Also, he did become a hero for catching mafia bosses - but compared to the world stage, that doesn't amount to much.

What about this scenario? After WW2, the US get all of Korea as influence, but the SU gets the northern part of Japan. Japan stays crippled, Korea booms.

WI Japan had sold Taiwan to France in 1897? Their parliament was debating it.
If something like WWII and its Pacific threatre occurs then its probably seized by Japan either in Dec 41 or possibly occupied before then as with FIC. However that could cause some issues as it returned to French rule its not available for a defeated KMT to escape to, assuming again the Chinese civil war occurs and ends as OTL.

The question is would a French colonial regime restored in 1945/46 welcome the KMT in 1949, especially since the latter would be arriving in large numbers and probably quite open about their claims to rule Taiwan? It might also depend on what the native Taiwanese think about the idea as well but their likely to have less say either way.

At the very least they're anti-Communist. And with a regime as corrupt as the KMT's it'll be relatively easy to make a deal.
