How to achieve a Russia that is majority Islamic?
I can see a plausible PoD in the 14th century . Let's say that the Mongol rule of Russia is more direct and the Mongols/Tatars settle in Russia in greater numbers. This would prompt the Russian nobility to convert to Islam and the religion would trickle down to lower social classes from there.
What do you guys think?

This probably has been mentioned in other AH places before, but unless they can find a workaround* it's hard to see how the Russians have to give up pork and alcohol. {Spoiler*}interpreting the Quran that Mohammed only forbade wine but not beer, kvass, vodka etc. |

On pork I have seen the suggestion that this is what formed the basis of Islamic expansion in northern regions, as where pork was established as a major part of the diet the religion failed to spread. On the other hand I've wondered if this was mixing cause and effect because I think pigs were farmed in many places where Islam was later established. After all pigs must have been known in Palestine for them to be banned by Judaism in earlier times.
On the other issue I think its less getting more Mongols there as they were relatively small in absolute numbers but of getting locals to convert, which would be an issue with diet as you say. Possibly for some reason Islam arrives in the region some centuries earlier. Say the Khazar's instead of selecting Judaism had gone Islamic instead?

Carp is a good substitute for pork... It's a species of fish that eats everything.
I wonder if it was known back then.
The conversion of Rus to Islam can be done via simple elite replacement - it's enough that the top layer of the nobility is Muslim and the rest of society will convert too given enough time.
