The Emperor would take an active interest in the boy from the beginning. The boy would be the future Emperor and it would be the Emperor's duty to see to the child's upbringing. Franz Joseph was a creature of duty and would attend to this one above all others. Nothing would be more important to him Franz Joseph had troubled relations with both Rudolph and Franz Ferdinand but may have had a better one with his grandson- or Max as we've been calling him. It is hard to see a worse one than Franz Joseph had with his nephew Impossible to say what political views the boy would have had. He would be 30 in 1914 and should have had a lot of say in the affairs of the Empire If he is brought up by his grand father he will most likely follow the policy of him in governing the empire. Wouldn't his grandfather's policies be(come) unsustainable in the long(er)-run, though?

If Franz Joseph I of Austria lives as long as he did in OTL i think we do not see much changes in how he runs the empire.

Yes, but this certainly doesn't mean that Austria-Hungary will not begin crumbling without significant reforms after Franz Joseph's death.

If our 30 old Kaiser can get a peace deal with the allied powers with out getting Germany on his roof he might be able to save his empire.

Wasn't Austria-Hungary already Germany's "bitch" by the time that Franz Joseph died in real life, though?

Yes as OTL Charles I of Austria who would be his second cousin if i am correct of our Kaiser Maximilian I in OTL tried to secretly entered into peace negotiations with France but it failed and as a result forced Austria-Hungary into an even more dependent position with respect to its seemingly wronged German ally.
