It would be like Iwo Jima or a Okinawa landing i think, hard but not impossible. Did the Japanese have that kind of submarine deployment in that area? Not that i know, but knowing Hitler he would turn if he had control of the Azores Islands into the Atlantic version of the Channel Islands, but on the Azores Islands i might think there would be one or two of those massive submarine pens the Germans build in Occupied France.

Is there enough space on the islands to do build such a thing?

Is there enough space on the islands to do build such a thing? I think so, the two biggest islands of the Azores, São Miguel Island and Pico Island have enough room for those submarine pens and airfields, the only problem is that the Germans like what they face on the Channel island might get blockaded by the Allieds forcing them to surrender or they will strafe to death otherwise.

They could reinforce the islands if they have control of the Iberian peninsula. They could have a corridor of sea constantly patrolled between the islands and Lisbon.

But the British and latter the US would have major submarine presence there sinking any transport ship heading towards those islands.

True; I think the Germans would withdraw eventually as they aren't worth the effort, and they're quite far away from the main battlefields.

They did now withdraw from the Channel island, only because of one person Hitler, he made it clear that he wanted to hold the islands at all cost, that will most likely be the same with the Azores Islands.

Given that this is Hitler we are talking about that is plausible.

Hitler was not a person a general wanted to go against to, if he want the Azores Islands to be fortified to the extreme and hold to the last man, i would not think that anybody would go against his orders for fear of him given different orders to have them arrested.

I feel just a tad sorry for whatever general would lose the Azores - but only a tad. They're still Nazis.

That is true but i still think the allies will not even bother to invade and just isolate and blockade the island, much easier and safer than invading.

That might be possible, carrier strike to isolate and destroy German air asset located on the island and to destroy port facilities might happen.

If Iberia is Axis-friendly it means the allies will have a much harder time securing the Mediterranean as it would mean they might not control Gibraltar and Malta.
