Since we have a film thread, I figured I'd make one for television shows.
Recently, I've seen a few great ones.
True Detective: The first season was a fantastic representation of nihlism, mixed with a nice dose of existential dread and southern gothic aesthetics. It's an inspiration for something I'm writing currently. Season 2 isn't great, but I will be watching Season 3 today.
Bodyguard: Great show. Flawed, and the ending was personally a bit of a let down for me personally, but I won't spoil. The action sequences were done superbly and the BBC actually putting effort into getting the uniforms/equipment etc of the police firearms officers correct was a refreshing change.
Line of Duty: Generally very good. Kept up the tension throughout, although it can get frustrating at times. I thought the first season was done quite realistically in terms of police snd criminal operations and didn't go overboard with the actions of either side. The same can't be said for later seasons, but the whole show is worth a watch.
Chernobyl: Nothing to say as yet. I'm starting the show today now that the first episode is out. It looks fantastic though.

Good idea with the thread.
On-air TV shows I currently watch on a regular basis: The Good Fight. Very current affairs, very political. It can get annoying at times but still remains great. Berlin Station. I'm on Season 2. It is a good spy thriller. Deutschland 86. This remains brilliant. 83 was very well done and while 86 started odd, its rather good.
Boxsets I recently watched in binge fashion: The Deuce. This was great! I saw Season 1 and when the price of 2 drops, I'll be watching that. This Life. So mid-90s. The music, the atmosphere is spot on.

forcon you mentioned Bodyguard. I liked it apart from the twist of those criminals and terrorists working together. Did that strike you as believable? I thought too that the home secretary was going to show up alive at the end.

I thought too that the home secretary was going to show up alive at the end. The ending was kind of a dissapointment to me. It just seemed like a let down to set things up to look like there was a big conspiracy within the intelligence services to kill the home secretary and then have it turn out to be organised crime and one bent copper behind the whole thing. I suppose that's more likely in the real world than MI5 killing a cabinet minister, but I think the writers would have made the whole thing a lot more of a big deal if either MI5 or a foreign power was behind everything rather than the criminal-terrorist alliance. I never did think that Montague was going to show up still alive though. To be fair, I never expected the woman who was caught in the end to be involved; I suspected just about everyone but her.

There is a BBC political conspiracy thriller from 2000 ish called State of Play. Six episodes. Check it out, really do. It meets that criteria you mentioned. Characters are cracking and story is amazing.

Am I the only person in the world not into Game of Thrones? It feels like it. (Seemingly) everyone at work today, friends of mine and news presenters bang on about it. I just turn up my nose in a sneer and look down upon these little people. Am I in the wrong in thinking that, without ever watching a minute of it, the whole thing is just trash TV made for the masses and thus dumbed down to the lowest common denominator? Or am I just a foolish snob?

If I find the time, I might try to read the first ASOIAF novel. Apparently that is better than the TV show according to some.

Do not know many tv shows that went faster than the book that they are based on, but then again, I will think I will be in my 40s when George R.R. Martin finally finish his next books.

Agreed. Not watched any of the series as I don't use satillite TV and read the 1st book shortly after it came out but was too dark for my tastes. Remember reading a parody of it elsewhere which summed it up as you meet new characters, start to like them then they are killed.
While doing some Youtube viewing I saw an analysis of a recent battle at the Stark home castle - Winterdeep is it - which makes Peter Jackson looks like a military genius in comparison. The defenders did just about everything they could to lose the battle and were only saved by a single chance killing of the Winter King I think he was called at which his undead army fell apart. Basically while the guy who produced the video says Martin gets a lot of medieval details right the command of the battle was a total disaster.
