What if the U.S. would have helped the Iraqi Kurdish and Shiite rebels overthrow Saddam Hussein back in 1991?
Any thoughts on this?

Likely an insurgency that would take up most of the nineties. Depending on the support of Jordan and Saudi Arabia, it might shorten, as will support from Europe. Russia would be an interesting wild card - maybe they'll back Kurdish independence to be a bulwark against US influence.

Also, for the record, I seriously doubt that the U.S. and the West will recognize Kurdish independence in the 1990s in this scenario. Indeed, maybe this will occur later, but it almost certainly wouldn't occur in the 1990s.

Perhaps not as the greatest threat, but my impression was that they still generally see Israel as illegitimate. |
