What trajectory of political, social and technological development do you envision for Japan in this scenario?
Japan has more than 400,000 US troops and they are de facto rulers of the country. Do they hand the power over to a civilian government or continue to run the country by themselves?
Where do they get the natural resources from given how resource poor Japan is?

What trajectory of political, social and technological development do you envision for Japan in this scenario? Japan has more than 400,000 US troops and they are de facto rulers of the country. Do they hand the power over to a civilian government or continue to run the country by themselves? Where do they get the natural resources from given how resource poor Japan is? We need more parameters. Does the American garrison have enough ammunition and technical expertise to put Japanese manufactories into operation at gunpoint? Because Japanese revaunchists would recognize opportunity an opportunity to reverse the MacArthur Shogunate back to the Tojo days as soon as they cognate the new situation. And is there any American or Japanese navy left? Because you need oil and the nearest oil is in Indonesia and you will be fighting the Dutch, Spaniards, British, the Portuguese, the Chinese, the Koreans and maybe anybody else out there floating in the Pacific for that Indonesian oil, and while you are south of the equator doing the combination of "I shall return!, Hail Columbia! And Banzai!" you will be stealing all the tin, silver, mercury, iron, copper, and did I tell you that the Philippine Islands were still full of mineral treasures that the Spanish have not looted yet? |

But only the uptime people, American or Japanese, with modern vehicles and trying to operate them, would be fighting for 'rock oil', ie petroleum, specifically, because they have significant demand and application for it. Other, downtime, peoples may fight the uptimers, but hardly ever for the black sludge specifically, which is an ointment at best to most of them. But they might try to fight the uptimers for the land the oil is under, if they happen to live there or farm there. |

I keep forgetting to explain why This:  would be fighting this:  The one bunch is fighting for spices, slaves, gold, and anything moveable and of immediate value to ship back to Europe. The guys in the steel ships just want to keep the lights on and the wheels turning and prevent 5 million people from starving to death. Oh and fertilizer, they will be fighting for bird guano and phosphates. Japanese soil is exhausted. If you want a good rice harvest, you need to enrich that soil. |
