The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered

  Interesting.  I had heard the term sub chasers before for the USN but didn't know that much about their history.  Although probably not idea for their official role they seem to have got a lot of use in other areas, especially in supporting amphibious assaults and oddities such as the 'Shetland bus service' with Norway. The rapid production of the 1st elements does seem to have pushed the USN into an earlier acceptance of convoying than might have occurred without them.

  There was one small factual error.  The period before convoying was implemented in US and Caribbean waters wasn't known as the "Happy Time" but as the "2nd Happy Time" as the U boats had already had a previous period of great success in the months after the Fall of France when their access to bases in France, RN heavy losses in the Dunkirk evacuation and the threat of invasion mean that the RN was drastically short of escorts and many convoys were unescorted much past western Ireland, which meant if a U boat came across them they suffered badly.
