Going back to 2010 with mining asteroids I could see that being done. I'm unsure to what level we would be doing it but I feel it is doable by 2010. What about the first colonist arriving to Mars, and World War III starts forcing the American and of course their Soviet counterparts on Mars to work together.

My biggest hung-up on a world war three type thing is how do you have it happen that doesn't derail the story that the show is telling? The show is about space and the families of those who go into space. Anything Earth-based is merely to push what is going on in space. Second, you would need Mars to be set up fairly well. If this happens more or less as they land I feel they die. I simply don't see how a crew of what has to be about 30 can set up a base that can house that many without supply.
Now if we have had Mankind on Mars for a year or two and we have grown it a bit I could maybe see such a thing working out. However, that feels like recovering what has been done before. We had the two sides working together on the Moon in season one. All you would be doing here is having that done but with over a dozen people.
If I recall the soviets had five people. Given that I think one was killed that is four soviets and a few dozen people from a number of nations.

in background of Mars race, happen threatening development
in Middle East what USA abandon do no more need for Oil n USA the rising unemployment in Mining and Petrochemical industry
Episode 4 show clearly, The vice President even goes against the President, next to that common people follow wild conspiracy plots... i wonder how will react President Ellen Wilson ? special if Vice President start to blackmail with her past ! i would not surprised if Wilson will shoot the unemployed Miners to Moon literally, to work in Lunar Mines...

We will always have those who believe in wild baseless things. As for the upset people crying about the loss of jobs we all knew that a cost had to be paid for clean energy. This is one such cost. The loss of jobs in areas that use nonrenewable. I agree that she has to resolve this fast before it gets out of hand. However given the things happening in space I feel like this would be a matter better dealt with after the Mars landing.

Damn, I was in the middle of watching it and now I know the ending . If this isn't a troll I feel like that was a mistake on the show. Helios Aerospace should've won the race to Mars. This show is all about upending what is possible. What better way to do that than by having a much smaller group beat the world superpowers.

Well seems that somebody onboard Phoenix still had more loyalty to the United States than they company he was flying for, ore that is how i see it, twice he could have beaten the Americans/Soviets to Mars, twice he failed to do so. Synopsis for season 3 episode 6 "New Eden" "The astronauts move quickly to build Martian bases"

Nah he just got cold feet and pulled out just before he landed...again. He was maybe three seconds from the surface of Mars. All he had to do was man up for a second or two longer and he would've made history. That was the whole reason he joined them. To be the first man on Mars. Now he wouldn't even be on the list of people on Mars.
Nobody cares about the second person. If you're not first you don't matter. Buzz no doubt said something on the Moon in 1969 but how many people know what those words may have been? Maybe five people. The world knows the words spoken by Neil Armstrong. He'll no doubt be beating himself over not being a man and landing the ship. If he is remembered by anybody it would be for being seconds away from Mars and pulling off.
Put it another way he was leading the race only to slow down in the last 100 feet and beaten by a much slower runner. He had this dead to rights. But he didn't have the balls to see it though.

I'm curious but how would the POD in 1969 affect space opera films like Star Wars and Star Trek for this universe? I'm sure there will be a multitude of pop-culture butterflies in play here.
