What if Viktor Yanukovych would have won the Ukrainian Presidency in 2004 (fairly, rather than through fraud)?
Any thoughts on this?

Maybe he is removed from power early and everything what happen in Ukraine starts several years earlier. There is a big difference between 2010 and 2004, though. In 2004 (and unlike in 2010), the European Union (E.U.) wasn't willing to negotiate an Association Agreement with Ukraine yet. Indeed, it was Yushchenko's victory in Ukraine in 2004 that made the E.U. more hopeful about Ukraine's future and thus increased the E.U.'s willingness to cooperate with Ukraine. In turn, the lack of an E.U. integration offer in this scenario means that if Yanukovych decides to join a Russia-led integration project in this scenario, he probably wouldn't face as much opposition to this as he faced in real life.

Russia could create a own union with Ukraine and Belarus that together with the Commonwealth of Independent States could become own version of the European Union.
