"What do you mean we don't have any ?" Prime Minister Patel demanded as she stared at the monitor in front of her.
"We disbanded our chemical weapons programme decades ago." Said General Nicholas Carter, Chief of the Defence Staff.
"Christ Carter I know that, I mean you're telling me we didn't keep any stockpiled in an unofficial capacity?"
"Im afraid not ma'am. The Chemical Weapons Convention is rather clear on that matter."
The Acting Prime Minister took a deep breath "Did the Chemical Weapons Convention take into account a virus that makes people mutilate their grandparents before eating them?"
The head of Britain's armed forces said nothing.
"Right. Okay so gassing these animals is out of the question. What options do we have ?" Patel asked.
"We have options. None of them are particularly pretty. All will result in enormous collateral damage. So far we are blockading the main roads and secondary roads in and out of affected areas and giving the troops manning the checkpoints shoot to kill orders on anyone trying to leave who is behaving in an erratic manner. Right now we have several thousand troop's deployed out of Colchester garrison blockading the M25 north of London whilst we have units out of Warminster protecting a line stretching from Bristol down to Portsmouth to keep them out of Devon and Cornwall with an aim of keeping this thing contained to the South East of England. That's our current plan. As for more enhanced options we can bring in a much larger degree of air and fire support in an effort to hammer this outbreak into the ground. This would essentially leave every urban area south of London and east of Devon a ruin. The final option well...." The general trailed off looking down. The Prime Minister knew what that was.
"I'm not nuking my own country general." She said bluntly.
"I'm not saying you should. Just that it's an option if the worst comes to it. Right now we need far more relaxed rules of engagement to contain this , Prime Minister."
"Very well, General. You have full authorisation to utilise any and all military equipment and personnel you need with the exception of the nuclear arsenal, for now."
"Very well, Prime Minister." The General nodded and cut the video link.
.......
"How long should we stay here?" Nicole asked Ben. They were sat on a church pew along with dozens of other refugees who had fled north in the last few hours.
"Not long. Those people - if we can even call them people - will head north too. Once they run out of victims they'll travel in search of more. We should leave soon." Ben said stifling a yawn. He was so tired and the coffee the vicar had given him hadn't helped much .
"Go where ? London's gone. My parents are there. I don't know if they're alive or not." Her lip quivered as she held back tears .
"We're not too far from Oxford. We'll make our way there. A big town like that will have a crisis centre in operation and I'd imagine the army will be there too."
"We don't have transport. The ambulance is out of diesel and I doubt you'll get a taxi." Sarah glumly said as she rubbed her eyes.
"That police van outside. The one those poor coppers came here in?" She suggested.
"Maybe. Don't know if it has fuel but I can ask them for the keys." Ben said as he went over to the mentally broken policemen.
"Hey buddy. Which one of you has the keys for your van?" Ben asked an officer with sergeants stripes .
"I do." He replied. He handed over the keys without thought or hesitation.
"Get out of here, kid." The cop said. His eyes stared though him. "Go. Whilst you still can."
"Come with us."
"No. No we'll stay here. We don't deserve to get away. Not after leaving those kids. Those poor kids. All that screaming." The officer stared into space and said nothing more. Ben patted him on the shoulder and returned to Nicole.
"Got the keys , love. Let's get a move on."
Suddenly , the church bell started ringing.
A man burst into the front door. Ben recognised him as one of the guards from the small militia that had formed to guard the roads into the village.
"They're coming!" He screamed.
In the distance down the road, a faint sound of laughing and whooping grew ever closer.
"Hahahaha"
