I did say I didn't think but obviously the memory isn't what it was. [What was my name again??] Well remembered youngster.

Centurion - Tiger Tank's Nemesis - Mark Felton. Productions - 122
A little misleading as the two never clashed but a good intro into the origins of a great tank.
One of the big problems for British tanks in WWII was that Lord Nuffield, who had great influence in the tank development pushed for the use of an updated design of the WWI American Liberty Tank, engine which was too weak for most uses, meaning the resultant tanks were underpowered. The Centurion was I believe the 1st British design that had a more modern and capable engine, hence the markedly greater maneuverability despite its substantial [for the time] weight.

Always wonder, i assume the Centurion Mk 1 armed with a,17pdr would be able to go head to head with a Tiger, but i doubt a Centurion Mk 1 would be able to go head to head with a King Tiger.

It might depend on the circumstances. However a centurion would have a better chance than just about any other tank in the western inventories. Its got the same gun as used in the Firefly, which was capable of knocking out a Tiger but is lower, better armoured and more mobile I think. Of course the best bet for either side is to both get in the 1st shot but be able to hit the side or rear of the target rather than the heavily armoured front arc.

The British are thus the only country who where not able to kill a Tiger with their most modern tank they had during World War II, the United States had M26 Pershing who manged to hit both a Panther, and several Tiger Is, the Soviets had of course their line of heavy tanks but the British sadly never got a change to have a Centurion Mk 1 go head to head with a Tiger I, but as you mentioned that it uses same gun as used in the Firefly then the Centurion would be able to handle itself very well.

Very interesting thanks. When I saw female pilots at Stalingrad I was assuming Russians initially but a hell of an effort by those women. Also highlight some of the importance of Romania's role in WWII.
