What you should understand is that crossed people aren't zombies, they are not braindead, they know how and where to strike and take pleasure of that. If a "classical" (Romero-Style) zombie alone isn't so dangerous, a crossed infected is probably the worst danger ever encountered: either he can committs atrocities, take advantage of his skills and work with other crossed! So a, lets say a Navy Seal who has become infected is not somebody you want to encounter then. Or like Norquist saying the words "Espie baby". I couldn't stop laughing 🤣 |

Well unlike a classic zombie they would be stopped by a lead infusion to the brain. However against such a trained military figure, unless their distracted by their urges, you would have to be damned lucky to get the shot in 1st.
Not sure that comparing with zombies is a good idea as they seem very little like zombies. Yes a mad urge to destroy but as other have said they have full use of their faculties.

It will stop them immediately. If their military then other damage could take too long, which was the point I intended to make. Depending on mythos I'm not sure a head shot would stop all zombies - as opposed to a decapitation I think - but lesser damage wouldn't as I understand it greatly impair their actions.

Washington DC had quickly become a slaughter house. The police were not trained that for that kind of situation and were rapidly overwhelmed. Riot police had tried to respond in the kind of way they are trained to do when responding to a crowd control situation. It was a futile attempt as tear gas and rubber bullets had no effect on their opponents. By the time they switched to live ammunition it was already too late to hold back the unholy hoard.
Drone footage from a private citizen that was uploaded live to Facebook saw the Crossed desecrate the Lincoln Memorial shortly after crossing the Arlington Bridge before the Air Force had time to blow the bridge. The inscriptions were ruined and Lincoln's face painted in blood with the shape of a cross. Police officers fought a running battle in the streets as they retreated eastwards up the Mall. The blood of fallen officers turned the waters of the Lincoln Reflecting Pool red.
The bungled evacuation of President Trump from the White House caused Marine One to crash and kill the President as the Crossed reached the fence surrounding the complex. Captured construction equipment from a nearby building site quickly breached the fence despite intense fire from the Secret Service. Several thousand crossed poured into the grounds , many of whom just an hour before had been police officers and secret service agents. An intense fire fight got underway between the two sides but the sheer numbers of the crossed meant their victory was inevitable.
The White House itself was breached and the agents and Marines inside fought a room by room battle that was ultimately doomed. The handful of senior advisers to the now deceased President were escorted along the extensive tunnel network under the White House that connected the building with the Capitol, Supreme Court and Joint Base Andrews. These tunnels allowed many senior White House officials and Congressmen a chance to escape to Andrews airbase where they were flown by helicopter to the bunker at Mount Weather in Virginia, where newly sworn in President Mike Pence was now taking charge of the crisis.

The Battle of the White House lasted a little over 40 minutes before the last of the defenders were dead or infected and the tunnels beneath were sealed to prevent the Crossed following those fleeing to Andrews.
A total of 83 Representatives and 56 Senators were able to evacuate safely to Mount Weather before the Capitol was overrun. The Capitol Police put up a brave fight on the steps but in the end the sheer numbers of the crossed proved to be overwhelming. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was killed before she could get to safety along with Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell.
The DC National Guard had attempted to mobilise with orders to retake the White House. By the time they could get their gear together it was already a lost cause and the Crossed were throwing themselves at the base. A few units made a fighting retreat the short distance to Joint Base Andrews where surviving military assets in the area were now congregating. For all intents and purposes, Washington DC was lost. Half a million of its residents were infected and another 200,000 dead or dying. Several thousand people were barricaded behind locked doors desperately trying to call 911 only to receive a busy dial tone.
For those left behind, help would not come.
To the north, the people of Baltimore looked on in fear as the enemy came closer.

I do wonder if anything ever happened like this in real life (obviously it won't) but hypothetically would any government resort to nuclear weapons? I could see a very liberal use of chemical weapons as well as carpet bombing infected areas but could anyone stomach issuing a launch orders for a nuke?

Nuclear weapons are a political weapon, which has kept them out of use since their debut in 1945. In a situation like this, a nuke would do the job. Politically, it would be unacceptable though - yeah, I know that sounds nuts - and I doubt it would get used. |

Need to be breaking out nuclear weapons, both strategic and tactical, as well as the full chemical kit; nerve agents especially. Activate selective service and start getting sufficient bodies in uniforms to fight the tide.

Intellectually yes, as the best way of killing most of the infected and giving a chance for outside cordons to hold. However as others have said politically its going to be very difficult for a country to nuke one of its major cities, especially in the case of both countries affected so far where its also the capital. There would still be the hope that people trapped in the region could be rescued, inaccurate as it is and the political damage that would result is likely to deter most politicians from such a decision until its too late.
I don't know about biological weapons as there would be similar political problems there plus even if someone has stocks ready the results would be unclear and there is the chance of that infection spreading to add to the chaos and misery. Napalm and chemical weapons were the infected are numerous is more likely as would be sheer firepower once armed forces get organised, if they can do that in time.
