I think a possible POD could be that the First Italo-Ethiopian War of 1894 to 1896 where Ethiopia won is more harsh for Italy then it was in OTL, Ethiopia begin to look at Japan style of modernization with Emperor Menelik II decreeing that he want to make the Empire of Ethiopia the most powerful country in Africa. That makes sense. They could be vying for Sudan, Somalia, Uganda, and Kenya. Maybe the would be already in control of Italian somaliland, they could build Mogadishu into a major naval base for them.

I can certainly see that. The British will be far spread, having to deal with fronts in Europe and Asia.
