The FSB still loyal to the President would start to arrest conspirators. However, the fact that the Russian President was rescued by U.S. Navy SEALs would give the Ultranationalists the fuel they need that the current leadership is weak. Imagine having to rely on the perceived enemy just to save you.

If the coup had a 1991 coup gone violent vibe to it, then it would likely be acceptable as the loyalists would be busy trying to repel the ultranationalists and any help in getting him back would be acceptable, either that or the loyalists tried but failed, this leaking the situation to the US... or even having the entire operation being joint but the US received word that the Spetznaz team got slaughtered to a man by the ultranationalists. The movie is very light on the details. |
