A What If- The PLAN but China spent 3%GDP on the military like every other big dog country. Probably wouldn't lead to super-duper weapons, but would probably allow for more workers to build more stuff, and man them ships.
PLAN 2021
Aviation Ships 2 Type 001 (ex Kiev) 3 Type 002 (Kuznetsov mod., 1 ex Varyag, 2 local build) 2 Type 075 LHD
Cruisers 1 Slava (s-400f, ex-Ukraina) 3 Type 55 +building
Destroyer 8 Sovemetry 2 Type 52 6 Type 51c (s-400f) 12 Type 52c 18 Type 52d
Frigate 12 Type 54 34 Type 54A 15 Type 053/H3 75 Type 056/A (Corvette)
SSK 36 Type 039/A 18 Kilo class
SSN/GN/BN 8 Victor III 8 Type 093 4 Type 093G 4 Type 094 SSBN 2 Type 094 SSGN
Thoughts? Realistic? Do Naval Aviation?

It is 1996. East Germany still exists. It is falling apart but well-armed and lashing out against opponents. Uprisings in late 1989 and early 1995 have failed to topple the regime. Soviet/Russian troops have gone home apart from a tiny force in East Berlin still. The US, UK & France have military detachments in West Berlin. Using missiles and aircraft rather than troops, East German forces clash with the Czech Republic. Prague is battered with thousands of casualties. East Germany is actively seeking nukes from inside the former USSR. Washington and London seek to remove the regime: Bonn and Paris support the cause with caution but don't join in. What starts as an air war eventually moves to a ground invasion due to East Germany not sitting back and being bombed with impunity: they hit West Germany, Denmark & the Low Countries with missile strikes. Operation Allied Eagle is the overall name of the Liberation of East Germany. British forces fight under the codename Operation DEACON with a ground invasion going in July.

1982. Iran falls into a counter-revolution in the middle of the ongoing war with Iraq and becomes a mess. In the south, along the Gulf shoreline, radicals - either pro-Islam, pro-Soviet, pro-Iraq... or just about anything - cause chaos to international shipping. US Navy deployments are made and fighting takes place. A major event, maybe something to do with the Soviets, but not a full-scale intervention of theirs, sees the United States make a limited deployment with limited objectives. We all know how those turn out...!

Not something I thought about beyond the Americans in the south who keep on expanding their footprint and thus needing more men.

Can see the Soviets also having a occupation zone at the border with Iran/Afghanistan.
