Let's say there is a series of very capable Popes interested in territorial expansion and by 1300 AD Italy is a unified state with the Pope as it's head.
What are the consequences for Europe and Italy?
Just my initial thoughts. 1. As long as there isn't any wave of obscurantism among the Papacy, the Renaissance is even stronger than OTL due to lack of internal conflicts as well as having a unified legal system. 2. Unification of France might be delayed due and we might see Papal expansion into southern France. 3. The Balkans might see a delayed Muslim expansion 4. The literary language of Italy would be most likely based on the dialect of Rome instead of that of Florence. 5. The power of the Paoacy would increase significantly. The Reformation if it takes place, might be defeated completely or be much less successful.

This seems awfully quick. Until the Borgias, the Pope didn't yet have absolute power as a worldly ruler of the Papal States, but had to share it with his vassals.
