What would the 1980s, 1990s, and beyond look like if there was no (official/legal) right of secession for the SSRs in the USSR?
Any thoughts on this?

Yes something like the Russian Commonwealth ore the United States of Russia. Or the Union of Sovereign States. But is a decision for a SSR to seceded not a right given to them.
