The upset of the century, it was. 2008 Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) defeated Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in a landslide, flipping then Republican-strongholds of Virginia and Indiana and making other Republican strongholds like Montana and North Dakota competitive. Everyone was surprised in the upset former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney managed the upset of the century on Barack Obama.
Romney was able to win the Republican nominations without too much real opposition, although he did face nominal opposition from Sen. Rick Santorum (PN), former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, and Representative Ron Paul. Meanwhile Obama had the support of his party.
Quickly, polls showed that the campaign was much more competitive then 2008. Indiana seemed highly likely to flip back into the hands of the GOP. Several swing state seemed likely to determine the election. Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, and Colorado. Soon, Pennsylvania, Iowa, and New Hampshire were added to this list. The selection of Florida Senator Marco Rubio as a running mate did much to help his campaign.
Romney was often regarded throughout the campaign as being careful with what he said and did, while Obama’s comments about “clinging the guns and clinging to religion” faced increase criticism front the devoutly religious Romney.
During the debates, Romney completely caught Obama off guard in the first debate and did just as well in the Second and Third Presidential Debates. In the Vice Presidential debate, Rubio completely destroyed Vice President Biden, who at one point went on a rumbling rant on healthcare, Delaware, and his son Beau that caused Obama to seriously consider replacing Biden on the ticket with Secretary or State Hillary Clinton but ultimately decided against it.
When the day of the election came, it was quickly announced that Romney flipped Indiana. Later in the night it was announced Nebraska’s Second Congressional District. Later in the night, all swing states remained uncalled. North Carolina was called first, for Romney. 99 electoral votes remained on the table when Florida was called for Romney. This quickly alarmed the Obama campaign. It was soon followed by Ohio. Romney had now pulled ahead of Obama in the electoral vote, although he was still behind in the popular vote. New Hampshire was soon called for Obama. Iowa for Romney. However, when FOX called Virginia for Romney, Obama conceded. Colorado and Pennsylvania followed, also for Romney.
Down-ballot, Republicans also preformed well. The Senate flipped to the GOP with seats in Ohio to North Dakota flipping. Governors races in Montana and Missouri also flipped. The GOP held onto the House of Representatives. Romney was set to unseat Obama as the 45th President.
