Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Friday 1-20-991. Welch was homesick and tired. ============================================================================== More cockroach... Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Friday, Jan. 20th, 18992. No he is not. The cockroach is homesick, too. 3. San Francisco paid as the results came in. No results... no pay. THAT is the American way. 4. Hines was gypped. Yes; the term is THAT offensive. 5. HC 11, NSA 11, 0% success. 5. Refugees who returned to Manila, have bought into the same rumors the cvockroach has been spreading. They will be "set free", by the truth. 6. Fast draw. The Filipino patriot "lost". Being morally in the right does not help if the other fellow is a steet hooligan who has had a lot of practice in being a street hooligan. ================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Friday, January 20th, 18997. No potatoes means that the regular supply run has been disrupted. General Luna's attempts to block American access to local Filipino suppliers has had some success at last. 8. As predicted, Russell was arrested. 9. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits may have been patriotic Americans, but they were not stupid. They knew "wrong" when they saw it and did it. 10. Add cholera to the smallpox and malaria. The local water supply is contaminated.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Saturday 1-21-991. Casiono Paco –cor. Nozaleda y Calle de Herman [Herran] 2. Smallpox is still roaring hot in Manila. ==================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Saturday, Jan. 21st, 18991. Milsaps must have been stupid if he did not realize that pneumonia is possible in a tropical climate. 2. As usual, bummed a dinner off the Owens. 3. 1st California Flour Mill Thieves has been hostile territory for the cockroach. Private Thomas Robertson gave him the now traditional "promises" to attend a meeting; which is the traditional "blowoff" .of the era. 4. You might wonder if the cockroach ever filled up a notebook with anything that was advertently truthful? The short answer is "No". Inadvertent? Yes; a lot of inadvertent and hilarious truth. 5. Flunkies, Hines and Lloyd, of the Montana Mountebanks are flogging the horse. 6. Russell is headed for the rockpile and "The American" is headed for that big ragpile in the sky. 7. Flansberg is another one in the long line of people who is not paying any attention to the cockroach's racist romantic advice. HC 5, NSA 5 , 0% success as usual. =================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Saturday, January 21st, 18998. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits received their 4th Smallpox vaccination since landing in the Philippine Islands. 9. The West Pointers made the rounds, and this is the third time for the Train Bandits to be IGed. 10. Stand down is in effect.

Our favorite insect. Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Sunday, January 22d, 18991. If it is the Owens and the cockroach, then he bummed a meal. 2. Russell is still in the guardhouse, so I have no idea who put out "The American". 3. Miss Thompson did not make it. "She's dead, Jim." Should have stayed in Boston and put out children's books. 4. (^^^) You remember the 1st North Dakota Cable Car Absconders do you not? They jeered the cockroach. 5. (^^^) Maybe the North Dakotans had that in view? 6. Fort Polvorin San Antonio de Abad., It was a palisade the Americans threw up to parallel an existing Spanish works. This is natural as it formed a pre-existing strong point. 7. MAP. High School is the limit of the inner American line. Note how dangerous that is? No wonder the North Dakotans dug in. 8. The cockroach is high on Hong Kong 'happy sauce". 9. HC 10. NSA 10. 0% success. 10. PVT Berry put his money where it belonged... in a reputable BANK. 11. More government stores pilfered. Landon should have kinown better. ============================================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Sunday 1-22-9912. (^^^) Why do you think I called them the 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves? 13. That is the 4th US Cavalry. 14. Speaking of which... Can you believe the Americans used the Ayuntamiento de Manila as a horse barn while they put their troopers under canvas tents? 13. Just how many ladies is Albert "courting"? 14. Dewey was on watch always. He would be the difference when GEN Luna almost trounced the war criminal, GEN Otis, in the Second Battle of Manila. 15. Aguinaldo's Hong Kong "suppliers" got through. The USN did not have enough ships to patrol the north coasts off Lingayen, and those "suppliers" were not someones McKinley wanted to annoy. ===================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Sunday, January 22nd, 189915. (^^^) SS Zealandia full of Photo-shop thieves. (1st Tennessee Volunteer Infantry.). 16. Howard has smallpox; AFTER he was vaccinated. =====================================================

Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Monday, January 23d, 18991. Did I mention that Milsaps was a hypochondriac? 2. Pines and Georgeson were tobacco smokers? Whoopee. I would have thought the cockroach would have made a stronger impression on them. At the very least, they could have tried some "Hong Kong Happy Sauce" like he did. In any case they avoided Milsaps. 3. I would have SHOT the cockroach upon receipt of the order and taken the camera. (^^^) USS Laguna de Bay. I think that is the picture the cockroach took of her. 4. Stockton was homesick. 5. Chaplain Wood was headed to China for furlough. Missionary work. Boy did he pick the wrong person to mind the store in his absence. 6. HC 7. NSA 7. 0% success. 7. Things are so badly fouled up with the War Cry Salvation Army paper route, that Milsaps' flunkies delivered papers to him? 8. The war c riminal, General Otis', approved newspaper, which is a Katipunan paper, "The Manila Times", puts out the US occupation imperialist approved version of the news. Think about that one for a moment. 9. Father Dorrity was persona non grata (A person who called the war criminal GEN Otis, an idiot among other things; that is wrote "the truth" as he saw it; to the newspapers.). What surpised me was that Milsaps thought well of him. From what I gather, the Vatican sent him out to "clean house" and reassert the traditional Roman catholic church's hold on the populace, so yes, there was a lot more than the superficial anti-US army officer comments going on with the good padre. He was expelled as an agitator inimical to civil secular governance. ===================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Monday 1-23-9910. (^^^) Teatro de Filipino. What Welch meant was that the 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves' mens' chorus practiced for a show they were going to present to the 1st Minnesotans (Furniture Thieves) and their COL Wholley. 11. The rest of the itinerary is now known as Rizal Park. The resemblance to the US Capitol Mall is no accident. 11. (^^^) Calle Nozaleda, typical street vista in Ermita, a suburb of Manila. ====================================================- Diary of James J. Loughrey January 23, 189912. Refer to the SS Zealandia from the previous day. They were late; delayed by a little old typhoon... ==================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Monday, January 23rd, 189913. The Manila Times reached everybody. 14. GEN Miller is still "all at sea".15. Aguinaldo and Luna are at loggerheads about the date of attack. Luna wanted to go NOW, but Aguinalsdo kept delaying. US army historians think Luna was right. The war criminal, GEN Otis, was not ready with his own aggressions planned. Both generals will attack at about the same time, but that delay cost the Filipino Army of National Liberation its best chance to push the Americans into the bay. Refer to the fast draw situation of two days earlier. Give the Americans the slightest initiative and generally their enemies LOSE. This was something the Vietnamese learned, oddly enough, from the Filipino American War.

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Tuesday, January 24th, 18991. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits have manned a quiet sector for at least three months. When things are quiet with an enemy nearby, that means the following: a. You have not been patrolling hard enough. b. The enemy is up to something. c. You should pull out your "Murphy's Laws of War" and fix things immediately. Pay attention to the underlined. ===================================================== More cockroach.... Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Tuesday, January 24th, 1899 2. That shows me that Milsaps knows NOTHING about how photos were and are devloped. The Tennesseean must have laughed his tuba off after he sold Milsaps that cock and bull story. 3. More free sea shells. 4. (^^^) That is probably where the 1st Montana Mountebanks were billeted. 5. It is no wonder that Scott's brother, the black marketeer, was sent to the rockpile at the Bilibid. The WONDER is that Milsaps' stooge, Scott, had not joined him there yet! 6. Milsaps cannot be that naive. Scott needs an excuse and a cover to get into the prison to see and talk to hios brother about "business". Religion and salvation was the farthest thing from Scott's mind. 7. How did the "recruitment" among the 1st Montana Mountebanks go? HC 25, NSA 25, 0% success. 8. Ah, the cockroach... with the hindsight of history we can see how it actually turned out, but let me remind the reader, that the Filipino people gave the Americans a real run at it. And it was only the genuine promise of independence that kept the fires of revolution at bay for a while. ===================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Tuesday 1-24-999. Where would the "Germans" get 20,000 rounds of Remington rolling block rifle ammunition? How about Hong Kong? Who ran Hong Kong? Who were the "smugglers" running the contraband through the USN blockade? 10. Who were Milsaps' associates and "friends" in the smuggling business again?

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Wednesday, January 25th, 18991. To summarize, Aguinaldo is trying to establish his government's international bona-fides with bureaucratic machinations. It is especially im portant to get the Americans to defacto accept this bureaucratic legitimacy. ===================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Wednesday, January 25th, 18992. Milsaps is just full of contradictory rumors. 3. Russell is folding up "The American". That is how the American army shuts down "freedom of the press". 4. Of course with the rumors, Milsaps is just replete with actual details of how the American defense is getting ready. 5. 60 hours is too soon. 6. Another bummed meal. 7. "The Manila Times" ports out a sham story designed to buy time for the Americans. 8. Way to go cockroach! I suppose there was no profit to prosletying to people of color? Despicable was Milsaps, simply despicable. =====================================================

Diary of John Henry Asendorf Thursday, January 26th, 18991. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits continue to sleepwalk toward disaster. =============================================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Thursday, January 26th, 18992. With that long rambling and illiterate first paragraph, we see the problem as the 1898-1899 Americans saw the world. "Exceptionalism" in the negative sense is purely due to a nationalist parochialist point of view. The BRITISH suffer the same exact viewpoint fallacy and they will show it soon in the Boer War in a couple of years as they are utterly humiliated in South Africa. The world view, that Milsaps describes, is a rather standard imperialist one and one will see it again and again and again in many nations right down to VIETNAM and the Persian Gulf Wars for the Americans specifically. We have a RUSSIAN version in the Ukraine War, but... enough about that stupidity. 3. Milsaps ponders a new condition as his plans fall apart. The American army is about to undertake war. This is an environment where his kind of con game is never to prosper. He will, as we will soon read, will not be able to prosper in this environment at all. Even the politically sanctioned religious "political officers" who are present to measure and manage the soldiers' morale find that their schtick takes a back seat to the war about to kick off. 3. Once again the cockroach has access to and reveals that he has knowledge about American tactical dispositions. WHY? 4. At least the cockroach paid his share of the ride fare. 5. The mail was haphazardly handled. Really, the slovenly Milsaps could be expected to just toss his mail instead of stack it. Matters not until you have to take the mail out of the carriage. 6. Maud Sharp and Rosa Young are essentially naive versions of what I discussed in 2. . 7. The complaints about pay should not surprise us. The cockroach is about the money: always. 8. The request for an article was wasted on Milsaps.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Friday 1-27-991. At this late date, the rest of the world has come into the Bay to see the "kickoff". ===================================================== Diary of James J. Loughrey January 27, 18992. The 1st California Flower Mill Thieves are in the line. ===================================================== Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Friday, January 27th, 1899
3. What the Spanish of Old California and we today call El Nino. It is the major weather dynamic for the northern Pacific. 4. Troop patrols are about and they are nervous ones. "Stay at home" meant the cockroach was afraid he might be shot "for reasons". 5. That $36.00 was worth more than the cockroach was worth. See 4. ? The price of a bullet (2 cents) was more than the cockroach was worth. 6. Hines, being a 1st Montana Mountebank, has the "Mountebank concession" on War Cries. 7. HC 11, NSA 11, 0% success. ======================================================= Diary of John Henry Asendorf Friday, January 27th, 18998. The Oregoners stole the furniture factory. The Pennsylvanians stole the trains. The Californians stole the flour mill. The Nebraskans stole the cable cars and the power house. The Tennesseans stole the photographer studio and have charge of the prison. The South Dakotans, being idiots, play baseball. The Washingtonians stole the tobacco factory. The Minnesotans control the ferry and the newspapers. Did I leave anybody out? Oh yeah, the Regulars run the black market on the army side wholesale and retasil. So all that water buffalo that passed for beef, the ersatz chicken and alleged fresh fruits and vegetables passed through the Army Quartermaster and Commissariat. The supply sergeants were getting rich.

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Saturday 1-28-991. How many "ladies" did Welch string along? SEVEN... 2. The Casino de Paco still exists!3. Not to be confused with Irena's Vow which is a modern play about a WWII Polish nurse. 4. The "monkeypod" was imported from Mexico and is familiar to Californians. ====================================================== Diary of James J. Loughrey January 28, 18995. Those are USN "enemy in sight" nighttime warning signals in 1898. What was going on that the Flour Mill Thieves had Minnesotans shooting off rockets? ====================================================== The cockroach... Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Saturday, January 28th, 1899
6. Sydney, London and New York Salvation Army factions played politics. It was about who would get the money to be squeezed out of the Philippine Islands. Remember the 1900 reforms in the American Salvation Army have not happened yet and the (British) SA was and in some cases IS still a gigantic con game. 7. Tennesseans are still playing the cockroach for a fool. 8. The 1st Montana Mountebanks received more toilet paper. 9. The Chinese War Crys, which Milsaps could not read, probably were eventually used to wrap fish. That paper came a LONG way to be wasted like that. 10. HC 6, NSA 6, 0% success. 11. Well, the cockroach trod on some toes at the Cornhusker recruitment meeting. Chaplain Mailic made it clear that Milsaps had not "gone through channels" and that Milsaps was PNG at the regiment henceforth. Milsaps, as was the case of a fool, did not understand, it was not the chaplain who was telling Milsaps to "get bent", it was the regimental commander, acting through the chaplain who disinvited the cokroach... PERMANENTLY. 12. The "comrades" were Milsaps' flunkies. 13. Mister Chamberlain was a "carpetbagger". You may wonder if Mister Silvers arranged the meeting with the cockroach. Both of those scum seemed to have run in those specific circles where Silvers would find it remarkably easy to hook the reprobates up, together, with each other. That the cockroach seemed reluctant to take on Chamberlain as a renter, may speak well of Chamberlain. (SCOFF.). ===================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Saturday, January 28th, 189914. More Christmas mail off the SS Zealandia. 15. The home by Valentine's Day crowd are going to be sorely disappointed. 16. This is the first mention of "missing in action" Americans among the 10th Pannsylvania Train Bandits. Some of them were doing what Welch of the 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves was doing. The 10th Pennsylvania scouts seemed to have been lousy at it.

In the Home of an Ilustrado; this shows what circles Albert Welch was used to... and what caught his eye. Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Sunday 1-29-991. Better make that EIGHT women on Welch's string. 2. Senor Rivera has a nice family, but to whom did Welch gravitate? The wife? Probably the wife, since it was impolitic and dangerous to flirt with a Spaniard's daughter. Notice that while Welch is still a racist, referring to the Filipino gentry present as "natives", he is quite objective in describingf customs, manners and clothing and beauty. 3. Example: 3. Spanish Waltz. Not too dissimilar to a Virginia Quadrille... ===================================================== Contrast Welch with the cockroach... Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Sunday, Jan. 29th, 18994. If it is Sunday, then the cockroach bummed a breakfast off the Owens. 5. If it is Sunday then the cockroach will plagiarize the Encyclopedia Britainica about shellfish and claim it is his own original research he writes for the New York War Cry about mollusks. 6. If it is Sunday, then the cockroach will write about where PVT Scott's brother currently breaks rocks... 7. The "service", as we now note, was exclusively the cockroach's crowd of flunkies. Stockton's "testimonial" is the third time he pulled that wool and i t cuts no ice. Therefore HYC 7, NSA 7, 0% success. 8. Stockton, in our day and age, would be called a shammer. His promises to arrange a meeting with the 1st Colorado Cattle Rustlers would have been worthless, as he was a proven repetitive liar, but this is the cockroach who reported it as a success. 9. At least the cockroach washed his dishes. It must have been SUNDAY. ===================================================== . Diary of John Henry Asendorf Sunday, January 29th, 1899 10. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits chaplain has gone to China to "convert the heathens". The effrontery of Americans going to proselytize a civilization 10x older than their own is only surpassed in EVIL by the BRITISH, who fought a war to hook the Chinese people on Opium, and prosecuted that accursed war and seized Hong Kong, as a result of that war, as a place to run their drug smuggling and other criminal RACKETS throughout the western Pacific. The drug smuggling alone into China brought in incomes to the British treasury second only to the looting and pillaging of INDIA that they undertook at the same time. I do not apologize for that comparison of American and British effronteries. There was very little difference in actual motives...or outcomes. It is, after all, why the Americans were in the Philippine Islands. A convenient place to stage forward for the looting of China, was the Philippine Islands to American imperialists. It was why the French were in Indochina and the Germans had seized a base at Tsingtsao and the Japanese were in Korea and the Russians were in Manchurfa... To loot and pillage locally in the name of "civilizing the Chinese". The Filipino people were just a waystation in that scheme.
CYNICAL MILETUS.

Would you believe it? Finally caught up after the 2 week hiatus! Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Tuesday 1-31-991. False alarm. 2. The Colonel was at headquarters plotting the defense. 3. Aguinaldo nixed Luna's planned attack. This was a COSTLY misatake as the Americans now knew the primary threat axis and the general scope and shgape of Luna's tactical dispositions revealed in the botched movement to contact. ================================================================================ Diary of John Henry Asendorf Tuesday, January 31st, 1899 4. And the 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits are oblivious... =============================================================================== Diary of James J. Loughrey January 31, 18995. The 1st California Flour Mill Thieves had the jitters. The attack will come between the 1st Washington and the 1st California. GUESS who is between those two regiments? (^^^)

Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Thursday 2-2-991. See map. 2. The bend in the Pasig River would have been a tough objective for the 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves and GEN Charles King. It still was two days later. ============================================================================= And who remains oblivious? Diary of John Henry Asendorf Thursday, February 2nd, 18993. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits slept through the excitement to their immediate east. =============================================================================== Diary of Chriss A. Bell Feb. 2, 18993. The 1st Oregon Cattle Rustlers seemed to have gone into the dairy business. 4. Bell does not seem to have seen the same thing happened as Welch did. 5. Nurses that close to the front was NOT TOO GOOD.

The cockroach reappears. Diary of John E.T. Milsaps Friday, Feb. 3rd, 18991. This is of some interest. Five of the six missing Americans return to the fold and somehow (And I do not understand why this happened; nor can I explain it. M.) those idiots, instead of promptly reporting to their respective units and briefing their commanders on their mission failure and the fact that Filipino soldiers are inside the American perimeter, decided as a body to show up on the Reverend Owens' doorstep and tell their tale to HIM. I suspect it is because they were asked to find the Reverend Owens and enlist his help to somehow plead Reverend Brown's (Remember the Methodist "slacker" that the cockroach turned out three weeks ago? M.) case to the military command. We have the cockroach's contention that the Reverend Brown became drunk and staggered blind into Filipino hands. We have no Filipino source that claims this happened, though. Note that it is OWENS the soldiers want to see, and not the cockroach?Mister 2. Filipinos are no more savage, because they merely have spears and bolos, than American arsonists or thieves er soldiers are, who are armed with cannon and Krags. (Point being, that the man's (savage) acts reveal (his lack of) moral character. M.). 3. The cockroach swindled PVT Goetz. I presume he did the same to PVT Landon. But NOTICE that it is the soldiers who are "spreading the gospel" among the Filipino populace and NOT the cockroach? They are the requesters of the Tagalog and Spanish language pamphlets. 4. MKr. Randall is another carpetbagger. 5. HC 5, NSA 5, 0% success. 6. 7. Too bad the cockroach missed the point, was it not? Hong Kong Joy Juice will do that to you. ====================================================== Diary of Alfred Burton Welch Friday 2-3-998. The 1st Washington Tobacco Thieves are detailed to this contraption. There is a river raid in the works fo gather in the Filipino gunboat upriver. I guess piracy is an addendum to the Tobacco Thieves?. 9. The USS Laguna de Bay. Remember the photo (^^^) that the cockroach was not supposed to take of her? 10. A good indicator of morale is the suicide rate in the units. That the Tobacco Thieves lost a man to "homesickness" is an alarm bell to ME that something is seriously wrong in their command setup. We shall see soon if I am right? ===================================================== Diary of John Henry Asendorf Friday, February 3rd, 189910. The 10th Pennsylvania Train Bandits may have brought back the "lost sheep" (See Milsaps' diary entry above. M.), but nobody connected the dots?!? ==================================================== Diary of Chriss A. Bell Feb. 3, 189911. The 2nd Oregon Cattle Rustlers are still "All Quiet On the Northeast Front". To their west Dewey opened up a heavy barrage. As Bell told it; this night action is the entre-acto to the Second Battle of Manila. 12. See MAP. Dewey was shooting into the woods between the Santa Mesa Pumping Station and Caloocan. Those shells were screaming OVER Manila city proper in 1899 and slamming into and around the Katipunan lines just east and north of the Intramuros. I knew the bombardment was reckless, but I did not fathom how insane the event was until I read that diary entry and could map it.
