With some cruise missiles, no better way to defect to the other side than to level your former coup plotters. Automatically pardoned for sure. I'm guessing starting from there, the U.S. and Russia would start how to normalize relations once more. Wonder if the captain of the Arkansas will be awarded the Hero of the Russian Federation.

I wonder what award will the Russian admiral and the Russian President receive from their American counterparts.

Not the Medal of Honor, as i do not know if none Americans military personal gen get it.

If anything, the hardliners would probably go use memetic weapons to try to sway the public to their opinion soon enough, depending on how deep and wide they are. Remember people, in 2016 Putin and Associates had Russia undergo the largest intelligence operation known to man just so they can revive the 'glory days of the USSR'... which included cyberattacks, information warfare, and memetic weapons.

Usually such things tend to kill you though.

That wholly depends on the circumstances in Russia during this time. Remember, Putin and Associates are the ultra-nationalists, so for something to dethrone them enough that they only have comparatively insignificant portions of the government (insignificant enough that a coup is considered a better option)...

Which, in this case, would likely cause a small civil war, depending on how deep the ultranationalist crazy goes.

Depends on how large the circle of co-conspirators around defense minister, Admiral of the Fleet Dmitriy Durov, if there where some alive who where in Moscow at the time when the destroyer leveled the building he was in then they would go into hiding, if all of the co-conspirators died in the building, well that ends the Russian coup of 2018.

Eh, I wouldn't be surprised that Dmitriy Durov had specifically some of his co-conspirators not with him just for that scenario. A coup entirely depends on how hard you make it to stomp out... and if it is easy to stomp out, then it is hard to gain support for your ideology...

True, he not only needed to get writ off the president but also any supporters that might be in Moscow.

Yep, and if history decides to rhyme, then the co-conspirators would probably be driven out of Moscow like how the 1991 coup in Russia went. Depending on how that goes, it'll probably be civil war... with nukes.

Only if they have co-conspirators in control of major armed force assets left, but having a building blow up with the ringleader and the United States on the side of the legitimate Russian president, i doubt it is a good idea to fight on, better it is to run.

Given that they were willing to kill anyone in their way and the only reason that the President is alive is likely to his popularity... ... the conspiracy is made up of idiots with more ideology than sense so it is likely they'll try anyway.
