Interesting and suggests that if it had come to a nuclear exchange in the early 60's the Vulcan's may have done better than many expected against Soviet air defences. Not clear whether all 8 were carrying bombs or if only 2 were and the others were acting as ECM a/c to confuse the defenders and didn't carry bombs themselves? Suspect the former but could be
Think the 3 escorting Vulcan's where there to jam enough to allow the 4th one to get to its target. Also if you want to read more about Operation Sky Shield, here is the link to the Wikipedia page about Operation Sky ShieldAnd here is a YouTube clip about it called All Airplanes Grounded (1961) Operation Skyshield.
Interesting. It reports that less than a third of 'enemy' a/c were successfully tracked even when they kept to expected heights rather than flying low as many would be expected to. Also that a simple ECM such as chaff was very effective in obscuring attackers as well as more complex systems. Sounds like it was a very sobering experience for the US air defence.

Sounds like it was a very sobering experience for the US air defence. So much they covered up the Vulcans ever having taken part in it.

Futile but brave. The Italians would have needed a lot more tanks to make a difference, if only for a while and their likely to attract even more firepower including by air if necessary. However great respect for the men who took part.

Doubt if the Italians had a tank like the P.40 they would still have won against the Allies.

Very interesting as I'd never heard of forces holding out after the formal surrender although under the circumstances I can see why some might. Also that von Paulus claimed he was captured rather than surrendered is something new.
I think the big mistake for Hitler was going for the Caucasus as that split the already limited German forces. The key thing was not to capture Baku and the oil-fields, which their highly unlikely to get much if any oil out even if they did take it, but to deny its oil to the Soviets. By taking control of the lower Volga preferably the Stalingrad-Astrakhan region and they not only cut off oil but also a lot of other Soviet logistics. Probably wouldn't decisively affect the war in the east but would have made things more difficult for the Soviets.

Interesting thanks. Think I had heard of this before but didn't realise it happened so late in the war, only starting a week or two before the final surrender. A lot of hard work obviously went into it and possibly also gave some useful experience for the later Berlin Air Lift.

Its a period in the Netherlands known as the Hongerwinter (literal translation: hunger winter), you can read more here: Dutch famine of 1944–45A YouTube clip that also was used in this episode by Mark Felton can be seen below in its entirety.

Interesting and don't think I'd heard of the Meagroc before. Could have been an interesting development if Britain had had the funds post-war.
Rather lacking in imagination for the poor' monkey's names by the US.
