a line to the cockroach and the cockroach patronizes him, or should I write that B. Caramanzana gulls the cockroach? It is yet another example of how the cockroach could not read human beings.
11. No pay, no delivery; what did the cockroach expect, a free newspaper? Actually he did.

13. Bummed a meal and used the Owens to mail stuff back to the United States "on their dime". Ever the thief, the cockroach.

15. Henry Fiol was a Katipunan. I should have suspected that would be the case, when I first came across his name in this diary. Another reason, why he would be friends with a piece of expletive deleted like the cockroach, is that Milsaps cannot keep his expletive deleted gossiping moth shut. Can we say; "spy", reader?
16. Cholera epidemic as Welch noted a week ago. Only now the cockroach noticed? How dumb was he?

The day is awfully hot and B Company was ordered out at 2:30 a.m. and took with them 100 rounds of ammunition and 24 hours rations to reinforce Lawton’s Brigade across the bay at or near the crossroads. At 12 noon we (Company C) received orders to march to the crossroads which connect San Roque with Luzon on the south line. We laid there until night and went back to our barracks at Cavite the distance being 5 miles. Indeed is was a terrible march. Good many gave out from the heat.

20. I seriously question the physical condition and the officer care of men; taken by the 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits if a 10 mile hike wore them out.

Sick list. Rounded up 175 Filipino PATRIOTs^1 –and in the evening after telling they must go back and get their guns, they were marched out south to first trenches and let go. But they said that if they went back to the ins. lines, they would be beheaded, and would not go. So our men had to fire over their heads, but even then, they would not go. They tho’t they were going to be executed, and of all pitiful sights. It was awful to hear them cry and scream and pray. They said they would rather be shot by us than killed with bolos, and followed us in. So the Major let them stay, but we never go out without a rifle.

1. I am going out on a limb here to suggest that these prisoners were troops formerly loyal to GEN Luna.

Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Friday, June 16th 1899

Manila, Luzon Island – Entry made in parlor of No. 2 Calle Santa Elena, Tondo

Breaking up periods come & come and come again in my life. No. 2 Casa, has has heard the nailing of boxes today & witnessed the excitement of removal. Rev. & Mrs. Owens after several months’ residence with me have put their goods in order & tomorrow expect to go aboard the transport “Indiana” to embark for the U.S.

I purchased this bath tub for $1 U.S. coin. Breakfast time they sent me baked beans & I gave them ham.

Mrs. Owens brought me word this morning that an old Filipino man in the basement, who has been afflicted with consumption is dying. His friends wanted to send for a Catholic priest to visit the poor fellow before he died, but it was necessary to pay the priest one dollar or else he would not come, the dollar they did not have. Rev. Owens tried to persuade the relatives & friends that a priest’s presence was not necessary, but they did not see the case in that light. I gave the friends the required dollar. In a short time a carromata drove up with a Roman Catholic Filipino priest arranged in a long black gown and black cap. A Filipino servant attended him. They brought a small case, containing such things as the priest considered necessary for the rites of this church, likewise a white jacket or gown & a censer. The sick man lies on the floor (the natives all sleep in the floor) under my back staircase. Into this room the priest betook himself, mumbled prayers, bowed, crossed himself etc. etc. then climbed into the carromata & drove away, leaving the unfortunate consumptive to pass the dread portals of eternity with the shallow hope that the priests’ empty mummery would take his soul triumphantly thro’ the swellings of Jordan.

Read “Freedom” also an article or two in “The Officer” Salvation Army monthly. Prepared 6 Kodak prints for War Cry (S.F) wrote & copied a letter to Lt.-Col. Wm Evans & sent the pictures. Tied W. e. Duncan’s (Jr.) curios and relics in a package & turned the same over over to Mrs. Owens to take back to the U.S. This is the first lot.

Bro. Glunz, one of the Christian Commission boys dropped in. I offered him some Kodak pictures in place of some he gave with the understanding that we trade, but he waived his claim in that respect & took none.

Private Andrew (Bro.) Waterman, Co. H. 1st South Dakota vol. Inf. called & remained a couple or three hours. Has been in 19 “Scraps”. The Lord brought him thro’ without a scratch but a mauser bullet hole close to his hat band proves how close a missile came to his head.

Bro. W. said he was lying down behind a trench or rice dyke on one occasion. A bullet struck a piece of hard ground in front of him, glanced to one side & killed a comrade. Bro. Waterman kept faithful to Jesus. The Lord kept him. W. is all night excepting a slight attack of rheumatism. I made a bowl of lemonade for him. Before he returned to Camp Santa Mesa we prayed together. He will try to arrange a meeting in camp.

After dinner, I called at the post office. No mail. The “Daily American” failed to come.

Late in the afternoon Private (Bro.) Clayton Scott appeared. Long conversation. Loaned him 2 S.F. War Crys, to read & return. Rev. & Mrs. Owens left to put up overnight in the English Hotel. Before the departed, they, Bro. Scott & myself kneeled down in my parlor & prayed together which we expect will be the last. Scott remained later. Made him a cup of lemonade & cooked supper. After eating thereof, we prayed again.

I paid Mrs. Ysabel Wood thro’ her smallest son, $35 Mex rent for the month of June No. 2 Calle Sta. Elena.

One of the Utah battery men came over & got his little monkey. “Old Man”. This little simian has been the diversion and arrogance of this one colony for months. I miss the little chap. He is like a baby in some respects.

This morning early read a chapter in Deuteronomy & prayed.

Wrote a letter of introduction for Rev. & Mrs. Owens to Mrs. Carrie Judd Montgomery, Beulah, Cal.

4. I am sure the Owens were glad to leave and be shed of Milsaps.
5. So he bought Owens' bathtub for $1.00 USD. Will he USE it?
6. The old man died of tuberculosis. I have some observations:
a. The Roman Catholic Church in the Philippine Islands was of the corrupt Spanish imperialist model. They stole the best land, charged outrageous rents to tenants, and failed to truthfully serve the people. It is hard to equate the fee for service colonialist imperialist organization with the modern American church, but they too practiced this same sort of disservice in 1899. It is hard to find anybody of any religious strip anywhere in the so-called Christian West who was not in it for the money with the possible exceptions of the Mormons, the Methodists and the Quakers.
b. In a rare act of "charity" the cockroach paid for a priest. BUT only after he tried to get someone else to meet the obligation. The Owens tried to apply Methodist faith and ideology to ease the man's passing, but that was not what was required and they did not understand it.
c. Note that these were Tondo residents, whose houses had been burned down by US 8th Corps, specifically the 1stth Kansas Jayhawkers, the 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits and I believe the 1st Tennessee Photoshop Thieves. Such was the immediate benefits of GEN Hughes the arsonist.
7. As from yesterday, the cockroach prepared mail and loot that he intended to ship home with the Owens on their dime.
8. One con man, Milsaps of the Salvation, tried to gull another con man, Gluntz of the Christian Commission (See 6. M.), over photos. NSA. Milsaps failed.
9. PVT Waterman should have kept better company. Like unto like.
10. The devil preserved his own... if you believed in that sort of thing.
11. No pay, no newspaper. That was how that was supposed to work.
12. Clayton Scott came to see the Owens off. "Prayer" was a euphemism.
13. And that wretch still had not paid the balance for May!
14. The Utah Battery finally came back from the field and got THEIR monkey from the wretch. Apparently from their records; Milsaps had been abusing the poor little guy.. Scum of the Earth was Milsaps.

29 The Lord your God will cut off before you the nations you are about to invade and dispossess. But when you have driven them out and settled in their land, 30 and after they have been destroyed before you, be careful not to be ensnared by inquiring about their gods, saying, “How do these nations serve their gods? We will do the same.” 31 You must not worship the Lord your God in their way, because in worshiping their gods, they do all kinds of detestable things the Lord hates. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire as sacrifices to their gods.
32 See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it.

We rested all day but sent out our guards as usual. Everything is very quiet around Cavite. The gunboats are still bombarding in the evening. [Companies] A, B and C received orders to march to Cavite, San Fernando, a distance of about 10 miles. We got there safely. We stayed there all day but had no engagements. As soon as they saw us coming they retreated. A good many escaped in boats up the river. We captured over 100 rebels and sent them [to Cavite.]*

Manila, Luzon Island – Entry made in parlor of No. 2 Calle Santa Elena, Tondo

Up early this morning read a chapter in Deuteronomy then prayed to the Lord who cares for me & directs my footsteps. My trust rests upon His grace.

Cooked breakfast & partook thereof. Rev. & Mrs. Owens came in early from the English hotel to get their freight down to the wharf. A carabao cart & 3 or 4 Filipinos loaded the freight after getting it downstairs. At last the time came for the final exit. Owens turned the keys of his room over to me & I was minus a tenant. An open [_____] drawn by 2 ponies took Mrs. Owens down to the quay & Rev. Owens & I walked. Accompanied the cart.

On the way down I met Bro. Peter Shipper of the U.S. Engineer corps. States that he is keeping saved; receive hardly any War Crys now-a-days & thinks the Filipino war will not end until all the Filipinos are killed. Described the Engineer corps to be divided into several parties & keeping very busy.

Arriving on the quay below the Capt. of the Port’s office we entered Mr. Plummer’s house which is over a saloon. P. is chief ship loader or boss stevedore. Is an American, I learn & hails originally from Albany. Been on the Philippines 16 years. Two Filipino women occupy his home. One has a most beautiful face, soft & refined. Plays the piano with skill. Such a face! Not a coarse line in it.

Bro. Geo Turner of the Ecclesai mission, Chaplain Stephenson of the Idaho vols. a second Lieut. of the same regiment, the Chaplain of the 1stWashington vols. & Bros. Glunz & Jackson of the Christian Commission came down to bid the Owens adieu. While sitting in Plummer’s house I witness a most disgusting scene: an American stupefied with drink dropped over on the stone curbing across the street & commenced to puke. He made a horrible mess in front of his face, then rolled off into the street, where lying in the dirt like a dog he continued his vomiting. Two other American soldiers sat near by but did not offer to do anything. Crossing the street I tried to persuade them to help me raise the man. They felt disinclined to do anything. “It is just because of such men that the United States army is disgraced; he should be sent home; he is a disgrace.” remarked one of the soldiers. One finally helped me to raise the drunk and seat him on the curb. Looking at me through his stupid eyes the poor inebriate said partly as an inquiry & exclamation: “Salvation Army”. “Yes”.

Plummer’s launch returned from the bay about 10.15 o’clock. Owens freight was loaded thereon, then several of our party, including myself lined up in a group on the quay and Bro. Glunz Kodaked us. We shook hands with the voyagers, spoke last good-bye, they boarded the launch for the Transport “Indiana” & remainder separated. So endeth my experiences with Rev. & Mrs. Owens who figured so largely in my life history during the past seven months. I am sorry to see them go, but in the Philippines as affairs stand now, partings are frequent.

We are all Christians but there was no prayer attending the farewell. Salvationists perhaps view such matters differently that other Christians do; but I felt disappointed in that account.

Indeed the coming & going of Rev. & Mrs. Owens to & from the Philippines have been strange. Bishop Mc Cabe who is evidently a pusher on his own responsibility sent missionaries to Alaska. They prospered & the Methodist mission board winked at the irregularity & adopted the work there. Without securing that body’s sanction, he rushed that Owens into Manila on his own responsibility from the Washington Conference while having the oversight of that section.

The Mission Board refused to sanction the Bishop’s action. In the meantime the Bishop changed to another part of the field & the Owens were left to shift for themselves. At the request of the Board Bishop Jas M Thoburn of India, came out to Manila to inspect the country & report on the outlook. He made an adverse report I hear, re the Owens: A man named Proutch secured the ear of the Bishop & engineered a theme, the “Soldier’s Institute” (something equivalent to the Y.M.C.A. minus the name) with the Bishop figuring as , Proutch & wife superintendents & various prominent citizens as a “committee” I was told by Turner today that Plummer backed this enterprise with several hundred dollars & others gave liberally.

The Filipino Theater was secured for Sunday, a.m. services & Chaplain Stull of the 1st Montana vols. a Methodist put in charge. Thus, Owens was headed off & ignored. His position was humiliating & he did what was probably best to do, return to the U.S.

Owens is a liberal man. He gives systematically one-tenth of his income to the Lord. His heart is in the work. Mrs. Owens remarked several times in hearing that if a service fails to meet his expectation after returning home he cries.

Mrs. Owens is responsible for the statement that during the period going back one year from last October they spent in connection with their travels over $2000, & that their expedition to the Philippines & return to the United States will cost $1000. They rec’d from Bishop Mc Cabe their arrival in Manila $300 U.S. coin & over $350 Mex, donations in Manila, principally from sea captains, & a little from U.S. soldiers. They have sold their furniture, organ & sewing machine to raise cash.

Bro. Ges Turner & I walked together from the quay over to the Escolta. He informed me that he is now the Seaman’s missionary & gives special attention to sailors. Consul Williams, Mr. Plummer & others back him. We stopped at the Hacienda Municipal on Calle Echague to get a “Cedula Personal”. Several Filipino clerks wave in, but it took quite a while to make them understand how to fill out the blank properly. After spoiling 2 they accomplished the feat. I paid one paset – 20 cts. Mex for 2, myself & Turner. I am Number 049372 & by profession “Major Ejercito Salvacion.” The front face of the Cedula is printed in Spanish. The back reads as follows in English:

“U.S. Military Government.

This paper is a Cedula Personal, or Certificate of Identity…. From March 15, 1899 until January 1st,k 1900 all male inhabitants of the area of military occupation, excepting soldiers of the U.S. Army, are expected to be provided with such a certificate which states the name of the holder, native place, age, whether married or single, profession, residence and the number of register in which the cedula is recorded.”

Called at the post office but rec’d no mail.

Gave Bro. Turner $1.50 Mex to purchase 2 bottles lime juice from the U.S. Commissary department.

Returned home. Read “Freedom” & 2 or 3 magazine articles, “Evolution of the Spaniard”, “Taxidermy”, etc.

Private (Bro) M. L. Devine (Landrum) K. Bat’y, 3d Reg’t Heavy Art’y called. Spiritual talk, prayer together. Loaned him $5 gold of my money also rec’d for storage some of his things. In improving in health. Is in 8thWard, 1stReserve Hospital. ___ Cooked supper this evening.

Worshiping Other Gods

13 If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a sign or wonder, 2 and if the sign or wonder spoken of takes place, and the prophet says, “Let us follow other gods” (gods you have not known) “and let us worship them,” 3 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Show them no pity. Do not spare them or shield them. 9 You must certainly put them to death. Your hand must be the first in putting them to death, and then the hands of all the people. 10 Stone them to death, because they tried to turn you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 11 Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and no one among you will do such an evil thing again.
12 If you hear it said about one of the towns the Lord your God is giving you to live in 13 that troublemakers have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods you have not known), 14 then you must inquire, probe and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you, 15 you must certainly put to the sword all who live in that town. You must destroy it completely, both its people and its livestock. 16 You are to gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God. That town is to remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt, 17 and none of the condemned things are to be found in your hands. Then the Lord will turn from his fierce anger, will show you mercy, and will have compassion on you. He will increase your numbers, as he promised on oath to your ancestors— 18 because you obey the Lord your God by keeping all his commands that I am giving you today and doing what is right in his eyes.

8. Who saw the Owens off?
a. George Turner; a scoundrel.
b. Chaplain Stephenson; good Methodist, even though the 1st Idaho Potato Peelers are war criminals generally.
c. Glunz and Jackson of the Christian Commission were like the cockroach; imperialist tourists, cultural looters, and Scum of the Earth.
9. If the cockroach was actually doing his alleged job, then the drunk would not be drunk. That seems to not have registered at all with the cockroach, that he is a mission failure.
10. Partings; the good folk are getting out of a lost cause and the scum of the earth remain to plague the Filipino people with pesteiferous presence.
11. No prayer at the parting? Well, there was only so much blasphemy and hypocrisy that some good Methodists could stomach.
12. Some Methodist politics. Mission failure was the result. The Owens were almost ruined in the backwash.
13. George Turner in fact is a "snitch" or in modern parlance an "informer" or "narc", who pretends to a role as a helper but is actually a hired government agent. How can you tell, reader? Consul Williams in Manila is the American spymaster. He helps no-one without having that person on a string.

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Saturday, June 17th, 1899

At 6 p.m. we received orders to return to quarters. The march across the causeway which is 3 1/2 miles long is a march not easily forgotten. Besides these we had 6 more miles to travel. Good many had to drop out and an ambulance picked them up. Some were sent back on the boat. I was like the rest, very tired our when we arrived at 8:30 p.m. to our quarters where we had a little lunch then went to bed. I was really even too tired to sleep having much pain.

17. As I remarked yesterday, the 10th Penhnsylvania Train Bandits have been in country long enough to acclimatize to it. Something was seriously wrong in the unit if a 12 mile hike was onerous enough that it caused a fall out of ranks rate of 40%.

Fighting off fever. Co D sent out reconnoitering in a.m. & in p.m. all three Co’s went out to get some Filipino PATRIOTs located in a.m. Co. I went to Pateros. Co’s went along lake, to tree, then home, having failed to get Filipino PATRIOTS. 12 mi. tramp. Nearing the end of vol. 3 of these “memoirs” –and I hope a very small one will be sufficient for the rest of my army life.

2. The patrol was a complete bust. The "fadeaway" is plainly at work, as the fallout of GEN Luna's assassintion travels across the Katipunan movement. Loss of morale kills an army faster than the enemy can.

Diary of Chriss A. Bell June 18, 1899

The Reg was put in Hills – Lawton’s division for a trip through Mariquina battery and around lake [Laguna de Bai] tomorrow [June 2] we started in. In evening of 3 marched eight miles to Waterworks there we deployed into rice fields got supper and Dept. H Cos first experience as a company in the field. The eight mile hike we stood fairly well but you may be sure we all were ready for supper & bed.

On the 4th we were up at 3:30 breakfasted and started in the March at4:30. There were several regiments ahead of us but later in day we took lead. Crossed Maraquina [Marikina] river and started across valley when about half way across we started up valley it was here we took lead. Our scouts & a calvary scout was thrown and fired a few shots. After about an hours march and an unaccountable halt for about some time we eventually found right and started back across the width of the valley. Another halt of two hours where a 11 foot slough washed and in eve. went within a mile o fa few shots from the scouts.

Warned us the Filipino PATRIOTs [insurgents] were in front. Saw the order camp. Column right in front into line of squads and old H was deploying for our first scrap as a company and there was not a man in company but meant to go to the top of the hills if it were in him. In a few minutes came the order forward guide center H company was center so on us depended the line for advance and we all excitement & desire to make a name for the company went at it with a rush.

The first quarter of a mile was easy through rice patties that were dry and the edges low. Then we came to a swamp and as we were right in the middle of it the Filipino PATRIOTs [Filipinos] opened fire [but] their aim was poor. Just beyond the swamp was cornfield surrounded by chipped juice through which we had to go. Through it, over it, under it any way we could [,]by this time we were all tired and double timing through soft plowed ground was awful. At the quarter edge was a natural rise[,] here we doubled and commenced firing first at will, then by volley’s.

We could see but few Filipino PATRIOTs though they could see us and as we came through the field the range was good and bullets whistled all around us after firing a while we again went forward on the double time another swamp and another cornfield and boys began to drop out. was sick at stomach & puked but would rather have been shot than quit. Major Heath told me to take the wood but I refused to have the squad.

Now we struck the hills proper and forward we went double time for awhile then a up to fire a few volleys. Several times I threw up but managed to keep going until the top of the hill was reached. Left far in advance of the line, only a few men followed out. The FILIPINO PATRIOTS had left so we halted to rest.

In summarizing up we found we had one man wounded Rea is through the usual no service after this fight we were ordered to wait for the reserve & when it arrived we went back down the first hill & resumed the march. There was some 4 or 5 who could not stay with us but caught up when we camped for the night.

Next morning we started up when we camped for the night. Next morning we started up the cut one reg was rear guard [and] progress was slow [we had] no breakfast we passed through Antipolo and reached a small town called Theresa [Teresa] in morning. [We] waited for supply train to catch us & had bkfst [breakfast] about eight o’clock started on the lake and reached Morang [Morong] in afternoon after an awful march during which many of the boys were [exhausted] from heat.

Next day we boarded caecues [cascoes] & came to Manila reaching there about 10 P.M. Our stay at Manila a just few days on boat were without note. We reached Nagasaki on 19 and stayed there several days getting shore leave each day from 7:30 to 6:30. Spent all my time & money sightseeing. Left Nagasaki evening at 2:30. On morning of 24 entered the Inland sea. So was a fine trip though nothing particular to note.

[This concludes the Philippine portion of the diary, which only has one more entry, on June 24, 1899 noting the sea was smooth and the grub was good.]

5. It was a three week left hook that was supposed to bag the Katipunan troops massed at the south end of the Lingayen plain, before they could reach the hills to the east. GEN Wheaton's plan was botched in execution. Cavalry might have made it, but these were "volunteer infantry" who were not up to the 40 mile marches of their American Civil War forbears. After this fiasco, the 2nd Oregon Furniture Thieves were physically used up. They were no longer combat capable. And besides, their governor called them home. They were national guardsmen.

Out of bed before reveille sounded over in the artillery barracks – Cuartel Meisig.

Private Frank Annie, H. Battery, 3dReg’t Heavy Artillery came down on the midnight train last night & hurried around to my house at an early hour. I was in the back yard. Returning found a slip. Wanted his baggage to go aboard the Transport “Indiana”. Pulling on my coat I hastened over to Cuartel Meisig. Annie was at breakfast. Came over immediately offer eating & packed up his clothes, curios etc. in his valises, telescope etc. & employed a Filipino to help him carry them. This war has proved a God-send to him.

Formerly a Salvationist belonging to Los Angeles Cal. Corps. he backslid, had a quarrel with his wife, separated from her & his child & in a fit of despondency & spite enlisted in the U.S. Army & was assigned to Battery H. He accompanied his battery on the “Newport”. The Lord used me to hold services on the “Newport” between San Francisco & Honolulu & to deal with him personally. In the meeting led by me the night of our stay in Honolulu, Annie went to the penitent-form & the Lord healed his backsliding. From swearing & gambling A. turned to the service of God up to present date walked faithfully with his God. During the Filipino insurrection & the short Spanish war Annie proved himself a brave soldier. Capt. O’ Hara gave him an excellent discharge certifying to the same. He will act as a guard on ship-board & be mustered out in San Francisco. From there he will return home to his wife as their differences have been amicably settled. Both claims to be Christians. So the Lord has indeed blessed Annie. Before leaving he & I prayed together in my bedroom.

Cooked breakfast of ham, coffee & oatmeal mush.

My bowels at times are loose, again I have a touch of dyspepsia. My diet is not suitable, I fear, to the climate.

After breakfast got my Bible lesson & picked out songs for my Bilibid prison service. Also read a chapter I Deuteronomy. At 25 mins to 10, started out afoot for the prison. Sergeant Houser open the prison door for the prisoners. Just as my crowd was coming out the bugler sounded sick call. However, the Lord gave me an audience of 17 seamen or civilian & soldiers. The Holy Ghost used His servant & much interest was manifest. Three hands up for prayer. Two soldiers knelt down beside a bunk. The prisoners looked on with interest. The prisoner, Clayton Freeman who professed conversion May 7th, prayed aloud while I dealt with the 2 penitents. Explained the way of salvation to them; also prayed in their behalf and persuaded them to pray. After a little while both claimed to find victory thro’ the Lord Jesus Christ. Both openly testified to that effect before their companions. Glory to God.

Getting the company to join me in the Lord’s prayer at the close I dismissed the service, rejoicing because God led souls to Himself; praise be to His dear, precious name.

By request left all the song books with the prisoners for singing purposes during the absence.

Skipped lunch, because am feeling dyspeptic.

Looked thro’ some of the magazines given me by Rev. C. Owens. There is quite a pile. Read “City of the World’s Fair”, (Chicago) in “Cosmopolitan”, “Running Trains by Telegraph”, “Five Hundred Years of the Anglo-Saxon” & “Forerunners of Empire” in “Mc Clure’s Magazine” & “The Metropolitan Museum” (in “Century”).

Private (Bro.) V. Heran, Co. F. 1st Nebraska vol. Inf. called while so engaged. Laid aside my reading & commenced immediately to ply Heron with searching questions re his spiritual state. My letter reached him & the conversation was designed to supplement the letter. Heron with tears in his eyes confessed himself in a backslider state. Together we prayed, kneeling by the writing table in my front room or parlor. Both prayed the dear Lord. When he arose, H. said the Lord restored him again. To God thanksgiving was offered. It was in this room, kneeling near the same table, Sunday September 18th1898, that Heron was first saved. Since then he has seen much service & been in many fights. Now God in mercy brought him back to the same place for healing of his backslidings. God’s ways are truly marvelous. Heron expects this will prove his last visit, as the Nebraskans are packing up & may embark tomorrow on a transport. Heron passed unscathed through 21fights. In a night engagement with the Spaniards. August 2d 1898, a bomb shell exploded overhead. The concussion knocked Heron down & a fragment carried away the top of the head of comrade near by. Heron now expects to return to Nebraska, take his wagon & peddle. Has saved enough money to engage in business. Expects also to support his aged father. God bless the boy & make him a whole-souled follower of Jesus. Amen. I gave Heron a photo I took of him at the Bagbag bridge.

So the volunteers are clearing out. I have a feeling that I will be recalled to the United States.

God the Holy Ghost blessed me in my soul last night. My God is exceedingly good to me. I love Him & He loves me.

Cooked supper. Stomach still giving a little trouble.

14 You are the children of the Lord your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead, 2 for you are a people holy to the Lord your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession.
3 Do not eat any detestable thing. 4 These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, 5 the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep. 6 You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud. 7 However, of those that chew the cud or that have a divided hoof you may not eat the camel, the rabbit or the hyrax. Although they chew the cud, they do not have a divided hoof; they are ceremonially unclean for you. 8 The pig is also unclean; although it has a divided hoof, it does not chew the cud. You are not to eat their meat or touch their carcasses.

22 Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year. 23 Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the Lord your God always. 24 But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the Lord your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the Lord will choose to put his Name is so far away), 25 then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the Lord your God will choose. 26 Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice. 27 And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own.
28 At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns, 29 so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

We all slept until 8 a.m. this morning when breakfast call sounded. We are still tired and many sore feet are in evidence. I believe I ruptured myself. My privates are much swelled up. I also have a swelling of the glui under my right arm which is very painful. We spent most of the day resting. In the evening I attended Christian Endeavor meeting at headquarters which was well attended. Twelve men are on guard.

Days rushed with wonderful rapidity. – Up early; read a chapter in Deuteronomy; prayed. Interrupted while at prayer by “muchacha” – Filipino servant boy. Wanted to know if I wanted this floor cleaned. Yes. Cleaned them; ditto stair case landing & vestibule.

Cooked breakfast, minus ham. While so engaged another Filipino boy called to sell “Freedom” Bought a copy. Breakfast over over. Private Ges Bertrand Co. G. 1stSouth Dakota vols. showed up, hot & tired. Long talk, not forgetting spiritual matters. The Lord kept him saved. Expects to get his discharge in Manila, he & 3 others & want to rent room of me. All night $17.50 Mex. for the part recently occupied by Rev. & Mrs. Owens. Also offered to sell my gramophone & records for $50, U.S. coin. Bertrand left a bundle for storage with me. Together we prayed to our God. Before B departed, Rev. Rogers, Presbyterian missionary and Young Jackson, Christian Commission worker, appeared with a “Chino” & caraboa team, to take away their furniture purchased from Owens. Everything went excepting the organ belonging to Rogers. The latter inquired if I cared to rent the flat occupied by me. No.

Dinner time I left lunch untouched & fasted until supper, because of tendency to dyspepsia.

Very hot day, this.

Private (Bro.) Geo. Berry, Co. H. 1st Montana vol. Inf. unexpectedly dropped in upon me, just over from hospital on Corregidor Is. under orders for the U.S. but a short time to remain; must catch the 2.30 p.m. boat for the transport “Morgan City”. Prayed together. Berry is a lovely character; very spiritual. Wish his kind were more numerous. Is a candidate for the Canadian S.A. work. I put a number of questions to him & then filled out a form sent me by Staff Captain W. J. Turner of Spokane City, Wash. In his haste Berry forget to bring his candidate’s form & Soldier’s Pass. Latter to be signed by me. I made up a bowl of lemonade for one of my comrades.

Berry said Bro. Schermerhorn of Co. D. 2d Oregon Vols. returned with his regiment. Was getting worse – dysentery – instead of better & feared that he would never get well should he remain in the Philippines. Private (Bro.) Chester Blaney, Co. H. 10th Pennsylvania vol. is on the down grade spiritually – plays cards & exhibits evidences of smoking. Alas poor boy! Has been encouraged more than one or twice to remain true to Jesus. Men who are not determined to fight the good fight of faith will fail.

I was in a sense sorry to bid Berry adieu because such devoted souls as he are a great encouragement to me on the difficult field where I am now serving God, but for Berry the change to the temperate zone is best.

Following B’s departure I pulled on my coat & proceeded to the General (1st Reserve) Hospital Ward 8. Where I visited Private (Bro.) Devine (Landrum). Encouraged him & gave him a War Cry. Also met Private Harry Glozier, Co. L. 13th Minnesota vol. Inf. who is a backslider. His experience on that line is rich – cover much ground – is his 2d or 3d time. Professed to get in a meeting led by me in No. 2 Sept. 29th 1898. Gave him some advice & bade him adieu, as he leaves o the “Morgan City” for the United States.

From the hospital called at Bro. Geo. Turner’s home, near by. We had prayer together & a talk. Bought 2 bottles lime juice at the U.S. Commissary for me $1.50 Mex.

In front of the Hospital, a Christian – Hospital corps man named Armstrong introduced himself. Is on the sick list. Gave him my address & invited him to call. Is a Texan. Lives at Austin, Tex. A brother of his was formerly an S.A. officer.

Called at the post office. General Delivery clerk handed me several papers; “No letters”. I saw one in the pile & called his attention to it. Gave it to me. Was from Berry.

I traveled 3 times on street car without paying fare because I had no change smaller than 5 cents.

Cooked supper, ham fried, cocoa & oatmel mush.

The Year for Canceling Debts

15 At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts. 2 This is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel any loan they have made to a fellow Israelite. They shall not require payment from anyone among their own people, because the Lord’s time for canceling debts has been proclaimed. 3 You may require payment from a foreigner, but you must cancel any debt your fellow Israelite owes you. 4 However, there need be no poor people among you, for in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you, 5 if only you fully obey the Lord your God and are careful to follow all these commands I am giving you today. 6 For the Lord your God will bless you as he has promised, and you will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. 7 If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them. 8 Rather, be openhanded and freely lend them whatever they need. 9 Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought: “The seventh year, the year for canceling debts, is near,” so that you do not show ill will toward the needy among your fellow Israelites and give them nothing. They may then appeal to the Lord against you, and you will be found guilty of sin. 10 Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to. 11 There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.

Freeing Servants

12 If any of your people—Hebrew men or women—sell themselves to you and serve you six years, in the seventh year you must let them go free. 13 And when you release them, do not send them away empty-handed. 14 Supply them liberally from your flock, your threshing floor and your winepress. Give to them as the Lord your God has blessed you. 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you. That is why I give you this command today.
16 But if your servant says to you, “I do not want to leave you,” because he loves you and your family and is well off with you, 17 then take an awl and push it through his earlobe into the door, and he will become your servant for life. Do the same for your female servant.
18 Do not consider it a hardship to set your servant free, because their service to you these six years has been worth twice as much as that of a hired hand. And the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.

The Firstborn Animals

19 Set apart for the Lord your God every firstborn male of your herds and flocks. Do not put the firstborn of your cows to work, and do not shear the firstborn of your sheep. 20 Each year you and your family are to eat them in the presence of the Lord your God at the place he will choose. 21 If an animal has a defect, is lame or blind, or has any serious flaw, you must not sacrifice it to the Lord your God. 22 You are to eat it in your own towns. Both the ceremonially unclean and the clean may eat it, as if it were gazelle or deer. 23 But you must not eat the blood; pour it out on the ground like water.

5. Rest assured reader, the cockroach was in favor of his creditors cancelling his debts, but as you remember from the Owen's departure, the cockroach did not cancel the monies he claimed that the Owens owed him.
6. The Filipino youngster was offended by the pigsty he saw. Plus; it was an opportunity for the young man to squeeze some coins out of the imperialist interloper. For you see, reader, the cockroach could have cleaned up after himself.

Interpreting this...4 scalawags from the 1st South Dakota Baseball Players who cannot return to the United States because the law is after them, wanted to rent a hideout and flophouse from the cockroach. Reverend Rogers came buy and scarfed up the furniture the Owens sold him after the cockroach refused to buy it. The scalawags, specifically PVT Bertrand offered to fence the cockroach's stolen phonograph player (He, Milsaps, never paid the $30.00 balance due, so that means it is "stolen" o me. M.). The cockroach had not made up his mind about it. I wonder if that bundle Bertrand left was stolen goods?
8. Interpret fast, to mean the cockroach would not eat, because he had diarrhea. In one end and out the other.
9. PVT Berry, I kind of question, this 134 years removed,l his fitness for missionary work. After all, he knew the cockroach.
10. PVT Schermerhorn would be alright. He was going home with the 2nd Oregon Furniture Thieves and would be an ocean away from the cockroach. PVT Blaney of the 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits was in hi9s right head apparently and "normal" at last.
11. I am sure the cockroach was sorry to see PVT Berry go. Leviticus 18:22. Berry getting away from the wretch was probably the best thing that could happen to him, Berry I mean, not the wretch.
12. PVT Devine and PVT Glozier visited, the cockroach was feeling "lonely" now that so many of his "flunkies" were shipping out. Glozier was another of the "lucky ones" headed away from that "corruptor of youth".
13. Turner... what was a day without the cockroach using someone as an accomplice to STEAL from the American army?
14. Hospital orderly Armstrong just made a huge mistake. He met the cockroach.

The weather is fine but I am not a bit well. I reported at sick call and was taken off duty again. The doctor says nothing but rest will cure me. I can’t use my right arm at all having a big carbuncle right under the arm. Companies A, B, C and K went across the bay to do garrison duty while the rest of the troops are advancing. A salute was fired at noon today in honor of Coronation Day. Fifteen men are on the sick book and seven are in the hospital.

18. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits were split into two battalions, with 1 batattalion off to rear echelon behind MacArthur, while the other battalion swept into Cavite province.

One of the things, that the Spanish critically failed to do as political masters, was to establish a potable system of water for the Filipino people... hey, as evil as the American colonial administration was, they dug fresh water wells, established rainwater sumps, built irrigation and aqueduct systems, and generally spread the access to clean water throughout the Philippine Commonwealth. You know, things the Aguinaldo government "might" have done.

Forenoon cloudy with sun out at brief periods; uncomfortably warm.

In afternoon heavy black clouds rolled down from the North. Thunder lightning & light shower; same has continue til now & promises wet night.

This morning read a chapter in Deuteronomy; prayed. Then cooked breakfast. Am quite lonely in my big quarters. Think of it; one lodger occupying 8 large apartments and two kitchens!

Wrote & copied 4 letters (1) Staff Capt. W. J. Turner, Spokane Wash. re candidate Geo Berry; (2) Lt-Col. Alice Lewis, New York, 31stWeekly Letter; (3) Private Chester Blaney Co. H. 10th Penn. Vols. Corregidor Is. advising him to remain true to Christ & not do anything doubtful – ie. using Tobacco or playing cards; (4) Private Sam’l Jensen, L. Co. 1st Washington Vols. telling him for his encouragement what the orderly said about his consistency for Christ, & counselling to continue to shine for his Lord.

About 11.30 a.m. I mounted the Calle Jolo car & rode to the post office. Not having change for 5 cents the conductor gave me a free ride. Rec’d a letter at the General Delivery window from Private Geo. S. Bertrand, Co. 1st South Dakota Vols. Writes that he rec’d orders to send in his name for discharge. Will rent the rooms of me vacated by the Owens; also will buy my gramophone for $50. Good news to me. Praise God.

Met a Nebraska private on the Escolta. Invited me to visit the regimental quarters. Said the boys liked the meetings held with them at Camp Santa Mesa & would be glad to see me before returning home. Expect to embark tomorrow or the next day.

Must chronicle that Bertrand has taken a partner – a mustered out soldier – Walter Woster.

Shortly after noon in came a Filipino man bowing & smiling quite profusely. Brought me 3 Decoration Day War Crys (San Francisco) in one wrapper. Paid the man 10 cents Mex. for fetching it but wondered why the clerk did not give it me when I inquired for mail. The letter carries who take mail around to houses from the post office are volunteer; one can give them a fee or not just as one may feel inclined.

The Cry (No. 600 edition) contains one of my Filipino narratives. No. 599 editions has not arrived or reached me yet.

Read San Francisco War Cry, S.F. Examiner, London, Eng. War Cry and Manila daily “Freedom”.

Cooked supper – oatmeal mush & cocoa. Apples are a rarity. Bought 2 wretched little things. Paid 12 cents, Mex.

After supper Private Jas E. Marton, K. Battery. 3d Reg’t Heavy Artillery called to see me. Long talk of military affairs – battles, soldiers’ grievances, mustering out etc. then I turned the conversation on his personal salvation. Eyes moist. Wants to get saved but not tonight. Wife & other relatives Presbyterians. He insulted a friend for writing a religious letter to him, but promised to pray tonight.

The Passover

9 Count off seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the standing grain. 10 Then celebrate the Festival of Weeks to the Lord your God by giving a freewill offering in proportion to the blessings the Lord your God has given you. 11 And rejoice before the Lord your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, the Levites in your towns, and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows living among you. 12 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and follow carefully these decrees.

The Festival of Tabernacles

13 Celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles for seven days after you have gathered the produce of your threshing floor and your winepress. 14 Be joyful at your festival—you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levites, the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns. 15 For seven days celebrate the festival to the Lord your God at the place the Lord will choose. Worshiping Other Gods

21 Do not set up any wooden Asherah pole beside the altar you build to the Lord your God, 22 and do not erect a sacred stone, for these the Lord your God hates.

An American Plan

With the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898, the Philippines was ceded to America by Spain. The American regime brought to Dasmariñas, as it did to other parts of the country, several fundamental changes in the system of government, in language, and in educational system.[8]

In the month of February 1899, the Philippine–American War began. General Henry Ware Lawton's brigade operated south of Manila including the province of Cavite in the middle of June 1899. The Americans could not land directly at Bacoor because Zapote river was defended by the Filipino revolutionists who built trenches as tactical defenses forming three sides of an angle which made the Filipinos hardly visible. The American's 14th Infantry Battalion swam across the during the Battle of Zapote River and under the cover of military artillery, charged against the Filipinos who then retreated to the woods.[8]

Moving southward, the Americans encountered more Filipino revolutionaries in the towns of Bacoor, Imus, and Perez-Dasmariñas, and an infantry battalion narrowly escaped annihilation. News had been brought to the American camp that the Filipino soldiers had evacuated the town and that the native mayor was disposed to surrender it formally to the Americans. The battalion thus went there to take possession, but before reaching the place, the Filipino revolutionists closed in on all sides, and a heavy firefight went on for hours. The Americans were saved from destruction by a desperate bayonet charge when they were rescued by General Weaton's brigade

Warm day. About 3 p.m. or there about afternoon [now] clouds roll down from the north accompanied by thunder & lightnings & a show ensues sometimes light & sometimes otherwise.

Morning chapter in Deuteronomy & prayer. Cooked breakfast of coffee & oatmel mush. Since my stomach commenced to trouble me I have slacked up a lime juice & fried ham.

Bought & read the daily “Freedom”. During the afternoon in the missionary magazine (3) “The Gospel in All Lands” Nos. 3, 9, & 11. I read: “Part of the Concern”, “The World Need Evangelism”, “Missions as Related to the War With Spain”, “Some Facts About the Philippines”, “Mission Work Among the Malays”, “Religion in China”, “The African” magazine no. 1 read the Preface, “Africa Generally”, “Repatriation of American Negroes”. Also read several articles in the San Francisco “Examiner”.

Went to post office this a.m. about 10.30 o’ clock. The General Delivery clerk said no letter. Two p.m. or thereabouts the Filipino brought a New York letter. Did not give him a fee. I cannot understand why the letter was not given me at the windom. The letter is from Lt.-Col. Alice Lewis, dated May 12th & refers to No. 21 weekly letter written by me. Lewis letters is guarded but reading between the lines I gather that Com. & Counsel Booth-Tucker will soon be sending me farewell orders to leave the Philippines.

Rev. Rodgers, Presbyterian missionary called to see me re the Filipino servant boy who worked for Owens & I re his character etc. Invited me to call & see him.

With the prospect of impending change, I commenced to arrange my collection of Philippine land & sea shells with a view to cataloguing & packing them for shipment. Cooked supper of oatmeal mush & cocoa. While so engaged Private (Bro.) Devine (Landrum) K. Battery 3d Heavy Artillery, came in unexpectedly from the 1stReserve Hospital. Is improving in health; praise the Lord.

I felt a little weak & somewhat droopy today.

5. Weather was typical for June.
6. Ham was the worst thing for the cockroach. He should have eaten more of it.
7. Deuteronomy 17. (You are going to love this one. M.)

17 Do not sacrifice to the Lord your God an ox or a sheep that has any defect or flaw in it, for that would be detestable to him.
2 If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the Lord gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the Lord your God in violation of his covenant, 3 and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars in the sky, 4 and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, 5 take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death. 6 On the testimony of two or three witnesses a person is to be put to death, but no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness. 7 The hands of the witnesses must be the first in putting that person to death, and then the hands of all the people. You must purge the evil from among you.

Law Courts

8 If cases come before your courts that are too difficult for you to judge—whether bloodshed, lawsuits or assaults—take them to the place the Lord your God will choose. 9 Go to the Levitical priests and to the judge who is in office at that time. Inquire of them and they will give you the verdict. 10 You must act according to the decisions they give you at the place the Lord will choose. Be careful to do everything they instruct you to do. 11 Act according to whatever they teach you and the decisions they give you. Do not turn aside from what they tell you, to the right or to the left. 12 Anyone who shows contempt for the judge or for the priest who stands ministering there to the Lord your God is to be put to death. You must purge the evil from Israel. 13 All the people will hear and be afraid, and will not be contemptuous again.

Shower at time of writing – about 7.30 p.m. Sun out this forenoon & hot. Afternoon as usual a thunder shower.

Out of bed about 6.30 a.m. Read a chapter in Deuteronomy. Prayed Cooked breakfast of ham, cocoa & oatmeal mush. Coffee seems to excite my never too much & ham does not agree with my stomach, so have slacked up on the two latter. Am feeling droopy. Indisposed and run down.

Read “England Possesions in Africa” & articles in “Freedom” S. F. & New York, War Crys. Also glanced over London War Cry & 2 S. A. magazines, “The Officer” & “Local Officer”. Some of the latter today came from S. F. & New York by mail.

Paid the carrier 2 cents.

From letter I rec’d from the delivery clerk: (4) Mrs. Annie E. Goffin, 1001 Center St. Oakland Cal. answer to my letter of sympathy re the sad death of her husband, (2) Com. Booth-Tucker’s weekly letter (3) Com. B.-Tucker announcing withdrawal of Major Winant from New York H. Q. & resignation of his rank. Letter does not give details – says financial reasons. A dark omen at the present time. Winant is an American & one of the most Godly officers at the national center. (4) Dr. (Adjutant) F. Nice of Social Dept. N. York, requesting me to hunt up one Fred Wilson of the 17th U.S. Infantry.

Just before dinner – went out to Malate next to the 2d Reserve Hospital to the Nipa barracks. Wanted to see the 1st Nebraska Vols. break camp & bid Bro. Heron & others good-bye. Was too late. The troop embarked this morning. Hurried homeward & stopped in at the Cuartel Meisig of H. Battery, 3d Reg’t Heavy Artillery to bid Bro. Nevin farewell. He returns to Los Angeles Cal. on the steamer too.

Private (Bro.) Landrum called to see me this afternoon. His come back to his quarters from the hospital. Much better in health. Remained about 2 hours. We had prayer before he departed.

Following Landrum’s departure, I arranged my collection of Philippine shells 124 varieties, numbering 1,000 shells large & small. Also have 28 varieties of land shells, numbering 97. The conchological cabinet is becoming valuable.

The weather is lovely. We are doing but little drilling. H and E Companies returned today from Corregidor. We now have the whole regiment together. We also receive orders to get ready so we can go aboard the Senator. On the first of the week we were paid at noon as usual. The boys are having a good time. We have 24 men on guard and 14 men on the sick report. My carbuncle was lanced today. All is well except my testicles.

11. The 10rth Pennsylvania Train Bandits are about to be recalled. They stole the railroad and laid the technical logistic basis for the soon-to-be horrifying North Luzon Campaign and rifle hunts.

Heavy clouds hung all around the horizon today, but we had no rain. The typhoon season is near when the weather will assert itself.

Remained at home close. Felt so tired & bad yesterday evening that I thought best to recuperate today & am feeling rested & better in health, praise the dear Lord.

First thing a chapter in Deuteronomy, prayer, breakfast.

Early a wagon drove up to my door. Bro. (Private) Peter Shipper of the U.S. Engineer corpo brought me 51 copies San Francisco War Cry; 25 copies Apr. 29th’99, No. 596 & 26 copies May 6th’99. No. 597. He suggested S. F. Headquarters’ people sent them to him to same postage. Lt.-Col. Wm Evans wrote me that he did not know why I only received 3 copies. Shipper was in a hurry but I insisted that he take time to pray. Did so.

Private (Bro.) Bertrand dropped in next from Camp Santa Mesa where his company & reg’t 1st South Dakota are stationed.

Reiterated the statement of his letter that he will purchase my gramophone & with a sergeant will rent the back room.

Wants to give 2 or 3 months to study. B. does not care to have a partner in with him on the gramophone proposition lest he should insist on using the same in a saloon. Such principle in Bertrand was very gratifying to me.

Before B. said good-bye another footstep was heard ascending the stairs. Private (Bro.) W. I. Mason, Co. D. 9th U.S. Infantry. The perspiration was dripping in a stream from Mason’s chin, his clothes were dirty & ragged his revolver rusty, etc. looked as if he had just got back from the war – exactly the case. During the past 2 weeks poor Mason has “been thro’ the mill” down at Paranaque, Imus. San Francisco de Malabon & other places wading streams & swamps crowding thro’ the grass higher than his head fighting Insurrectos. [Comrades]were killed, wounded & overcome by heat & exhaustion but God kept him thro’ it all, but best the Lord kept him saved in soul. Together we knelt in prayer to remember our precious Lord.

The next visitor rode up on a handsome native poney, Private (Bro.) Clayton Scott, 1stNorth Dakota vols. orderly at the Palace. While Scott was here. Private (Bro) Devine (Landrum) K. Bat’y 3d Reg’t Heavy artillery climbed the steps painfully. The three of us: conversation various topics, affairs of Christ’s Kingdome & prayer.

Of the War Cry brought by Shipper gave 10 copies to Mason to distribute in the 9threg’t. Bertrand 4 for the South Dakota & Scott 10 for the Palace & Bro. Merritt, who has returned with a pack [____].

Scott says Merriott reports himself keeping saved.

Between animal & departure of visitors I packed & wrote locality of shells, sea & land, for future identification, overhauled storage list, read a number of magazine articles, news in “Freedom” and cooked supper.

The day Rev. & Mrs. Owens embarked for their homeward voyage to the United States, Bro. Glunz (are of the Christian Commission boys) & I discussed the time of our arrival – in the Philippine Islands. Glunz & Jackson shipped with the Third expedition. They left San Francisco before I did, but embarked on the s.s. “Newport” left the ships of the Third expedition at Honolulu & crossed the ocean alone, arriving in Manila bay a week or ten days ahead of the other vessels, so I just arrived that length of time ahead of the Christian Commission men.

11 But if out of hate someone lies in wait, assaults and kills a neighbor, and then flees to one of these cities, 12 the killer shall be sent for by the town elders, be brought back from the city, and be handed over to the avenger of blood to die. 13 Show no pity. You must purge from Israel the guilt of shedding innocent blood, so that it may go well with you.
14 Do not move your neighbor’s boundary stone set up by your predecessors in the inheritance you receive in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess.

Witnesses

15 One witness is not enough to convict anyone accused of any crime or offense they may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.
16 If a malicious witness takes the stand to accuse someone of a crime, 17 the two people involved in the dispute must stand in the presence of the Lord before the priests and the judges who are in office at the time. 18 The judges must make a thorough investigation, and if the witness proves to be a liar, giving false testimony against a fellow Israelite, 19 then do to the false witness as that witness intended to do to the other party. You must purge the evil from among you. 20 The rest of the people will hear of this and be afraid, and never again will such an evil thing be done among you. 21 Show no pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

5. Is it not good that there is a New Testament? The cockroach should have been thankful.

Slow falling rain tonight. Seems that the rainy season is upon us. All day long heavy clouds hang upon the horizon & obscure the sun. Another chapter in Deuteronomy. I am very forcibly struck with the inflexible character of God as displayed in His law given to Israel! Outside of Christ God is a consuming fire, the great & dreadful God, but in Christ the most marvelous on personation of pity, love and grace.

Prayer after a chapter in the Bible; then cooked breakfast.

Read “Freedom” for local news, Ditto articles in various magazines.

Called at the post office; rec’d 6 Toronto War Crys & an S. F. “Call”.

Dropped in a Spanish barbershop & get shaved; price 30 cts. Mex.

Bro. Geo Turner (Ecclesia Mission) called fetching fur gloves & a cap & 2 photos from Bro. (Private) Hines & E. Co. 1stMontana vols. at San Fernando Bro. Turner essayed to hold meetings but failed. Filipinos fired on our lives (lines); neat (I am unclear what the cockroach meant, I think he meant near the scheduled train departure times, which means the Filipino National Liberationists read the train schedules. M.), evening trains out of schedule time. Personnel dealing was all he could do beside distribute religion literature.

Continued arranging my shells. Am feeling better in health; praise God.

It is about 9 o’clock p.m. now, but the Utah brass band is over at the Cuartel Meisig serenading members of A. & B. batteries. Utah Light Artillery. A member returned a few minutes since from San Fernando & Malolos on the train. The men are enthusiastic & rend the night with their cheers. 19 When you lay siege to a city for a long time, fighting against it to capture it, do not destroy its trees by putting an ax to them, because you can eat their fruit. Do not cut them down. Are the trees people, that you should besiege them? 20 However, you may cut down trees that you know are not fruit trees and use them to build siege works until the city at war with you falls.

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Saturday, June 24th, 1899

It has rained all night but the day is fine. We turned in all the Krag-Jørgensen rifles and ammunition and got back our old Springfields. The clerks are busy balancing their accounts. We have fourteen men on guard in Cavite and eleven on at San Roque. In the evening we have more showers which continue all night. Fourteen men are on the sick list and four are still in the Hospital. In general, the health of the men is good.

7. The 1oth Pennsylvania Train Bandits turned in their Federal issue Krags and gathered back their Trapdoor Springfields. WHY? The reason was and is simple. Federal Arsenals are run incompetently and inefficiently. You read what I write about Goat Island and the Mark 14 torpedo? Bureaucrats do not run factories well. Hence, a precision weapon like a bolt action 1899 rifle made by some civil servant will be slow to come off the factory floor. Before the Spanish American War, there were about 29,000 American Krags made in USG Arsensals. Comes the war and the Americans need 400,000 Krags. Now there are American companies that can make such rifles. Winchester, Sharps, and Remington can do it quickly, efficiently and RAPIDIMENTE. But it takes time to tool up and in the meanwhile, because the Springfield Arsenal had screwed up the heat treats and parts fits of the five or six batches of rifles they ran from 1893 forward, rifles had to be sent to the arsenal to be reworked so they did not blow apart in a soldier's hands. You will see this same EXACT EXPLETIVE DELETED nonsense with the Springfield 1903s manufactured by Federal arsenals in WWI, which is why the American battle rifle of that war is the Pattern 1917, a totally screwed up British (badly )designed rifle which WINCHESTER had to fix from the barrel muzzle backwards for British acceptance and which the USG seized as a panic rifle when Wilson plunged us into that stupid imperialist war.

Manila, Luzon Island – Entry made in parlor of No. 2 Calle Santa Elena, Tondo

Cloudy but no rain during the forenoon; afternoon heavy rain; night closes in stormy. The atmosphere is becoming cool.

The Utah brass bandsmen across the street are preparing for home; their blasphemous tongues which sting the ear of decency will no longer be heard in this neighborhood. The swearing habit and lewd talk of the American soldiery disgraces our nation. The native women & children are learning the terrible habit. Our soldiers are no credit (to) Christianity; they are wicked in spite of Christian teachings. Poetical & prose writers are already holding up the American soldier as a model of all that is heroic & noble. Daily contact with him dispels the illusion. Extremes meet in our army. Shoulder to shoulder we find the best and worst of men, fighting for the starry flag. I have met some spending men in this army and some – dogs.

Chapter in Deuteronomy was followed by prayer. God the Holy Ghost blessed me by manifesting His presence in my soul last night. God is good to me; promise to His dear name.

I cooked breakfast of coffee and oatmeal. The same with a banana or two constituted my breakfast. Since slacking up on fried ham & “lime-juice” lemonade I feel better.

Following breakfast, got a lesson & selected 2 or 3 songs for my service, then walked down Paseo Azcarraga to Bilibid prison. A man was sent around to open prison down for as many prisoners as cared to attend. A poor specimen of a regular soldier was detailed to attend my meeting with Kragg-jorgensen, to watch presumably the prisoners. We entered the civil prison where a new batch of incarcerates greeted us. One (a new man) said he was sick & did not want to be disturbed. I did not believe his statement. He kept his tongue busy during the service & made some of the others noisy. The guard too, called time on me. Remarked that he did not want to stay there. The prisoners were too cross to listen to religious talk. Empty stomachs put them in an ugly mood; had no breakfast. In spite of disturbances I went ahead trusting the Lord to bless my efforts. Some one serious face listening to me. We encouraged because when I knelt to pray, one of last Sunday’s seekers, also knelt. At the close several prisoners repeated after me the Lord’s prayer. Closed & distributed 9 San Francisco War Crys – 3 editions. Audience 17. When I was ready to depart Serg’t Williams entered with a basket of bread & other supplies. The aching void in empty stomachs probably was filled after my exit.

High tide backed the estero’s over the street, so to avoid wading thro’ water on my way home, went around by the way of the Hotel de Oriente to Cuartel Meisig. Found even the sidewalk overflowed in front of my domicile in Calle Santa Elena.

Read several magazine articles. Had no callers.

Cooked supper of oatmeal mush and cocoa.

My thoughts often cross the ocean to the United States, I wonder continually what is going on there whether there is a struggle between the Booth-Tuckers & Chief Dismissal Officers. God keep the Salvation Army from ________ strife.

Atonement for an Unsolved Murder

Marrying a Captive Woman

10 When you go to war against your enemies and the Lord your God delivers them into your hands and you take captives, 11 if you notice among the captives a beautiful woman and are attracted to her, you may take her as your wife. 12 Bring her into your home and have her shave her head, trim her nails 13 and put aside the clothes she was wearing when captured. After she has lived in your house and mourned her father and mother for a full month, then you may go to her and be her husband and she shall be your wife. 14 If you are not pleased with her, let her go wherever she wishes. You must not sell her or treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored her.

The Right of the Firstborn

15 If a man has two wives, and he loves one but not the other, and both bear him sons but the firstborn is the son of the wife he does not love, 16 when he wills his property to his sons, he must not give the rights of the firstborn to the son of the wife he loves in preference to his actual firstborn, the son of the wife he does not love. 17 He must acknowledge the son of his unloved wife as the firstborn by giving him a double share of all he has. That son is the first sign of his father’s strength. The right of the firstborn belongs to him.

A Rebellious Son

18 If someone has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard.” 21 Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.

Various Laws

22 If someone guilty of a capital offense is put to death and their body is exposed on a pole, 23 you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight. Be sure to bury it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse. You must not desecrate the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

7. Well... Leviticus 18:22 so NONE of it, applies to the cockroach.
8. I would have encouraged decayed undercooked ham, overripe bananas and burnt coffee for the cockroach's diet. It would have done wonders for his happy pallbearers.
9. INTENSE SARCASM => 17 present, 17 NSA, 0% success. As I read it, these cockroach visits were actually used as additional punishments for the inmates, the rock-pile not deemed harsh enough by the guards for some of those reprobates.

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Sunday, June 25th, 1899

The morning is nice and clear. I am still off duty. I went to Manila and bought a little thing I intend to take home. Had a splendid time and a good dinner at the Spanish Hotel. Returned on 4:30 boat. There were services held at quarters in the morning and evening. All the saloons are kept open on Sundays at Cavite while in Manila most all the stores and saloons are kept closed. As Taps is sounded, it is raining very heavily.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch June 26th-99

At 10.30 a.m. Co’s D & H started out along the lake and marched until we struck an ins. outpost. I was thrown forward with 1st squad and we soon had them on the run along the lake road to Muntinlupe [Muntinlupa]. When I reported back to the Maj. the 4th Cav of Troop I was there. They threw out and advanced with us, and went on past the ruins of Mar. 19th & 20th. We got a number of prisoners, but could not bother, so let ’em go. We, the advance, run up against a good river. The ins. were on the opposite bank, in trenches. The 1st Lieut of Cav said, “at ’em boys,” and we started, but only one trooper and Pri. Witghtman & I reached the other side –and lo! the Filipino PATRIOTS were on the run. Trenches ten ft. & art. proof. We burnt the barracks and the rebs formed 600 yds. away and W. and I went at them and they run. Reckless in us. Watch tower 60 ft high. Cav. forded & went on & we swum back & reported to Co at Del Cupon. Lagune [Laguna] de Bay was busy with cannon and rapidos. Two troops dismounted from cascos and while they fought Co’s D & H laid back in reserve. Filipino PATRIOTS retreated leaving dead & wounded and great quantities of provisions and a large herd of horses. Cav lost one man. Started home at 6 p.m. –dark in woods, but made good time, reached barracks at 9. A march of at least 20 miles. Cav camped on trail. Some Amigos shot on us on way home. Fishers at work on lake. Goodbye Book –Adios!

2. Honestly, GEN Wheaton should have been relieved and court-martialed for that stupidity. He sent the 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves and the 4th US Cavalry on what amounted to an out there and back to Taguig city "raid". If Ricarti could have organized a riposte on the right flank of that south march, it would have been over 400 Americans wiped out. They were "lucky".

It was actually MONDAY.

Forenoon dry but cloudy, afternoon as usual heavy clouds & a shower, but light rainfall.

Out of bed quickly following reveille over in the Cuartel Meisig. Two chapters in Deuteronomy and prayer; then cooked breakfast of coffee fried ham and oatmeal mush.

Discovered my head to be alive with a tiny white insect barely discernible to the naked eye. These mites multiplied into myriads & were crawling over and into everything on my table when I keep my food and eat. Gave my food & table a general overhauling. Part of the ham I discarded & scalded the remainder, washed the dishes etc. Clean or unclean they were alive. Put the table in the hot sun & washed the surface with petroleum and water.

After cleaning up went down town to the post office. Rec’d nothing. In the afternoon the Filipino carrier brought me a letter from W. J. Mc Alonan, Assistant Foreign Secretary, London, enclosing one from L. B. Armstrong, Barcelona, Spain (date May 18th ’99) stating that but one of my letter reached him. Is suspicious of priests, etc. Inquires the reason, which I am unable to answer.

I met Private A. M. Walcott of the 1st Colorado Inf. lately stenographer for Gen’l Mac Arthur. Have come in to help close up regimental affairs preparatory to returning home, or rather San Francisco & then back to Honolulu where he enlisted. Was a teacher on the island when the war broke out. Is a bright young man. W. accompanied me to No. 2 & remained a couple of hours. Gave him a Kodak picture of himself amid the ruins of Aguinaldo’s palace taken by me at Malolos. I brought the bamboo the table out in the sitting room & prepared him a bunch of mangoes and lemonade.

Walcott brought tidings that the Montana’s will be down in a couple or 3 days & remain 2 or 3 weeks in town then go into the trenches to do light work. The town of Macabebe & another town friendly to Americans cannot be garrisoned by American troops because Arm. Troops are too scarce. The probability is that but little fighting will be done until the rainey season ends unless the Insurrector prove aggressive. They have been saucy of late over 800 were killed & wounded as the outcome of their late attack on San Fernando.

Private Devine (Landrum) of K. Battery 3d Heavy Artillery called next after Walcott’s departure. Devine is cooking again although very weak from his late illness. Brought me soon fresh beef cooked – a luxury indeed in my estimation nowadays. Had more than I could eat, so to keep it from spoiling gave some to the poor Filipinos down stairs. Devine & I prayed.

While cooking supper, Private (Bro.) M. H. Ackarett of Section 4, B. Battery. Utah Light Artillery dropped in to see me. Just arrived from the front 14 miles east of Malolos. A. expects to depart for home in a few days. The feed of fresh beef helped me grandly.

Stray livestock
22 If you see your fellow Israelite’s ox or sheep straying, do not ignore it but be sure to take it back to its owner. 2 If they do not live near you or if you do not know who owns it, take it home with you and keep it until they come looking for it. Then give it back. 3 Do the same if you find their donkey or cloak or anything else they have lost. Do not ignore it.
4 If you see your fellow Israelite’s donkey or ox fallen on the road, do not ignore it. Help the owner get it to its feet.

8 When you build a new house, make a parapet around your roof so that you may not bring the guilt of bloodshed on your house if someone falls from the roof.
9 Do not plant two kinds of seed in your vineyard; if you do, not only the crops you plant but also the fruit of the vineyard will be defiled.
10 Do not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together.
11 Do not wear clothes of wool and linen woven together.
12 Make tassels on the four corners of the cloak you wear.

Marriage Violations

13 If a man takes a wife and, after sleeping with her, dislikes her 14 and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity,” 15 then the young woman’s father and mother shall bring to the town elders at the gate proof that she was a virgin. 16 Her father will say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. 17 Now he has slandered her and said, ‘I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.’ But here is the proof of my daughter’s virginity.” Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, 18 and the elders shall take the man and punish him. 19 They shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given an Israelite virgin a bad name. She shall continue to be his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives.
20 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, 21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you.
22 If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel.
23 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, 24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you.
25 But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. 26 Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor, 27 for the man found the young woman out in the country, and though the betrothed woman screamed, there was no one to rescue her.
28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay her father fifty shekels[c] of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.
30 A man is not to marry his father’s wife; he must not dishonor his father’s bed.

Exclusion From the Assembly

23 No one who has been emasculated by crushing or cutting may enter the assembly of the Lord.
2 No one born of a forbidden marriage nor any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the Lord, not even in the tenth generation.
3 No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the Lord, not even in the tenth generation. 4 For they did not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim to pronounce a curse on you. 5 However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you. 6 Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them as long as you live.
7 Do not despise an Edomite, for the Edomites are related to you. Do not despise an Egyptian, because you resided as foreigners in their country. 8 The third generation of children born to them may enter the assembly of the Lord.

Uncleanness in the Camp

9 When you are encamped against your enemies, keep away from everything impure. 10 If one of your men is unclean because of a nocturnal emission, he is to go outside the camp and stay there. 11 But as evening approaches he is to wash himself, and at sunset he may return to the camp.
12 Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself. 13 As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement. 14 For the Lord your God moves about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, so that he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you.

Miscellaneous Laws

15 If a slave has taken refuge with you, do not hand them over to their master. 16 Let them live among you wherever they like and in whatever town they choose. Do not oppress them.
17 No Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine prostitute. 18 You must not bring the earnings of a female prostitute or of a male prostitute[h] into the house of the Lord your God to pay any vow, because the Lord your God detests them both.
19 Do not charge a fellow Israelite interest, whether on money or food or anything else that may earn interest. 20 You may charge a foreigner interest, but not a fellow Israelite, so that the Lord your God may bless you in everything you put your hand to in the land you are entering to possess.
21 If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the Lord your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin. 22 But if you refrain from making a vow, you will not be guilty. 23 Whatever your lips utter you must be sure to do, because you made your vow freely to the Lord your God with your own mouth.
24 If you enter your neighbor’s vineyard, you may eat all the grapes you want, but do not put any in your basket. 25 If you enter your neighbor’s grainfield, you may pick kernels with your hands, but you must not put a sickle to their standing grain.

7. Except for raping women, there is not a crime named that the cockroach was not guilty of. And speaking of mistreatment of women, did you notice the double standard applied? Women were to be stoned for offenses that a rapist could buy his way out of.
8, Now do you see why I hammer home the need to be CLEAN and orderly as to person and dwelling? LICE!
9. Jipped the mailman again.
10. PVT Alcott was a REMF and apparently a neverdowell. What he was doing as MacArthur's stenographer had more to do with bullet fever and "pull" than as to his ability to steno.
11. The 1st Montana Cattle Rustlers were shot up and rotated out. See MAP for where they got the works.

12. PVT Devine cooked stolen Filipino beef, then re stole that beef from the US Army which stole it in the first place and he gave the doubly stolen beef to the cockroach. The cockroach gave his leavings to possibly some of the Filipino people from whom the beef was originally stolen.
13. Ackerat dropped in to tell the cockroach where to get off.

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Monday, June 26th, 1899

It has rained all night but the day is nice and clear. We are all busy packing up our chests all day and getting them ready for our departure. The Utah Battery, which is going aboard the Hancock received their pay today and are also getting ready to go aboard. The Hancock and Senator will sail together. The colonel is still confined at the hospital in Corregidor. I went on duty today again feeling pretty good all around.

14. The Mormons and the 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits were going home. For them it was a "long" war. They had markedly different but essential early parts in establishing the underpinnings of what started as a perilous imperialist misadventure. The Train Bandits got the railroad up and running, and the Mormons provided the artillery difference on more than one occasion.
