What if Al Gore would have extremely narrowly won the U.S. Presidency in 2000 and then would have gotten killed on 9/11 while he was visiting the Pentagon?
How exactly would Joe Lieberman's Presidency (Joe Lieberman was Al Gore's VP, and thus he would become U.S. President after Al Gore's death) have turned out in this scenario?
Any thoughts on this?

For the record, Joe Lieberman appears to have been one of the biggest hawks within the U.S. Democratic Party. Indeed, he even lost the 2006 Connecticut Democratic U.S. Senate primary due to his continued support for the Iraq War!

"The change that Al Gore would be killed is extremely small." Gore picked a good insurance policy!

As soon as news got in that the Twin Towers where hit, the president would have been whisk away by the secret service.

Thus, what about having President Al Gore visit the Twin Towers on 9/11?

My guess is that relatively little changes initially. The Iraq War still happens, and is still handled in much the same way as in reality. This means Lieberman is still modestly popular in 2004, and narrowly wins re-election - but then, the Great Recession still hits (it caught everyone by surprise, so I don't think his administration would have done much to prevent it). Furthermore, he repeals Don't Ask, Don't Tell during his second term, which angers many conservative Southern Democrats.
Something tells me that whichever Democrat gets nominated in 2008 is going to get completely crushed. They'll have the stench of the Great Recession on them - and they'll almost certainly be further left than Lieberman, so they'll be placed in the awkward position of arguing that his domestic policies didn't go far enough. He'll also have the Iraq War dragging him down, but I'm not sure if there's going to be an anti-war Republican waiting in the wings to take advantage. (Ron Paul, perhaps?)
