Intramuros defenders are lightly armed and the Walled City is near a population center. Unless the defenders managed to block the entrance of Fort Santiago with a bus or several trucks, then I don't see anything in Intramuros holding out.

Dawn of the Dead (4/11) Movie CLIP - The Dead Will Walk the Earth (2004) HD
There's a backstory here on the first few seconds of the clip.
Watching the news ticker, it says: Secretary of Defense Wesley Coller has firmly denied that any part of the current is due to any chemical or biological attack. "Due to the number of friendly and unfriendly countries involved in the outbreak, we have no reason to suspect any terrorist involvement."
Since the movie is set in May 2004, the memories of 9/11 and the ongoing deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq are still fresh in people's minds. Hence, it would be natural to think that the zombie virus was a bioweapon.

Reviving this thread because of the 20th anniversary of the outbreak is coming up.
WHY didn't the survivors STAY IN THE MALL!? (Dawn of the Dead 2004)
TLDR: The survivors didn't stay because the mall became their prison, the food will run out and so will the power, and they will be driven mad from isolation.
ITTL, December 25, 2003 would be the last normal Christmas the human race in modern times would experience.

We are approaching the 20th anniversary of the outbreak.
But a month before that, it was the disastrous First Battle of Fallujah.
This disastrous U.S. military operation would leave a bitter taste in the ongoing Iraq War. Unfortunately ITTL, the aftermath of the First Battle of Fallujah would be overshadowed by the zombie pandemic a month later. Since General James Mattis was in Iraq at that time, I'd see Mattis lead U.S. and Allied contingents to hold out against zombies in Iraq.

That would have been a good sequel for a movie, don't you think gillan1220 ? The unofficial sequel is known as Biggest Fear, which is a fanfic. I would like to see a DOTD fanfic from multiple perspectives such as the U.S. President, a contingent of American and allied forces in Afghanistan and Iraq, or the Sino-Russian nuclear war. Apparently, Synder moved on from Dawn and focused on DC superheroes. Even Army of the Dead isn't connected but is somehow considered by fans to be the spiritual successor.

So it's possible to write a fan fiction on those events?

So it's possible to write a fan fiction on those events? I would if I was not busy. Mattis leading a survivor colony of Americans and allies in Iraq would be interesting.
