This was done in a famous Star Trek fanfiction, but how would say, Peter Capaldi do if he woke up as the Twelfth Doctor?

Well, I don't know about Peter Capaldi but if William Shatner woke up in Kirk's body, he'd be a zombie, seeing how Kirk died in Star Trek Generations.

Do the actors gain any 'abilities' when they transform? Plus I presume that they do gain the necessary background knowledge. It would be awkward not recognising members of your family or close personal associates because their either been dropped from the film or look nothing like the actual character.
With regards to Peter Capaldi I did read that one reason he gave up the role was that he found it physically too demanding. So unless he gets time-lord resources, such as the 2nd heart and the fact he's functionally immortal, that would be a problem. Not to mention if he actually found himself facing daleks, cybermen and the like can he rely on them being as stupid and accommodating as they generally are on TV? Similarly would he know how to use the sonic screwdriver or how to speak multiple languages and know history across a broad range of ages and multiple galaxies.
Those points would be ever more true for actors playing characters with superhero type powers. A superman who can't fly and can be killed by a bullet or a car crash say? Or even a martial artist who falls over his own feet when he tries to fight. [Reminded of a Rowan Atkinson advert for a chocolate bar if any of them have ever seen it. Checking its an ad for Snickers].

Forgot to mention. There was that excellent TL on another site, one of the ones that have been lost, where Sean Bean woke up in the Game of Thrones universe as a resurected Ned Stark after the characters murder. Very good fun and much missed.

Even better: actors who played villains waking up in their shows or movies. How does James Earl Jones adjust to being a crippled asthmatic cyborg etc.

Sarah Sutton waking up in Doctor Who as teenage Nyssa... Especially as Nyssa was implied to have bigger boobs than Sarah also being thrust from a nearly sixty year old body to an eighteen year old one (assuming Sarah wakes up inside the story "The Keeper of Traken") will throw her for a loop.

That would be very strange, for older people to suddenly find themselves in bodies of roles they played decades ago. In theory, for Doctor Who alone you could have several surviving Doctors and quite a number of companions suddenly playing characters they hadn't been involved with for decades. Also would Arnie be a Terminator and if so the friendly one of the later films or the ruthless killer of the original. Or have split personalities as he [and others have played multiple roles] in different films. Similarly would Jessica Alba be Max from Dark Angel or Susan Storm from the Fantastic Four, or have both sets of personalities and powers. Ditto with Chris Evans being Captain America and the Human Torch!

What i mean is... the actors wake up inside a work as their character, not that they transform into their character in the real world. Wonder how Sean Connery would fare in the James Bond world or Ray Liotta faring in the world of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City?

Would Sarah Sutton fare well in Nyssa's body? she might get Nyssa killed if she refuses to let the Master put the muscle constricter bracelet on her arm. The Whoniverse doesn't have any director saying "cut" and the Master won't be as stupid and as accommodating as he is on BBC TV.
