IJN Shinano- naval history - 294 How a previously cautious American submariner and a stupid Japanese captain combined to kill the largest ship ever sunk by a submarine. 29 November 1944. Enright proved THIS TIME to have nerves of steel. The Mark 14 of 1944 was a lot different from the Mark 14 of 1942; the torpedoes ripped through the Shinano's torpedo defense as if it was not even there. It took a long time to die, but the Americans had good intel on how bad the Yamato design actually was. It was probably doomed in spite of the heroic Japanese damage control party efforts. Captain Abe chose to go down with the ship. He took 1,500 crew with him. He was an idiot. As for Enright, he found some redemption after his earlier yellow streak aboard USS Dace, which the October before had covered herself with glory under the skipper who relieved Enright. About USS Dace... Drachinifel sometimes needs to be double-checked as he is "enthusiastic".

U534 - Artifacts from a sunken U-Boat - naval history - 295 The RAF had 4 cracks at her and lost 3 bombers to her FLAK gunners before the end. She was a "school boat". Her three war patrols yielded zero results. In the end she was bombed at sea in the 5th RAF attack in the Kattegat on her way to surrender, AFTER the formal surrender was declared, and she sank in shallow water 5 km north of the 56th parallel. The RAF Liberator that sank her, was shot down by her in its attempt. Its crew DIED in the crash. 48 of the 50 U-boaters survived the bombing and the hulk became a reef: until the British, embarrassed that they had no "captured" U-boat of their own like the Americans did, went and got her and put her up as a "war trophy" at Birkenhead in the 1990s. She has been mutilated since then but is still displayed at the Western Approaches Museum in chunks as of this date. See Map.

USS New Jersey - America’s Most Decorated Battleship - naval history - 297 Being decorated for floating is not the same as being "useful". The USS Iowa never "sank" anything or mission killed anything important. Her career was as a presence. If I am going to make fun and lampoon other navies for their follies, then the USN is also fair game for this comedy. a. Drachinifel seems to not understand how electromagnetic fields "phase". b. Interesting side facts, --- helicopters flying through wet air generate electromagnetic effects including radio waves. --- the USS New Jersey is not being cared for, as she would be in service, as you can see her paint flake and her deck plates rust in place. You can see the insuffiecient remediation. This lack of constant "chip and paint" is what caused the capsize of the USS The Sullivans and has led to recent frantic efforts to rebuild the USS Olympia. Weather wears out a warship or any ship incredibly fast. Salt water does not help this process. Now to lampoon the USS New Jersey. After reading that nonsense, and taking the time to stop laughing, when "the world's greatest battleship" has competitors like HMS Warspite, USS Washington and USS Massachussetts, you know, battleships that actually DID sink or mission kill important enemy ships and participated directly in direct combat in history changing events, and objectively understanding that the USS New Jersey was / is functionally a "battle cruiser" which served mostly as a command ship, an "admiral's yacht" *(Halsey so misused her at Leyte Gulf when he should have been aboard the flagship aircraft carrier; the USS Lexington, which was where the air battle staff who was receiving the tactical intelligence was.), when she was actually present in battle, and as a floating target and enemy distraction from the more important aircraft carriers, then you begin to realize that she was an exercise in American adduced elephantism and obsolescent technology from the year she was built down to the present. She was and is a "Yamato". Or a Kirov, if you want to throw a Russian "me-too" onto the folly list. As for being the only surface warship with atomic projectiles designed for its guns, that is for artillery; it is not exactly true. US 8 inch bore diameter gun cruisers from 1981 forward had the ability to deliver atomic projectiles as gunfire support during amphibious operations if they had needed. It would not make any sense, but the capability was there.

Good shooting makes up for terrible design does it not? They heeled over hard in a turn and could not shoot when they did so. Aside from that, they were vulnerable to mines and were "wet" boats aft.

Learning about the Imperial Japanese Navy - Introductory book recommendations - naval history - 300 The New Vanguard series of books on the IJN are cheaper and just as informative; unless you can read Japanese and go straight to the JMSDF staff study series.
