Type 55. The ship is equivalent to a Flight One Arleigh Burke. That still makes it very dangerous. A the cruiser that China calls a destoyer.

Predicted at the time and it has come to pass. The LCS is being retired prematurely.

Takeaways that pricked my interests. Australia is building a new east coast base. That is three possible basing sites: (See map 1.) a. Brisbane. This was famous as the USN WWII east coast base for SubSWPAC. The reasons were and are clear. b Newcastle. This is a cork bottle, with a vulnerable shallow channel, that has lack of maneuver turning room. c. Port Kembla. Tough choice. Sea access and frontage is maneuver restricted. With any port choice, there is infrastructure backset (Protected industrial area.), which raises, at least in the US, environmental impact legal issues which have to be resolved in the courts. I imagine the Australian government has the similar nightmare. The sea environment for access and a training area, is that one factor not discussed. An enemy will try to mousehole a botched base (Kings Bay, Georgia.), so one should be aware of that problem. (See Map 2.) Nuclear fission heat-lamp steam turbine propelled submarines like access to deep access routes with some shallow delousing lanes for safety and operational security reasons. Practically observed, one wants as shallow as practical patrol access lanes as possible for "delousing" enemy snoopers.

a. DPRK ship seized by the ROK navy. Maybe an infiltrator ship. Ship handed back. Criminals sent back. They should have been sunk and the seven crew members "interrogated". b. Zumwalt destroyer conversions scheduled. This will be in 2023. I would think we might want to speed that process up a bit. BHTW those HGV launchers are IRBM type maneuvering weapons similar to the Polaris A2 in reach. Bear in mind that the launch tubes are the SAME as those used on the Columbia class SSBNs c. The Russians missed with an Iskander which means they still did not and do not have the BEIDOU satellite command guidance system quite dialed in. d. Atlantic Council published Russian polling data. Two polls are suspect. Independent poll still has 58% of the Russians support the war. We have a long way to go to Sun Tzu these deluded people into "realistic expectations".
1. The young Russians are the ones who oppose the war. There is hope here. 2. The old Russians (66 or older.), almost completely support the war. 3. Note the comparison with the American "War on Terror"? There is a lesson to be learned here. 4. Russian internal news control is Stalinesque to the point that the Russian people now inhabit the same cloud cuckoo land he does.

Sweden tried to establish a nuclear-powered submarine program.
Comment: After the way Kockums screwed up the much later Gotland and Collins classes, it is probably the very good outcome that the Swedish navy never got a genuine crack at a fission heat-lamp steam turbine driven version of their Kockums version of the USS Albacore (The USS Skipjack class as eventually US built.)

Drachinifel covers the "Year of Darkness".
The summary is that the USN made some very wrong decisions. The most critical error was that one must solve the target in the weapon and not the launcher.

Professional assessment of the RFS Moskva.
We "think" four Neptunes were launched and at least one hit the RFS Moskva near a magazine holding some AA "GRUMBLE" missiles. The "drone distraction" theory is not very credible. The R-320 is a modernized HARPOON. The Neptunes came in low low low and that was all that was required.

Who needs to be court martialed?
Everybody even remotely connected with this boat. It was a very expensive series of bolos.

Zircon.
The only good news is that in the end games, the Zircon has to slow way down to "see" and it is vulnerable to conventional seduce, decoy, and spoof measures. The ONLY hard kill option available is some kind of directed energy means to heat-load and destabilize an already unstable kill-body.
Another thing to consider. Russian hardware has a now verified wartime 50% failure rate or greater. And "range tests" are never "real world" results.

The cold war was actually a very dangerous "hot" underwater war. Lots of submariners died.
Miletus12, I happen to agree with you and I think Memorial Day is a good time as any to remember just how deadly that Cold War really was, It was not just the Bubbleheads, our Airedales took some pretty heavy casualties during the Proxy Wars as did the CV crews Forrestal , Oriskany and Enterprise come to mind. The floor of the Tonkin Gulf , 19°9′5″N 107°23′5″E is littered with the remains of US Naval Aviators along with their terrible machines. I also mourn for my shipmates "in country" in the RivRons and let's us not forget the sailors called CBs. The Hospitals at Danang and Saigon and two hospital ships, Sanctuary (AH 17) and Repose (AH 16), staffed by Navy doctors, corpsmen, and 425 female members of the heroic and absolutely essential US Navy Nurse Corps. I can't say enough good things about those gals.
Finally a word of remembrance for all those who served honorably in TF 73, TF 75, TG 70.8, TF 76, TF 77, TF 78 ,TF 115,
TF 116, TF 117 and TF Clearwater up in I corps.
Almost all of us survived, some more battered than others, are all old men & women now but a few will always be remembered as young and full of life because that is the way they went. I just pray they didn't die in vain. "Attention on deck. Hand salute. Bosun mate sound 8 bells slowly."
Well, that's all I got for today. Go away now

Congress has been the chief peace-time reason that the USN has been ruined. That corruption and the other historic reason; incompetent admirals has been the reason the USN has recently been "unacceptable".
The Constellation is being built on the basis of legacy-tech. This is the earned experience of the bungled littoral combat ship system. Go with the proven and get a proven design. Italian ships ... work.

Russo-Chinese alliance is at sea and annoying us. Basically: they are trying to simulate how they will fight us.

1. Russians and Chinese operate in the Philippine Sea and in a circle around Japan. This is a Intimidex. 2. Half of the US surface warfare strength is at sea. This could be a cover for a global Fleet Problem. 3. Congress has flubbed the dub. 37 billion added to budget for EW squadrons and to save the LCS. 2.7 billion in POL. We need to go all nuclear in the navy. It is cheaper for the fleet. 1.7 billion for crew housing. Piffle. 1.1 billion for crew. 1.2 for another Burke. Some of that is black budget and that is hypersonic weapons. 4. LCS debacle continues. National Defense Adjustment Act. 5. Hypersonics defense. We have problems here. Lockheed was scuttled. Sensor fusion has a software glitch. We are three years away. C2BMC. 6. SM3 missiles are delayed because of a parts bolo. SM31A and SM6 has TQM bolos. This national inventory stands at 40 birds. Ground Based Mid Course Interceptor Missile (TMD) has more TQM problems. 7. Glide based interceptor (Raytheon) is based to intro in 2028. We will be at war by then. Orbital tracker for hyper-sonics is scheduled for next year.
