Was the banning justified?
The point of the Smokey the Bear IP was to educate and propagandize Americans into not setting forest fires and to break Americans of their careless arsonist habits. Jay Ward was a person who thought this was ridiculous social messaging and engineering and sought to use his cartoon as a satirical vehicle to poke fun at the US government's efforts to control social messaging.
The USG kind of taught Mister Ward that a big 700 pound government agency was stronger than a liberal TV network.
So... Stokey the Bear was banned.

There are real issues to be discussed with this type of treatment. The censorship had to be done to adjust social consciousness as to what is socially acceptable.
The intent then was remove stereotypes and racist references. We will presently have to revisit this issue as we mature as a nation and can look upon these works of art in context and with objectivity.
