I've been following some of the stuff that's happening around the belief that around 2045 humanity should arrive at the Singularity, a moment where technology reaches an inflection point. I'm thinking the year they picked is pretty arbitrary, but develvopments in AI, robotics, mind-machine interfacing and other exciting stuff should be occurring in the coming decades anyway. Interesting idea and some of the aims should be possible within the timescale they set out. At least for a small elite.
My fear is that if you did get effective immortality then its likely to mean a very stagnate society and not solve many of the problems we actually face. Most likely is that an established elite of wealthy and powerful seek to maximise their power and influence which would mean less 'room' for new leaders and new ideas. Less likely if immortality did become commonplace, is how would the additional drain on resources be sustained?
