End of May 2020, epilogue?
Between May 5 and May 25, barely twenty days had passed, but tens of millions of Europeans had been killed, Belgium and Luxembourg almost completely annihilated, an irradiated red zone scarring France, Germany and the Netherlands, a fledgling Euro-Russian war that had already killed almost 100,000 civilians, and last but not least, the almost complete disappearance of American and British protection on the old continent, which fared relatively better than the British Isles (reduced to the barest essentials) and North America (still fighting with the energy of despair and rage in the ruins of St. Louis and Boston).
In just 480 hours, Europe had been brought to its knees, and owed its salvation only to the same atomic weapons that had threatened its very existence in the previous century.
the pathogen responsible for IDV was still a mystery at the time, and would require research and protection measures as costly as the reconstruction and rehousing of millions of refugees during the 2020 crisis.
If Operation Iaso were to succeed and be replicated in other European countries, it would not fail to raise intense ethical and moral questions about the treatment of the infected (described as torture by the media) in order to obtain the preliminary information needed to developp a vaccine, constantly delayed by scientific discoveries. On the other hand, the occupation of parts of the Baltic countries, the brutal campaign against Ukraine and finally the disagreements between the unaffected and affected European countries should only result in the unofficial dissolution of the European Union.
However, this pessimistic observation was to be offset by the good news which would begin to emerge in 2023: the first half of the year was marked by the discovery of a genetic marker specific to the human species, predisposing it to being infected by the "crossed" pathogen, a gigantic genetic sequencing campaign across Europe and then the world made it possible to discover hundreds of thousands of individuals with genetic anomalies prohibiting or hindering the development of the pathogen.
It was not strictly a vaccine but from 2024 a genetic "masker" was available and made it possible, with regular doses, to block the pathogen, or even to reduce its influence in certain infected people.....but the research is still in progress.
The same year, the not-so-accidental death of the Russian "president" led to major policy changes in Eastern Europe: the crash of his plane attributed to his rival Yevgeny Prigozhin could not have changed anything if in At the same time, part of the Russian army had revolted against power, taking Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
The very brief second Russian civil war was to end with the release of political opponents, the withdrawal of Russian forces from the Baltic countries and Ukraine and the establishment of a shaky transitional government.
No one could say what the future of the European continent would consist of, but at least its existence would no longer be threatened as in 2020.
