What if the U.S.S. Maine is still stationed in the U.S. when it blows up (with butterflies, this is very likely doable) and thus the U.S. doesn't go to war with Spain in 1898?
Any thoughts on this?

Yes, but McKinley's response to this might be that what Spain does in its own colonies is none of the U.S.'s business.

Well everything that happens next door is US business, they do not like it when countries slaughter people in places they own.

The U.S. has no problem supporting brutal military dictatorships in Latin America during the Cold War in real life, though.

But they have also supported assorted nasty regimes long before the cold war. Don't forget the origins of the phase banana republic.

But in the end i see no change for Spain to keep Cuba and the Philippines if they continuity to fight their Independence war, it will drain Spain of man and money to keep them in its grasp.
