He claimed but he was no expert on naval warfare, as shown by the killing of his own troops during a demonstration exercise during this period. Given the quality of the transports available then if somehow the French could stop the RN interfering fro that period, the question is how many would get across - rather than going to the bottom - and in what condition. Also unless the RN is decisively defeated, which seems pretty unlikely, they have to maintain supply lines to get gunpowder, ammo etc as its uncertain how much they could steal from the British. Is that unloading of troops don at a beach ore harbor. I can't see any way they would be able to seize a port quickly, so would definitely have to land on a beach.

A harbour, a working one, is what you want for this. As stevep says, there is only so much that can be stolen. Maybe you won't get a guerrilla situation in the UK but the country won't be friendly as the French have been THE enemy for hundreds of years. Living off the land will only work for some things. So a harbour, or two or even three because you just know the RN will come a-calling, is needed. I know there were anti-invasion preparations in the Napoleonic Wars - Martell Towers spring to mind but I might be wrong - but the RN was the first and main line of defence. Maybe the French wing it - its possible; luck, idiocy or weather - and grab themselves a harbour and put me ashore. Then what?

Well that was the problem, He claimed 6 hours would be long enough to get the army across. He claimed but he was no expert on naval warfare, as shown by the killing of his own troops during a demonstration exercise during this period. Given the quality of the transports available then if somehow the French could stop the RN interfering fro that period, the question is how many would get across - rather than going to the bottom - and in what condition. Yes, He fired an Admiral who protested his idea of inspection in storms. Plus, its 1805, Europe is not prepared to fight his tactics, get 50-60 thousand men and who knows, he would need reinforcements which is the real issue.
