Yeah, Windu could’ve plunged his saber right into Palpatine and been done with it (though that leaves a shaken Anakin who might lose it in a fit of rage). That said, I think the actual fight between Windu and Palpatine was up in the air. Palpatine did point his saber at Windu’s chest at one point, and probably could’ve ended it then and there. But he didn’t, allowing Windu to rebound and turn the tables as he did. |

One the one hand, I don’t think that Palpatine would’ve wanted to risk his life that much. With Windu’s saber at his chin, he has little else but Force Lightning to defend himself with (and look how that turned out). But on the other hand, when Palpatine realized that Windu was winning during the second of their fight, I speculate that in a last-ditch effort as he sensed Anakin approaching, Palpatine played the corner, terrified victim while making Windu out to be the big, bad, treasonous villain (which couldn’t have been further from the truth, as you and I both know). However, that theory probably has its share of holes in it. Since I only thought about it just now, I haven’t had much time to refine my logic. |

I must admit I found that fairly funny. The big weapon being a monstrous mechanical hammer! Also thought when Windu lost his sabre and the dust cloud cleared for him to see he's totally surrounded by robots he was going to do the old trick of "3. 2. 1. leap" just at the right time and have them blast each other to bits rather than doing it the hard way with massive use of force.
