What people of 1789 might have asked such a time traveller is, "Is there going to be a 2020? I heard that the world will end before then."

"Dear 1789 people. Remember, when France and its king (the irony !) helped the United States to fight a bloody war against those pesky British, and create a Republic ? "Sure." "Don't you think at times, that those french who helped you setting up your republic... could get some ideas about improving their own country using some of the lessons learned at your sides... ?" "Wait... are you telling me... oh boy... " "You have no idea. Remember also that the british cut the head of that asshole Jacques 1er in 1649 ?" "Oh boy..." "Don't you guess where this is going ?" "Are you telling me... they will fight a bloody war against that Louis XVI fellow that helped us? And dang, what role will Lafayette play ?" "Don't worry for Lafayette. He still has plenty of time to live, up to 1830 at least. But I can tell you France is up for extremely troubled times... 1871 at least. Yeah: 1789 - 1871: 82 years that will be epic.
As you correctly guessed, the French borrowed from both you and England civil war of 1649. They made their own mix and... it was pretty ugly.
Very ugly.
But things changed forever - although it took until 1871 to bury the monarchy and Bourbons, once and for all. Oh, and there is just one more name you need to know."
"Who ?"
"Napoleon."
"what kind of name is that ? did that fellow played any role in that French... how do you call that bloodfest ? civil war ? war of independance ?"
"La révolution Française."
--------------- 1789 French supporter of Louis XVI
"In 1787 we celebrated 800 years since the first Capetian king.
This year 1789 - 200 years since Henri IV, the first Bourbon king, in 1589.
And in 1800, it will be Charlemagne coronation millenia - and Capetians are related to him many ways.
All this to make you realize - do you realize the French monarchy can be traced back to Clovis (1300 years ago !) and Charlemagne (nearly 1000 years) ?
And the Capetian dystany, by itself - 802 years since 987 ! And the Bourbons - the most stable of the lot !
- Since King Henri IV death in 1610 - (that's 180 years !) we merely got Louis XIII, XIV, XV and XVI plus some regencies in-between.
Bourbon kings so far have ruled 45 years, average !
Imagine, if Louis XVI rule as long as Louis XIV (1643 - 1714, 71 years) he will be there until 1845. No, really, the french monarchy has been so strong - I'm quite sure it will last another millenia, hurray !
Long live the King !
What could possibly go wrong ? "
2020 time travellers (baffled) "How about - the Estates generals ? You know, what Louis XVI conceded at the end of last year ? "
"What, the estates general ? who cares about them ? the lasts were held in 1614 ! Ok, they indeed will be hold from the month of May. So, what ? Are you seriously telling me anybody remember the bloody thing in 2020 ?" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estates_General_of_1789_in_France"Ah, sure, dude ! You had no idea. Let me explain to you what will happen until 1871 - the next 82 years. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Revolution"My advice to you ? RUN AWAY FOR YOR LIFE !!"

That would of course depend on what you mean by biggest, as well as by empire.

What is the biggest empire in the year 2020? (If there are still empires, of course!) In land mass, the largest nations are Russia (mostly just a frozen wasteland except for the European part), Canada (same deal, save the eastern part is populated), and the USA (also has the largest military and economy). Some notable empires between yours and my time include the Napoleonic, British, Japanese, Second and Third Riech, Soviet Union, lots of others too.

I've never heard of a "Soviet Union" before. Where was it located, and how did it come to be?

I've never heard of a "Soviet Union" before. Where was it located, and how did it come to be? The Soviet Union was roughly equivalent to your Russia, and lasted from 1917-1991. It was also known as the USSR. They where founded when the Russian Czars where they overthrown because they where unhappy with the First World War. They supported Communism, which was a belief in sharing everything communally, hence the name. The pulled out of WWI, but would help Britain, France, and the US, among others, defeat the Axis Powers in WWII. After WWII, the USSR was seen as second to the US, but no other. It eventually collapsed in 1992 due to internal instability. At its peak, it controlled 1/6th of the planet Earth.

Wow How are the Second and Third Reichs different from today's Holy Roman Empire?

Wow How are the Second and Third Reichs different from today's Holy Roman Empire? The second is more federal, the third adopted Nazism and committed mass genocide.

I'm afraid I don't recognise the word 'Nazism'. What exactly is that?

The second is more federal, the third adopted Nazism and committed mass genocide. I'm afraid I don't recognise the word 'Nazism'. What exactly is that? Also, what is 'genocide'? I assume it's a new word coined sometime between 1789 and 2020, but judging by how you use it, it sounds like something unsavory.

Genocide is mass murder of many people based off of race, religion, ethnicity, etc.

I'm afraid I don't recognise the word 'Nazism'. What exactly is that? It’s a new ideology from the 1900s which involves German/Aryan nationalism, Anti-Semitic legislation, and lead to the conquering of Europe under Adolf Hitler.
