  Looks potentially very interesting although why they have to cross what looks like very abandon German lines to reach the battalion sounds odd.  Hopefully explained in the film when it comes out.

  Good question.  If the battalion is in an advanced position its possible that they may be out of radio contact.  The other options would be cables - which were often cut by artillery or other things and carrier pigeons, which might have been unreliable but is still better than sending two men on their own.  Or even, a better bet if they know roughly where the battalion is, having an a/c drop a message. 

  All of those routes might be tried but sending two men seems one of the least reliable.  Also there's the question of the unit being in a somewhat isolated position, hence out of communication but still advancing!  There might be answers in the book but it does seem a dodgy background for the film.  Unfortunately that tends to be too common in many action films.
