Major ground combat units of the Democratic American Republic’s Army & Marine Corps – March 1st, 2029DAR - called by Washington the 'New Confederacy' - has nine former USA states.

A United States Army Pacific unit, the 2d Infantry Division returned from South Korea in 2028 following the conclusion of the Taiwan Conflict: unofficially known as the Sino-American War. Peace in East Asia meant that American forces left the Korean Peninsula and the 2d Infantry Division moved to the Pacific North–West. Garrison HQ was at Joint Base Lewis–McChord with when Washington state joined with several other states in declaring succession from the United States of America through December ’28 / January ’29 following the disputed presidential election that November.
Like almost all other elements of the United States Armed Forces, the 2d Infantry Division was hit by waves of desertion, deliberate destruction of equipment and divided loyalties during the formation of the Democratic American Republic (DAR). Called upon to defend the new nation, the 2d Infantry Division is only able to field two combat brigades during the first fighting in March ’29.
Serving under the Idaho Corps, the 2d Infantry Division is deployed within that Pacific North–West state fighting against US Army units but also extensive – and varied – armed militia who are opposed to Idaho’s succession and subsequent joining of the DAR.
4th Infantry Division
Losing its commanding general and a significant portion of its officer staff & manpower to desertion, the 4th Infantry Division joined with the DAR army late in the succession crisis which tore apart the western portions of the United States. Garrisoned at Fort Carson in Colorado, with new command staff appointed as well as a late influx of retired/recalled soldiers living within Colorado as well as the states of the DAR, the 4th Infantry Division has from the start of open conflict been on the frontlines of the war.
Only able to field two of its own brigades, the 4th Infantry Division has been reinforced by the 81st Armored Brigade of national guardsmen from Washington state. It serves under the Colorado Corps. After retreating away from the city of Denver in light of an opening United States Army major attack, the 4th Infantry Division is currently defending the passes through the Rockies with its attached national guardsmen in Wyoming too on the flank.
7th Infantry Division
The 7th Infantry Division was raised by the DAR Army in January ’29. It is forming within California using retirees and volunteers from across that state plus the Pacific North–West DAR states of Oregon and Washington.
Three combat manoeuvre brigades are planned to be fielded once the 7th Infantry Division is fully manned but equipping them is proving more difficult than imagined. Currently attached to the California Corps in the rear and several months away from reaching operational readiness.
23d Infantry Division
The 23d Infantry Division was raised by the DAR Army in January ’29. It is forming within California using retirees and volunteers from across that state in addition to the DAR states of Arizona, Hawaii & Nevada plus the Pacific territories inherited by the DAR upon succession from the United States.
Three combat manoeuvre brigades are planned to be fielded once the 23d Infantry Division is fully manned but equipping them is proving more difficult than imagined. Currently attached to the California Corps in the rear and several months away from reaching operational readiness.
25th Infantry Division
A United States Army Pacific unit, the Hawaii-based elements of the 25th Infantry Division suffered few losses to desertion when the DAR Army was formed. With a garrison HQ at Fort Shafter in Hawaii, half of the division was in Alaska though. United States Army Alaska units remained loyal to the federal government as their state has done. Orders came for the rump 25th Infantry Division to urgently redeploy to the mainland to aid in the succession of the state of New Mexico in the face of federal United States efforts to prevent that. The first major combat formation to see action, the 25th Infantry Division engaged militia units from Texas – and elsewhere – entering New Mexico though didn’t fight with United States Army elements gathered on the New Mexico / Texas border until late February once the war began.
Fielding only two combat brigades, the 25th Infantry Division is currently with the Colorado Corps after shifting northwards last month to try and stop the United States Army offensive to retake Colorado. Losses have been heavy and the 25th Infantry Division is in retreat.
40th Infantry Division
A National Guard formation, the 40th Infantry Division consisted of many subunits of volunteer soldiers from across the western states of the United States. It was called out by the California state government in Sacramento – where the DAR capital now is – during the political violence which took place in the lead-up to and during the 2028 election. Protecting the voting rights of those whom the Supreme Court denied, the 40th Infantry Division was spread throughout California, Oregon and Hawaii less the federal government intervene.
The 40th Infantry Division came under DAR control when California was the first state to succeed in December ’28. Deployment orders came for the national guardsmen to first deploy into Arizona and New Mexico during the succession of those states before the ‘El Paso Incident’ on New Year’s Eve saw part of the 40th Infantry Division move into the far western portion of Texas: this event saw the capture of the near empty Fort Bliss (1st Armored Division was in the Baltics as part of a major US Army deployment) and a lot of military equipment there, which would later be put to use by the 40th Infantry Division.
Fielding a trio of combat brigades – the 29th Infantry from Hawaii, the 79th Infantry from California and the 80th Infantry (Arizona and California, using former Fort Bliss equipment) –, the 40th Infantry Division is assigned to the New Mexico Corps. El Paso along with much of New Mexico is back in United States hands but the 40th Infantry Division fights on.
41st Infantry Division
Newly-raised in late December ’29 on the initiative of the Governor of Oregon following succession, the 41st Infantry Division took under command that state’s 41st Infantry Brigade plus national guardsmen from Washington with their 81st Armored Brigade. The 41st Infantry Division moved into Idaho following the declaration from Boise nullifying the state’s vote for the Texas-based presidential candidate and instead supporting the California-based candidate. When Idaho succeeded, this brought about major civil unrest in the state though a good portion of the 116th Cavalry Brigade – national guardsmen from Idaho – joined with the DAR’s army: that brigade came under 41st Infantry Division control when the 81st Armored Brigade left for Colorado.
With two combat brigades, the 41st Infantry Division is currently with the Idaho Corps in that state. They are fighting the US Army at the front and militia units in the rear.
11th Armored Cavalry Regiment
A United States Army training unit based at Fort Irwin in California, the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment lost men and equipment during the succession of western states and the formation of the DAR. Brigade-sized despite the name, the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment was one of the most capable elements of the new DAR Army and from the first fighting in February – in light of what happened in Idaho and Utah – they have shown their worth.
The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment is currently fighting with the New Mexico Corps alongside the 40th Infantry Division and the DAR’s Marine Corps.
157th Infantry Brigade
Raised first in Colorado, the 157th Infantry Brigade consisted of national guardsmen and volunteers from that state with an intention for them to fulfil security tasks in the DAR state. Once war with the United States broke out, the under-strength unit was joined by others from Nevada. Equipment was light and training not the best: the 157th Infantry Brigade should never have ended up on the frontlines where it found itself.
Assigned to the Colorado Corps, the 157th Infantry Brigade has been depleted in the fighting and is close to being classified as combat-ineffective. Battles near Colorado Springs and Pueblo against some of the best units in the US Army have near destroyed this unit.
189th Infantry Brigade
A United States Army training unit based at Joint Base Lewis–McChord in Washington state, the 189th Infantry Brigade is now composed of former US Army Reserve soldiers from across the western states of the DAR. The intention of the military command in Sacramento was to send the unit eastwards to defend the frontiers of the new country. Events in Utah where the massacre in Salt Lake City of innocents by militia claiming allegiance to the United States saw Sacramento decide to invade state and protect its people. Utah, a remaining part of the United States, fought back against the DAR.
The 189th Infantry Brigade is engaging with militia and US Army Special Forces across the northern and eastern portions of Utah.
258th Infantry Brigade
Raised first in Arizona, the 258th Infantry Brigade consisted of national guardsmen and volunteers from that state with an intention for them to fulfil security tasks in the DAR state. Once war with the United States broke out, the unit was sent into New Mexico.
Assigned to the New Mexico Corps, the 258th Infantry Brigade is currently trapped in the Albuquerque Pocket. They are surrounded and cut off from external support. Hope of relief is fading and supplies are dwindling.
1st Marine Division
Based in California, the large 1st Marine Division was Pacific-rolled when in United States service. Losses to desertion and equipment destruction shook the US Marines when the succession crisis erupted as morale was fought to be high among US Marines. The federal government attempted to redeploy the 1st Marine Division to Alaska to stop it falling under the control of the ‘rebels in Sacramento’. This led to a shooting incident among fellow US Marines at the HQ in Camp Pendleton and a munity at Twenty-Nine Palms (both in California) which nearly destroyed the 1st Marine Division.
Currently fielding three marine regiments – brigades in all but name –, the 1st Marine Division is serving with the New Mexico Corps. They are back on the western side of the Rio Grande after a retreat from the Texan Panhandle starting in February when hit by heavy US Army forces on the attack.
3rd Marine Division
Based in Hawaii, the 3rd Marine Division was likewise ordered to move to Alaska when the succession crisis began. Hawaii – the third state to succeed – retained command of the 3rd Marine Division though. Still under-strength following losses incurred in the Taiwan conflict, the division wasn’t recalled to the mainland upon the outbreak of fighting.
Fielding two marine regiments – each with only the bare minimum strength –, the 3rd Marine Division remains in Hawaii. It is a counterattack force positioned to defend Hawaii from United States attack via Alaska and also Chinese adventurism too… a big ask.
5th Marine Division
Newly-raised, the 5th Marine Division is still forming up. It is spread across the south of California. Former Marines as well as volunteers from the DAR – as well as some who have come west across the divided America – are undergoing training.
Three regiments are eventually planned to be fielded by the 5th Marine Division yet this is taking time. Equipment is the main issue because this new DAR Marine Corps division is projected to be heavily equipped with main battle tanks, armoured vehicles and helicopters like the other two.
23d Marine Regiment
A Marine Corps Reserve unit, the 23d Marine Regiment was headquartered in California yet with only one-thirds strength there: the rest of the unit was elsewhere in the dividing country. Joined by national guardsmen from Nevada, the 23d Marine Regiment was initially a mobile reserve unit based in Nevada.
Send into Utah during February ’29, the actions of the 23d Marine Regiment helped light the fire which is the American Civil War. It is engaged in action against militia and US Army Special Forces throughout the south of Utah. Is the formation of the DAR a result of a 2nd American Civil War. |

Surprise you did not call the DAR the United Pacific Republic ore something as most states who are based at the Pacific and succeed end up with Pacific in their name. |

Surprise you did not call the DAR the United Pacific Republic ore something as most states who are based at the Pacific and succeed end up with Pacific in their name. Not a name I like. The Democratic American Republic has a ring to it which I like. So what happened to the National Guard units of those states. |

Interesting. Given the circumstances is there a similar break away on the east coast? If not I can't see the secession lasting long as the Pacific states lack the resources, at least unless their prepared to use nukes to defend their independence. I am a bit surprised they seem to have forced a couple of border states into the DAR, but reading a bit further I see why, although the Idaho intervention could be seen as controversial depending on the actual balance of support there.
Would be useful to know more of the context but sounds like there's serious crisis on the election with a lot of voter suppression prompting the rebellion, although whether that's by the existing government in Washington or extreme elements is unclear.
Similarly since a div had returned from Korea after the war with China does this mean that the US lost that conflict and possibly both Taiwan and S Korea have been lost or has the US and allies won so big that they no longer need as many forces in Korea?

It's something I've been thinking about for a while. East coast states took the legal approach and lost: California went too far. I have ideas about mass voter disenfranchisement. Also vote counts from whole states were rejected in the Electoral College too. Idaho but also Utah are outrageous land grabs. There was a draw with the confl5with China but many saw it as an American defeat. US forces left Korea and Japan so that would mark as a defeat to be fair. Alaska remains with the United States. I hope to do an opposite side ORBAT tonight then, hopefully, a fiction piece with details of the whole thing. |

United States Army Alaska
Currently based in Alaska – the only Pacific area state remaining within the United States –, this corps-sized command garrisons the largest state in the nation. Its mission is defensive though there are plans to use its 6th Infantry Division in an offensive manner soon: especially that formation’s airborne brigade.
The 6th Infantry Division was formed in January 2029 from elements of the 25th Infantry Division which had been home-based in Alaska rather than with the rest of the division in Hawaii. Two full combat manoeuvre brigades are assigned.
The 42nd Infantry Division is a unit of national guardsmen. Transferred from the Eastern Seaboard in February ’29, the division was airlifted to Alaska via Canada. Only two of the three combat brigades with the 42nd Infantry Division made the deployment: the 27th Infantry (New York) and 44th Infantry (New Jersey) Brigades.
US I Corps
Forming within the rear and composed of retirees and volunteers, the I Corps is currently spread across the central, eastern & southern portions of the United States at various sites. It will be another couple of months before the elements can see service with not all of them planned to serve with the I Corps in the field.
The 2d Armored Division is forming up at Fort Knox in Kentucky. It will field three combat brigades.
The 5th Infantry Division is forming up at Fort Hood in Texas. It will field three combat brigades.
The 9th Infantry Division is forming up at Camp Atterbury in Indiana and Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. It will field three combat brigades.
The 11th Airborne Division is forming up at Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Fort Campbell in Kentucky. It will field two combat brigades, with additional elements coming from elsewhere.
The 24th Infantry Division is forming up at Fort Benning & Fort Stewart (both) in Georgia. It will field three combat brigades.
The 10th Cavalry Regiment is forming up at Fort Dix in New Jersey. It will be brigade-sized.
US II Marine Expeditionary Force
Fighting in the southern reaches of New Mexico, the II MEF is composed of US Marines as well as national guardsmen from Florida as well as Alabama.
Reserve elements were mobilised in January ’29 when the corps-sized headquarters stood up in North Carolina. Deployment plans were first for the II MEF to go to Colorado to aid the federal government’s efforts to forestall the late succession of that state but inaction by the then president in his last weeks in office saw that stalled. Colorado succeeded while the Marines were still on the East Coast.
The II MEF has taken part in the offensive to enter New Mexico from out of the west of Texas and freed El Paso. It is currently sitting on the Rio Grande with Democratic American Republic forces on the other side of the river.
The 2d Marine Division includes three marine regiments (effectively small brigades) as well as a large heavy armour component.
The 4th Marine Division is smaller with only two regiments assigned – one of them re-established in February – though does have an armoured component too.
The 53d Infantry Brigade is a light force with national guardsmen under command.
US III Corps
Engaged in combat within New Mexico too, the III Corps is formed of regular US Army soldiers, the Army Reserve and Army National Guard elements.
The III Corps was stood up for possible action dealing with insurrection in December 2028 at the instruction of the Pentagon but no deployment orders came. At that point it consisted of just the 1st Cavalry Division as its major combat force with the 1st Armored Division being absent overseas. Fort Bliss, north of El Paso and just over the state line in New Mexico, was seized by DAR forces without a shot being fired by the III Corps due to inaction in Washington. When first Idaho and Utah were – as described by the new Secretary of Defence – ‘Shanghaied’ into the DAR, and thus war came about, the III Corps went on the offensive into New Mexico. Immediate objectives are in Arizona but the III Corps is tasked to advance to the Pacific overall.
The 1st Cavalry Division fields three combat brigades.
The 10th Mountain Division – an infantry division in all but name – fields three combat brigades.
The 36th Infantry Division fields three brigades of national guardsmen: the 56th Infantry (Texas), the 72nd Infantry (Texas) and the 256th Infantry (Louisiana).
The 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment (Tennessee) is brigade-sized.
US V Corps
The V Corps was deployed to the Baltics and Poland during the summer months of 2028 to face off against the major Russian threat to Eastern Europe. Forward-deployed elements of the V Corps were joined by significant US-based combat forces from Georgia and Texas: this included many soldiers whose homes were in the states of the DAR when those in succession joined together to form a new nation. Ahead of the first shots of the civil war being fired, elements of the V Corps were recalled home yet the majority stayed where it was: no authorisation came for the redeployment despite the outrageous situation. The new president at once reversed the ‘stay-in-place’ order. The Europeans were in uproar but the soldiers are needed at home. There has been a large number of deserters – not just those from the DAR states – who have sought political asylum within Europe rather than go home and fight.
The V Corps is currently engaged in the process of redeployment back to the United States.
The 1st Armored Division fields three combat brigades.
The 3rd Infantry Division fields three combat brigades.
The 2d Cavalry Regiment is brigade-sized.
The 3d Cavalry Regiment is brigade-sized.
US VII Corps
Activated in late January 2029, the VII Corps is currently fighting in Colorado. It is formed of regular US Army soldiers, the Army Reserve and Army National Guard elements.
The VII Corps has advanced westwards from Kansas and Nebraska into Colorado with the intention of clearing the Rockies and liberating Utah before eventually moving onwards as far as possible all the way to the Pacific. Control of Denver has been won and DAR forces encircled near to Colorado Springs too. The fighting is in the mountains now.
The 1st Infantry Division fields three combat brigades.
The 28th Infantry Division fields three brigades of national guardsmen: the 2d Infantry (Pennsylvania), the 56th Infantry (Pennsylvania) and the 155th Armored (Mississippi).
The 29th Infantry Division fields three brigades of national guardsmen: the 30th Armored (North Carolina), the 48th Infantry (Georgia) and the 116th Infantry (Virginia).
The 14th Cavalry Regiment is the re-designation for the 177th Armored Brigade from Camp Shelby in Mississippi which was a training unit before the new name and mission: it is brigade-sized.
US IX Corps
Also activated in late January 2029, the IX Corps is currently engaged in combat across Idaho and the southwestern reaches of Wyoming. It is formed of regular US Army soldiers, the Army Reserve and Army National Guard elements.
The IX Corps has entered Idaho to secure that state’s place within the United States against the forcible annexation by the Democratic American Republic. It is fighting to reach Boise as the immediate objective with latter, final ones, being the those on the Pacific. Significant problems with the mobilisation of certain Army National Guard elements within the IX Corps – due to political issues within select states – has seen the ‘stiffening’ of many units with US Army and Army Reserve soldiers to replace absentees: this is especially apparent within those units from Minnesota and Vermont.
The 34th Infantry Division fields three brigades of national guardsmen: the 1st Armored (Minnesota), the 2d Infantry (Iowa) and the 32d Infantry (Wisconsin).
The 38th Infantry Division fields three brigades of national guardsmen: the 37th Infantry (Ohio), the 76th Infantry (Indiana) and the 86th Armored (Vermont).
The 173d Airborne Brigade was in Tallinn when the civil war began. Recalled home early last month – replaced in the Estonia capital by British Paras – the brigade is now in central Idaho.
US XVIII Airborne Corps
Engaged in combat within Colorado as well as the northern reaches of New Mexico, the XVIII Corps is formed of regular US Army soldiers, the Army Reserve and Army National Guard elements.
The XVIII Corps was stood up for possible action dealing with insurrection in December 2028 at the instruction of the Pentagon but no deployment orders came. A portion of the command was in Europe yet the majority was home-based. Succession of the western states and then political shenanigans in Boise plus violent events in Salt Lake City saw the XVIII corps ready for conflict once the new president was in office.
Positioned between the VII Corps on the right and the III Corps to the right, the XVIII Corps is on the offensive to clear access through the Rockies. One division, the 82d Airborne, is being held back ready for an airdrop in the rear once the time is deemed right.
The 35th Infantry Division fields three brigades of national guardsmen: the 33d Infantry (Illinois), the 39th Infantry (Arkansas) and the 45th Infantry (Oklahoma).

Thanks for sharing - good read but sent me into orbit. 
Have begun building an ORBAT of pre-NATO/WAPA 1948-55 then ran into the Soviet - Yugoslav possible War of the 1948-53 and then thought of the GMT Games Stalins War www.gmtgames.com/p-214-stalins-war.aspx; I like board wargames - so could make my own take on this period with the Soviet Famine of 1946-47 thrown in and only limited nukes. Seems Kim Il-Sung threw a spanner in Stalins works. Well researching the period isn't easy but US - Scandinavians (not yet Finland) and some to be WAPA countries been drawn up. I'll post some when progress is made in some regional form like possible Scandinavia will be up first.

There is a story at the minute about a public letter written in France and signed by serving (reservist) and retired generals. The headline is that they are threatening a coup but that really isn't it: massive hyperbole.
I was reading somewhere else about an armed intervention to support the legitimate French Government in case of a civil war.
That got me thinking...
May 2021 - Coup in France. Doesn't quite work. Massive armed conflict as bits of military fight for Government and other bits for coup plotters.
June 2021 - After watching a NATO build-up ready to help, France requests a foreign intervention. Thirteen NATO countries send in major ground units to assist in the fight against the rebels. They attack from all sides.
With their own air cover, no serious French air/naval intervention either, NATO forces drive towards Paris and the Provence area to put down the rebellion while also landing on the Brittany coast around Brest. The Channel Tunnel is used, so too are Rhine crossings. Air-landings are made almost unopposed by parachute/airmobile units too. Its all over pretty fast. French Government forces get the friendly support and the rebels are toast.
