The cold war was actually a very dangerous "hot" underwater war. Lots of submariners died.

A few years ago, the USS San Francisco ran into an underwater mountain. This last 2 October 2021, the USS Connecticut collided with something. Since then, the USN investigation has concluded the USS Connecticut struck an underwater mountain in the South China Sea. The captain, the XO and the chief of the boat were relieved. So far; there are no court martials scheduled.

Skip to 7.45 forward and miss the commercial.
The British lost an F35B. The Russians are after it. This will be an armed salvage operation.

String of Pearls. Look at how the Chinese leverage their industrial power to expand their strategic footprint.

USS Albacore. And if you have never heard of Charles Momsen, then here is a brief navy file on him. Momsen is noted for: -diving bell rescue system. -escape apparatus. -automatic fail never diving controls. -several salvages of sunken submarines. -distress buoys. -fixing the Mark 14 torpedo. -inventing the "golf-ball" (cylinder) bow sonar. ========================================================================== The Europeans claimed they invented the X-tail and the sail disruptor or speed brakes? Or the whale-shaped hull? Maybe. Or maybe not? The Albacore was the US test boat for the concepts in the 1950s and 1960s. One can visit the USS Albacore in Portsmouth.

How did the DPRK get to the point where they achieved SLBM technology?
Start with the Romeo class Russia gave to China as a template in the 1960s. That is a Type XXI U-boat. 1968 China perfects its copy. This is the Type 033. The DPRK gets theirs in 1971. China gives the DPRK four boats (Project 13). Teach them how to build the subs from kits. China supplies 20 kits. The DPRK in 1991 buys 40 Romeo hulks from Russia as spare parts.
Anatoly Rustav turns traitor and offers his services to the DPRK to teach them how to build SLBMs. The man was paid through illegal arms sales. Iran was the middle man smuggler. Anatoly Rustav sends 10 colleagues to DPRK, to jumpstart the DPRK program. Meanwhile Israel pays the DPRK money to stop smuggling missiles to Israel. Russia defectors and traitors still make it to DPRK. These Russian expats from 1992 developed a clone of the SSN 26.
Iran cuts a 2.6 billion dollar Scud deal to sell missiles to everbody as long as the DPRK supplies them.
1994 DPRK will get free money and 2 nuclear reactors (from the US.) as part of a further bribes. 1996 and 1997 the DPRK sells Scuds to Egypt and to Iran and earns 500 million dollars. This is a routine DPRK smuggling operation.
The USN tracks this crap and the Americans know it.
1999 the Republic of Korea spends 993 million dollars to start the two American reactors.
2003 North Korea tried to extort 500 million dollars a year as a bribe to not extort Scuds. The "offer" is refused.
Well; the DPRK continues its banditry. Upshot is that by 2016, they have a successful test from their test barge. They now have an extortion weapon, weapon proofed. By 2019 they demonstrated solid fueled submarine launched intermediate range ballistic missiles. It is equivalent to an Polaris A2.
My opinion?
The current missiles are being engineered and built by those Russian traitors and Chinese collaborators. This post might wind up in the North Korea thread.
So: the question is, who will Kim Jung Un extort with his new toys?
Note that the DPRK has concentrated its resources at Sinpo City. This is about the only good news in this whole debacle. It is a nice juicy concentrated target.
See the video for the results.

Things at sea are getting hotter these past two years. This week................. we feature America's perennial enemy, the RUSSIANS, also guest starring the Royal Navy, and the usual shenanigans with underwater spying, cable cutting and the usual bumps and scrapes. Pass the band-aids. Everybody, involved, bleeds from their mistakes as demonstrated here. Also: the USN discovers Maoist self-criticism. The British go fishing in 2020. The spy-war goes on. And the USN is filled with careerists and "me-firsters" without risk-takers and aggressive leaders.
