"Dominion" by Christopher J. Sansom

So, I finished it meanwhile. As a crime/thriller novel, it's far from Fatherland (which he calls the best AH story out there - good taste), but the background is not bad.

- Halifax makes peace with the Nazis in 1940. Belgian Congo goes to Germany, but the British and even French colonial empire stays intact.
- Switzerland was divided between Nazi Germany, Italy, and Vichy France in 1940.
- FDR loses re-election against Robert A. Taft. The Republicans keep the White House for twelve years.
- Nazis maintain the occupation is the Isle of Wight, to keep Britain under control.
- Germany has more troops available for Barbarossa, Britain sends some troops too.
- Moscow conquered in October, Stalin hanged on the Red Square. The Soviets are pushed behind the Urals. In the present, Khrushchev and Zhukov are the strongmen. Below the surface, criminals have gained a lot of power.
- Britain undergoes a party-political revolution: Tories, Labour, Liberals, Scottish Nationalists split and recombine along the line appeasers-resistance. The former have the power - under Halifax until 1942, then under Lloyd George, since 1945 under Beaverbrook. Churchill organizes the latter in the United Democrats.
- The elections of 1950 are rigged, giving Mosley's BUF more MPs than the United Democrats. Churchill recognizes the sham and recommends his people to go underground, form a resistance.
- In the present of 1952 (Sansom's birth year), Mosley is minister of the interior, Rab Butler Exterior, Enoch Powell India. Because Britain kept the Empire, turned it into a free trade zone, and wants to solidify its rule there by sending settlers to Africa. Which means in practice that they takes unemployed people from e.g. Sheffield, train them for three months, and then expect that they'll be able to manage farms of 1000 acres in black Africa. Gandhi died in 1947 in prison.
- Many Brits become collaborators, even Churchill's son Randolph.


- Heydrich's still alive, which confirms my theory that either a nazi victory has to lead to his survival or vice versa.
- Göring died in 1951 - as in "Fatherland"
- The "führer" is still alive, but his Parkinson's getting worse, to the point that he suffers from hallucinations about orthodox Jews threatening him.
- There are tensions between Wehrmacht and SS. Most of the Nazi party sides with the latter.
- Mussolini still reigns Italy.
- Crimea was "Germanized", as the only part of the occupied Soviet Union. It's isolated, that helped.
- The Wehrmacht has impressive weapons like Tiger IV with six-meter cannons (translation error??) and V-3 rockets, but those aren't useful against partisans with AK-47s. Every winter, they push the Germans back. Supposedly, five million Germans have died in the East so far.

In 1952, Adlai Stevenson is elected POTUS. Given that he's idealistic, people wonder whether he'll want to interfere in Europe, like FDR did.
