Originally, "Family Ties" ended in 1989 after 7 seasons. But what if it came back for an 8th season?
The 8th season of "Family Ties" premieres September 17th, 1989, on NBC at 8:00/7:00 Central. The season is 24 episodes long, but Michael J. Fox is absent in 5 or 6 of them due to filming the Back To The Future sequels during this time. In a couple episodes, he's only in 1 or 2 scenes and has somewhere between 3 and 5 lines of dialogue.
The 8th season is the last one. So the series finale airs on May 13th, 1990, on NBC. The plot is basically the same; Alex moves away from home and gets a job as a stockbroker on Wall Street.
So if "Family Ties" did indeed have an 8th season, I imagine this being a possible scenario: Doing the show and BTTF 2 and 3 being quite hard on Michael J. Fox because he's busy doing the Back To The Future sequels during this time. So between that and doing "Family Ties"' 8th season, he doesn't have much free time. By the time "Family Ties" finally wraps up, Mike is all burnt out. He takes a break for a while to rest. He's still in "Doc Hollywood". That doesn't change.
