Lots of sulphur for gunpowder making. Sulfur is black powder.Ruby and Peyton are specialized for Krags and suitable for Mausers as double base powders.

Copenhagen University, Geological Faculty 12 May 1940/ 5 March 1864
Minister of Procurement Johannes Kjærbøl and Minister of Science: Ludvig Christensen both Socialdemocratic Party hold a joint meeting with the Faculty leadership. Both ministers want to reopen Geological surveys of Greenland initially for an assessment of available coal – the prime issue, iron, copper, silver and gold resources and possible development of Hydropower – all to be undertaken in both East and West Greenland. The Navy have resceduled its photographic survey of Greenland to commence during July 1940 (May 1864) to finish the 1932 and 1938 surveys. The Ministers also include a survey of Iceland primarily for establishment of Hydropower in that country but also to get a better picture of the minerals to be mined. An important issue is economy – due to the situation of the Nation rentability isn't a determining factor as any ore's or Hydropower sites found will be considered. Government will be very open to negotiating local obstacles be it location of areas utilized or sites from which shipping be done. Any combination of ore and Hydropower will be considered as such may ease the requirements for mining.
Thats the North Atlantic but the West Indies and the Nicobar Is. also need Geological Surveying.
The Faculty looked at the Ministers in desbelief – Carte Blanche? Indeed. Timeframe? As soon as possible only to be suspended due to weather and resumed as soon as possible. At least a five year programme is expected. All previous sites are to be reassessed – some will not yet locally be in operation. Engineers will be party to the survey to assess means and methods to move ore from site to embarkment site and possible Hydropower sites. Funding? Ministry of Procurement. Get going!

You are going to run into geological problems. Also, you will find that in addition to ground flotation you will have weather effects. Send along meteorologists!

Denmark claimed the Nicobar Is 1756 and that claim was recognized by other powers. They probably yielded rich spices but otherwise was a deadly tropical paradise. Colonization was tried but failed. 1869 the Islands was transferred to Britain. Strategic location - yes mainly in relation to Thailand which have had relations with Denmark since 1857 and Sumatra (oil).

Surely know about the geological problems and transportation from sites to shore.. Yes meteorologists will have to go too. Weather often delayed shipping out ore or caused shipwrecks.

According to wiki at this point while still under Danish legal ownership there's no actual Danish bases there.
Does 1940 Denmark have decent knowledge of penicillin, although by this time at least their aware of how malaria is spread. I'm wondering if its actually worthwhile keeping them and might be better selling them to Italy if that offer still comes or Britain for India as OTL?

No - no bases. Its only being pondered.
Due to malaria outbreaks in Denmark during early modern period when Quinine became available during late 1670's it was experimented with in Denmark and found to be a valuable potion against Malaria - so its well known. And the thing preventing its use on site was the not uncommon throwing up due to the bitter taste and resultant vomiting and cost - it was expensive back in the day.
Regarding penincillin - Løvens Kemiske Fabrik (Lion Chemical Factory) in cooperation with Dr. K.A. Jensen began production of penincillin in Denmark 1943. We had the doctors for it.
Selling off to Italy surprised me but I've looked into it; it was conditions in Italy that prevented the possibility it seems. If the Minghetti Government survives and from my scant readings this seem difficult..

Charlotte Amalie Danish West Indies 2 March 1864 West Indies Squadron the Steam Frigate Sjælland (Commander J.L. Gottleib Squadron Commander/acting Rear-Admiral Commander West Indies), Steam Corvette Thor (Hedemann) and Armoured Scooner Esbern Snare (Kraft) made for much of a sight entering the port joining the Steam Scooner Fylla (E. Krieger). Prior to leaving Copenhagen Roads the three ships crews had gotten Shore Exercises; new firearms Krag-Jørgensen Rifles and Madsen Machineguns became their weaponry. Stations added to different points on railings to make for positioning Machineguns.
As the three ships had moored or anchored the Officers went ashore where they were greeted by Governor-General Vilhelm Ludvic Birch. A trained Jurist the first question of Birch's was about the validity of the Squadron's orders. Anticipating just such PM Stauning had ordered besides the already delivered delegation to the Danish USA Minister at Washington another smaller to attend to Birch with sufficient legal documentation. Even so Birch looked somewhat confused but the interruption by Rear-Admiral Gottlieb and his recounting his own story of transformation from 1864 to 1940 made much impression upon Birch and the Officers and official delegation asked to escort the Governor-General to his residence for refreshments and further talks.
At the Governor's Residence the official delegation unveiled the formal instructions to the Governor-General from PM Stauning; the Colony was to be transformed to an Amt the Governor-General would assume the position of Amtmand (Amt-man head of local rule). Danish Healthcare and teaching to be instituted. A census of all peoples subjects of his Majesty King Christian X as well as foreigners to be undertaken as soon as possible. Everybody so encountered should be asked as to place of birth and be inquired as to citizenship – if not Danish then be instructed as falling under Danish Aliens Code and required to obtain a residence permit. Further instructions regarding Aliens would be forthcoming as soon as possible. The official delegation carrying necessary legal law codes for the Governor-General to peruse. A larger Army Unit would follow when possible to secure transformation of society to 1940 standards which would entail Danish Social Services, Military Service of all male citizens at or above 18 if not have done such service already and registration as voters according to Danish law. Futher instructions would be passed on by the Wireless Telegraph aboard the Frigate Sjælland.

So how large would it be, a battalion size. Does 1940 Denmark have a marine type of unit.

Bicycle Battalion in mind. It did sterling service in Slesvig and is very mobile which is needed with the lack of petrol for motor transport.
Denmark still have its Marines - its part of the Bornholm Defences where it have served since 1645.

A found it, the Marine Regiment (Denmark) i think you are speaking of. Ah yes. Well according to a Danish source the Regiment during 1645 consisted of 6 companies. The Army handbook only list Bornholm as a garrison area.
Today one Squadron of the old Regiment is party to the III Recce. Battalion/Guards Hussar Regiment at Bornholm - the Marine Squadron.
Squadron Badge:
and being Marines have to do stuff in water:
and being a Marine:
Navy Anchor.

Stockholm 3 March 1864
Danish delegation conclude a trade treaty with Sweden-Norway: Agricultural produce, Health and Veterinarian knowledge and know-how of Hydropower Plants in return of Metals and heavy Artillery. Swedens and Norwegians are allowed to take up work with Danish businesses in Danish lands. Information of Svalbard being a Norwegian territory shared with Russia/Sovietunion in 1940 lead to a decision to claim all the territory for Norway and open coalmines in the islands. Preparations are made to send off an expedition from Trondheim, Norway to found a settlement or at least a scientific station and to start prospecting for the coalmines.
