Lore of Night of the Living Dead (1990)

On August 23, 1989, there were reports of riots occurring throughout the Eastern Seaboard of the United States. Initial reports included slow-lumbering people that attacked other by biting. These people could shrug off punches, nightsticks, and even gunfire to the center mass. What baffled authorities was how a shot to the head took down these shamblers. Rumors started what was the cause of this: drugs, germs, viruses, biochemical warfare, terrorism, divine intervention, and even a space-borne virus. That evening, the CDC confirmed that the bodies of the recently deceased were returning to life and are attacking the living. Police, the military, and armed civilians are mobilized to clean up these shamblers. Due to their slow movement, the shamblers fall to the superior firepower, mobility, and better organization exhibited by the living. The outbreak has been more or less contained by the following day.

So in this 1989 setting, how will this affect U.S. politics and the Cold War? Will this make George H.W. Bush win 1992? And what about the thawing relations with the Soviet Union? What about Iraq? Would the U.S. think that this was a chemical weapon sent by Saddam? At this time, the Iraq-Iran War just ended and the U.S. and the USSR still have a superior firepower against the zombies.
