You have four other generals I consider good: Montgomery, Slim, the Duke of Marlborough and Cromwell, but that is about it. NONE of them was that much better than Wellington, except Slim.
I have referred to California as a causus belle for the Mexican War. You will notice the Fremont expedition? It was on its way BEFORE the Texas border incident. Polk was after it, came Hades or Hiram. Before we derail this thread, perhaps we should open a Mexican American War thread. I really have no interest in it yet, since I have three major threads going on more interesting subjects, but have at it, if you want.
I know hostility was planned before the formal war started. However the same factor applies. Without Louisiana you are going to have great difficulty reaching California. Especially if the Columbia/Oregon territory is resolved differently.
I know you think US military conquest is inevitable and correct but the evidence suggests otherwise.
What is it that makes it impossible? The Royal Navy certainly could not stop it. |

It could if the British government decided to oppose such an invasion. Along with the rest of the British military and economic resources.

It could if the British government decided to oppose such an invasion. Along with the rest of the British military and economic resources.
You didn't have the bases or the logistics in that ocean. Look up, "54/40 or fight." |

You didn't have the bases or the logistics in that ocean. Look up, "54/40 or fight."
That seems to be a primer for [secondary school?] children on the history of the issue of the boundary in the region rather than anything detailed. It says nothing at all about the abilities of either side in the region in the event of a clash between the two.
Its noticeable that when the 'Pig War' briefly caused tension in 1859 the British had superior naval and land forces in the region and given that was with a US that already had California and the Oregon/Washington area a conflict when the latter is disputed and the former under Mexican control - no matter somewhat limited its unlikely the US position would be any stronger and its likely to be weaker.

It is a primer. You have to start somewhere. As for the abilities of the respective parties, the Americans had a demonstrated presence in the Eastern Pacific. How did that first work out for the British? NOT TOO GOOD.
But as I wrote previously, the subject is Napoleon, and if you want to discuss the matter further, we should open a thread upon that Pig War subject. The correlation of forces, in 1848 was not in Britain's favor and after 1848, in region, never would be. |
