"Tell me that Apollo never stopped..."
(time traveller from 2020 blushes) "Hmm, it ended in 1972 after Apollo 17..."
(1970 person hit the roof)
"WTF happened to the last three missions ?"
"They were canned."
"Dang. Well, then i have to ask, what kind of lunar program replaced Apollo, and when ?"
(time traveller from 2020 blushes even harder)
"Apollo was never really replaced, as far as manned flight to the Moon go. In fact we haven't returned yet..."
(1970 person shake his head in disbelief)

"dear time traveller, you are telling me, that your are coming from 2020. Ok, so then please tell me the list of presidents after Richard Nixon..."
"Gerald Ford"
"Whaaat ? how on Earth did that one ended president ?"
"Too complicated to explain. James Earl Carter succeeded him."
"What ? the democrat peanut butter farmer ? A democrat, from memory. But they had far better candidates ! What the heck happened to Humphrey, Udall..."
"They both died. Cancer and alzheimer."
"Where does that carry us ?"
"Ford, 1974-76. Carter, 1976-1980"
"A presidential election in '74 ? or did Nixon kick the bucket... oh lord... was Spiro Agnew president ? and you had to kill him ? and thus Ford become president ?
"too complicated. Well, in 1980 a Republican won."
"Ah, Nixon returned."
"Nope. Ronald Reagan.
"Reagan ? the actor ? Then who's vice-president, Jerry Lewis? I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady! And Jack Benny is Secretary of the Treasury !"
"Then there was Bush..."
"what, the former head of the CIA ? this is weirder and weirder..."

A my fault, i mistake this thread with a other member thread, sorry Zyobot. It's fine, no harm done . "dear time traveller, you are telling me, that your are coming from 2020. Ok, so then please tell me the list of presidents after Richard Nixon..." "Gerald Ford" "Whaaat ? how on Earth did that one ended president ?" "Too complicated to explain. James Earl Carter succeeded him." "What ? the democrat peanut butter farmer ? A democrat, from memory. But they had far better candidates ! What the heck happened to Humphrey, Udall..." "too complicated. Well, in 1980 a Republican won." "Ah, Nixon returned." "Nope. Ronald Reagan. "Reagan ? the actor ? Then who's vice-president, Jerry Lewis? I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady! And Jack Benny is Secretary of the Treasury !" "Then there was Bush..." "what, the former head of the CIA ? this is weirder and weirder..." I take it that the period of elections starting in 1976 would've thrown most people for a loop back then? Maybe not too surprising, considering how even during the 1980 cycle, Carter was crushing Reagan in initial polling (which hugely reversed itself come actual election night). Even leaving 2016 and 2020 aside, the results of 2008 would seem downright unbelievable to rank-and-file 1970s folks. "Wait, you had a black president after it all went to hell under this George Bush guy?? Wait, wouldn't he be rather old to serve as president by that--oh, that's his son you're talking about?? ...Okay, that makes a bit more sense. But Jesus Christ, this 'ASB' you're talking about must be screwing things up something fierce to make the future you're describing come to pass."

Sure "What, Bush dynasty ? the father, and two sons ? And the Clintons - husband and wife ?" IMHO that was also one of the OTL reasons for Trump - voters fatigue and/or defiance toward "dynasties" - too much Bush vs too much Clinton...
Also our time traveler might be pretty stunned by Roy Cohn legacy...
"Roy Cohn ? the McCarthy attorney ? I thought he was politically dead after McCarthy disgrace and death..."
"Like hell. In the 60's he went to New York, colluded with the political machines and mafia there, build an empire.
Then he groomed Donald Trump (the son of Fred Trump, yes, remember this one ?) plus a " team evil" - Roger Stone, Lee Atwater, Paul Manafort... suffice to say, that "team evil" wrecked US political landscape all the way from Nixon to Trump, through Reagan and Bush years. Basically the whole story reads like a bad thriller mixed with a touch of James Bond supervillains clichés.
Do you know one of them has Nixon face tatooed on his back ?"
"Are you f... kidding me ?"

I was reading about a woman who supported Goldwater IN 64. Her name was Hilary. I am sure by your time she was a life long republican I bet she even ran for elected office either in New York Illinois. Another politician I am sure became president was Charles Percy he was considered the republican answer to j.f.k. I am also sure Mayor John Lindsay by 1980 he was elected GOVERNOR. by now WE HAD ANY southern Democrats? No, Hillary switched to the Democratic Party in 1968, and remained with the party ever since. She became First Lady once Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton was elected to the presidency in 1992, becoming a senator from New York in 2000 (and reelected to that position in 2006). She ran for office in 2008, losing the Democratic nomination to the man who'd become our first African-American POTUS, Barack Obama. Hillary ran again in 2016 on a platform of 'inclusive capitalism' and the prospect of being the first female POTUS, but lost to businessman, reality TV star and GOP nominee Donald Trump in the most stunning electoral upset .
As for Southern Democrats, Bill Clinton--who, as mentioned before, served as Governor of Arkansas in the years leading up to the election--became president in 1992. Because of a combination of the shortcomings of incumbent POTUS George H.W. Bush, and Clinton's charisma and ability to move the Democratic Party substantially rightwards in response to the changing paradigm of things, Clinton won a plurality of the popular vote and 370 electoral votes (and was also reelected in the subsequent 1996 election, to boot). While in office, Clinton's presidency was much characterized by centrist 'Third Way' policies that included certain economic deregulation, signings of international trade agreements, and welfare reform so that those on the lower rungs of society could better 'help themselves', rather than remain perpetually dependent on government assistance. He wasn't without his baggage, however, as evinced by the Monica Lewinsky scandal (and subsequent impeachment trial due to perjury charges) and massive tough-on-crime legislation that, in retrospect, is widely regarded as counterproductive nowadays (i.e. the the 1994 crime bill).
Pure gold, really. Works very well with my own post.
"After the elder Bush you know, the one that went from CIA to Reagan successor... when was that ?"
Ok so Buh was Reagan vice-president. Reagan was elected in 1980, re-elected in 1984..."
"1984 ? Carter again ?"
"Nope. He was toast, having lost in 1980. 1984 saw his VP make a presidential run.
"Who was he ?
"Walter Mondale."
"Sweet jesus. and he lost."
"Sure. He carried just one state out of 50."
"Hell of a landslide. Kind of Republican revenge for Goldwater humiliation in '64 !"
"That's an understatement. So Reagan was re-elected, up to 1988, and then hit the 2 mandate limit."
"Logical. Yet you are telling me, his VP Bush was elected. So you had 12 years or even 16 years of GOP presidents !
"12 years. Bush lost his reelection atempt in 92'. Defeat by, well, Bill Clinton. and his wife Hillary Rhodam..."
"Wait, did you said Hillary ? ..."

"So how his life in 2020, under president... Trump ?" "Better not to talk or think about it. Presently our country is devastated by an asian flu... the situation is abysmal." "How so ? In 1970 I vaguely remember, there was some kind of flu from Hong Kong... but nobody really seemed to be worried about it. Life carried on unabated, Vietnam included. Your flu must be extremely nasty - dear God, is it worse than the 1918 Spanish flu ? no surprise the world would be on its knees..." "no no, that flu is pretty bad, make no mistake, but not worse than the 1968 or 1958 ones you went through. "And yet you are telling me the United States and the world are in a situation as bad as WWII... only with a mild-flu ?
I mean, how could a 1958- or 1968- like flu, far less severe than the Spanish flu, wreck the United States and the world - even more when you have 2020 extremely advanced medecine to fight it ? "You have no idea..."

I wonder how they'd react to being showed this video on presidential elections from 1789 to 2012. Everything in timestamps 0:00 to 3:06 would be old news to them, but depending on exactly when in the decade they come from, the results of 1972 or 1976 may prove greatly surprising. The former for matching FDR's 1936 landslide, and the latter for being spurred by revelations of Nixon's criminality and how the GOP's image was tarred for it. And come 1980 onward...yeah, you'd really throw downtimers for a loop there.

With respect, that last part of your post was pretty uncalled for. I don't know about the Average Joe on the street, but I think that most of us here understand how delicate and implication-ridden the current year is. And that odds have it that we'll have to remain on our toes for a good while longer, to boot.
Anyways! Moving away from electoral politics for a change, I'm wondering what Seventies people would make of internet celebrities like Joe Rogan? With the guests he invites on and the variegated subject matters he talks with them about for hours on end, I think he stands out from the more empty social media influencers of our time.

Sorry for that. Forget that siliness.
...
John McCain. Remember, the badass - who barely escaped the Forrestal carrier inferno in July 1967, only to be taken captive for six years soon thereafter ? He is running for president ! Seeking the GOP endorsement. Against the son of Bush - a former F-102 pilot.
